He probably does, smugly thinking that Archie has learned nothing from their previous suit with him.
He probably indeed does, even though the only reason he won the previous lawsuit is that thanks to flabbergasting incompetence, Archie had somehow lost the contract that would have proved their case. That only applies to what Penders contributed to the comic, though. He didn't magically acquire the rights to stuff other people had written.

Its was pretty dumb on archie part. That they let this man get away with nearly 230 charcters lol.

I’m not sure what to think about this? 🤔

Sorry for the doublepost, but this is what I mean by Sonic being his only lifeline. This is a trailer for a TV show, that NEVER got picked up and it's based of Ken's own comic, which got canned after 1 issue.

Wasn't it revealed some time ago (either here or Sonic Retro) that Ken only won a cash settlement (I think for whatever reprints he was owed) and doesn't actually have legitimate ownership of what he was trying to take? Or am I misremembering the whole thing? Because I remember an editor (Scott Fulop) tried the same suit sometime later (at Ken's advice) and it came out at some point that Fulop or someone in charge was fucking with the work-for-hire paperwork.

I don't remember it actually being proven that Ken's own paperwork was lost, just that Archie and Sega were a bit at odds over how to deal with the case and that claim.

I agree with this dyke to some extent, one of the few things funnier than Ken himself, is probably his haters. the most entertaining thing about Ken, is no matter what he says or does, some autistic freak with a furry profile picture will start cursing him out and telling him he's evil and shit. it's hilarious. and Penders just keeps on truckin', with his shitty comic, brain-dead liberal political posts, and occasional legal ramblings. The other funniest thing about Ken, is despite being known as a writer for a furry comic for children, and his only fans typically being furries, he seems to despise that type of thing. he's going to be at comic conventions, going unnoticed by most of the crowd, and shit on by the people who know who he is there, and he'll still just be sitting there selling copies of his archie reprints with disgusting new material, entirely convinced this comic is the shit.

he does actually own all of that material (that he wrote) and he can legally reprint all of it. however it has to be legally distinct from other Sonic material. for example, I own reprints of Elliot Maggin's two Superman novels from the 70s. which coincidentally Ken did the covers for (the original versions just had photos of Chris Reeve from the movie). basically he was able to reprint them because he owned the stories, but the covers don't say Superman on them or anything like that. and Penders covers you can tell it's supposed to be Superman but they don't have the typical S logo or whatever. I'm assuming him having worked on those he probably is going to follow something similar for his reprinted Archie material. that's also why the Lara-Su Chronicles Beginnings, was titled that and had an all new cover despite basically just being Mobius 25 Years Later.

I'd imagine when it comes down to it the only thing he could really get into any legal trouble with is if he didn't have new covers made and they prominently display SONIC all over the cover both the title and the character. he could probably get away with some shit like calling it mobius archive or whatever and just having an illustration of some red shoes on the cover. that way anyone looking at it, knows what it is. but is still legally technically distinct enough to not infringe on the Sonic brand. for the Knuckles omnibus he'd have to do the same thing. because even if he does own all the stories inside and the characters he made, he doesn't literally own knuckles or sonic. and I would assume on the back somewhere he probably has to put something about how it has no association with sega.

I saw he posted he's working with Scott Shaw to reprint the earliest issues of Sonic that he had worked on under the title Sonic Tales or something and I think he could get in trouble by using Sonic as part of the title. it's being caught between a rock and a hard place because how the fuck would you advertise a sonic book without him on the cover, but it's not like anyone who isn't already aware of this and looking for it would buy it anyways. I also think it might get murky because as far as I'm aware he didn't come on the book until the teens so I have no idea why he believes he has the right to reprint the initial miniseries shaw worked on and he didn't.

But how many of them were characters the fans actually liked?
When I was an active reader in the 90s, I only liked two of Ken's ocs - julie-su and Rob O the Hedge. Beyond that, the rest sucked.

Though, Enerjak was positive to many readers. I've seen many positives about that villain, so not every character Ken creates is criticized.

I'm looking through https://sonic.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Ken_Penders'_creations and there's like 5 or so characters that I can see that would actually be missed in any meaningful capacity; Scourge, Lien-Da, Dimitri, Enerjak, Julie-Su, and Jules. Most of those guys were villains that made things interesting so you just weren't dealing with Eggman vs Sonic.
the interesting thing about Ken's work on Sonic, is for better or worse people did like it. granted I was reading it as an elementary schooler and it was all I had to explain my favorite games besides the cartoons but there was a huge fanbase. it wasn't just kids reading it. granted pretty much none of it holds up, I have fond memories of it but it's all crap. harmless kid crap, but crap nonetheless. it's easy to (and deservedly so in some instances) shit on everything Ken ever did but really he's largely responsible for an entire generation of kids interpretation of sonic. obviously the games and cartoons and now movies have a bigger reach but the comic was really huge for what it was.

like I said most of it is terrible, and people go into it now and laugh at it and talk about how weird it is, but really it was never targeted towards anyone over 10 in the first place. it's like watching a random episode of GI Joe from the 80s and complaining it's stupid. of course it is, it's a toy commercial with stupid moral lessons. sonic was essentially a game commercial with stupid moral lessons. yeah it has a really weird lore and world compared to what came later but it's not like they had some insane amount of information to work with. sega didn't give them shit. they told them to go buy the fucking game and play it themselves if they wanted to know what they were about.

Ken is an idiot who acts like he wrote the holy bible or something for kids and that whatever the fuck his pseudo-official fan fiction sequel is, is god's gift to comic books, but that goofy little hedgehog comic had a lot to do with the enduring popularity of the character in the west during the late 90s and early aughts when we either got no games, or games that sucked. and if he wouldn't have stepped up the melodrama and soap opera bullshit and introduced all the continuing plotlines and characters he did, it wouldn't have lasted as long as it did.

The Penders hate didn't come about until after the lawsuits, and people were mad that he was taking his characters with him. and that they rebooted. I've heard forever the book got better once Flynn took over from Penders around 170 or something but they didn't reboot for like another 100 issues. and that's when people got upset. and that's partially why his haters are almost as funny to me as he is. I don't understand what they're mad about. losing his work? I mean I guess it sucks the freedom fighters are gone but would most of these people realistically still be reading sonic the hedgehog at this point? do they read the IDW book? I doubt it.

In light of what you said, what was the overall interest in the comic before and after Ken introduced the melodrama nd plotlines?

it blew up. it was going to be cancelled with issue 50 so Ken went all in on the death of Robotnik storyline and melodramatic faggotry and it sold like crazy and more people started reading it and then it lasted another 200 issues before they rebooted it. him turning it into a soap opera for kids is what saved the book. before that it was mainly just one and done little comedy stories. there was some continuity but it was mostly just characters would return every now and then. his knuckles series and the change in direction for sonic essentially is what made it end up being the longest running licensed comic of all time. not that he is single-handedly responsible but the groundwork and direction the series went in under him is what the following writers did too. they just unlike ken were actually fans of the games so did their best to try to make it fit in more with that world. as far as me, I read it until 2005 or something probably. by middle school I couldn't be bothered to read sonic comics and I don't know if he was gone by the time I tapped out or not but I read it consistently the whole time until I just decided it was a little lame to be reading kid shit. I had also become aware of furries through the internet by that point and their association with sonic (largely through SatAM and Archie's comics) and I didn't want people to think I was one of those people because I still liked the hedgehog games and comics lol

apologies for a double post, I just wanted to clarify I'm not a Ken Penders defender or anything, I just really don't understand a lot of the frankly, visceral hatred people have towards the man and find it really funny. as a kid reading the comic, I remember reading letters pages where sometimes people would have just jumped in and be totally confused why it had fuck all to do with the games. there were back then plenty of people who disliked the comics for not being close enough to the games. from what I understand, post-reboot archie to a small degree and IDW's Sonic now has a lot of SEGA oversight and is basically exactly like the games. you'd think those people would consider Ken a hero for sabotaging the comics to the point they literally had to make them like the games. there are also people who hate him for taking the freedom fighter characters from sonic canon, like princess sally and rotor and them. Ken was one of the chief architects of those characters after the tv show ended for like 10 years, they probably love his work. are they mad because we didn't get sonic chronicles 2? the first one sucked! and the one thing I will agree with Ken about, even though the characters aren't exactly 1:1 with his comics, it was very obviously inspired by them. which when it came out I liked a lot because it was the first time I played a sonic game and was like huh yeah this is the sonic shit I know the crazy dark legion stuff.

there are plenty of things to laugh at him for, he is unintentionally hilarious. everything about his lawsuit and what he’s been up to since is just so weird. from the idea of continuing M25YL and Knuckles’ family in a weird spin off where he has to change all the characters but only vaguely, reprinting his old stuff despite them featuring licensed Sega characters, that time he tried to license out Anti-Sonic/Surge to neo nazis or whatever those guys were, the weird stuff he has said on twitter about cartoon character’s he worked on’s sex lives, the idea of releasing in app in 2024 dedicated to a SINGLE comic that’s an unofficial continuation of a licensed comic from 2003, the odd and frankly horrific change in art style over the years. Ken is a total artcow, but I really don't understand why people are always wishing death on him. he's just a harmless old retard who thinks too highly of his work, that was just simple and stupid little stories for kids.

do I think he should have been able to get the rights to all of those characters he made? no, not really. comic creators do deserve better compensation and despite 70% of them just being knuckles with different accessories he did come up with them, but really Archie's total incompetence is responsible for that. I don't blame him really I'd probably steal my shit back too if these retards were too dumb to keep track of copies of contracts. He also did totally fuck everything up for Ben Hurst trying to get that Sonic movie made, however I don't think that would have happened at the time regardless of Ben or Ken's differing movie pitches. That was when SEGA and TMS were making Sonic X. they weren't going to make and release an entirely separate animated Sonic movie at the same time that had absolutely nothing to do with what the brand had become by then when they were already making a cartoon show that was basically exactly like their newest games.

and people seem to really hate the idea he would consider reprinting his old work. which is also odd because half the people complaining about it have been complaining that they want sega to put it back out there anyways. and he does own it, who gives a shit? people act like Ken is irreversibly damaging the sonic IP by making the lara su chronicles. which Sega's incompetence has proven by now to just be literally impossible. Sonic 06, Boom, the initial movie design, if none of that shit killed sonic, and the furry porn artists or sonic.exe didn't do it, Ken and his terrible Knuckle's Daughter fanfiction can't do it either.

I say just let the old retard continue to do whatever he wants. it's funny. plus it took him 15 years to release 30 pages, it's not like he's ever going to finish all 7 volumes of lara su anyways. the best part is he legitimately thinks it's good. that's fucking hilarious. I could not IMAGINE finishing one of those pages and looking at it and thinking, god damn this is good stuff.

I think it’s also because Ken is very defensive about his lawsuit and, rather than trying to explain things calmly and rationally, he verbally attacks people when he is triggered by the situation. If I were in his shoes, I would keep my mouth shut or not respond to a lot of his haters. He is similar to Chris Chan in that, when he tries to respond to simple questions, he attacks when people target his weak points. Ken is more of a sensitive baby and a narcissist, despite being nearly in his 80s.

that's probably true. like I said I wasn't trying to white knight for him. I just think he's a harmless idiot. he's got a bad case of 'old man on the internet' syndrome where he thinks he needs to respond to everything. which I like, because it's more stuff to laugh at.

imagine being an old man and getting into an argument with a furry on twitter 3 times a day. that's hilarious. I remember reading a year or two ago he tried to make a discord server to talk to his fans on and people just got in there and started saying slurs and spamming furry porn until he had a mental breakdown over it. that's pure comedy gold. he's definitely a crybaby narcissist. but that's also why I can't help but not hate him. he's just too entertaining. he's just old and totally out of touch. the fact that people really despise him despite him really not doing anything is a never-ending source of laughs, I mean he did get Archie's license pulled, but really how many of these people were going to be religiously following that comic still today? and how many of them were only there because they liked all the stupid shit he put in there?

there's something almost endearing about the fact he has like 4 fans at all, and everyone else hates him for really doing nothing but screwing over a company that couldn't be bothered to even keep copies of their work for hire contracts, he's known specifically for working on something he resents and never cared about in the first place, but it's the only claim to fame he has. so he just keeps on going working on a spin off nobody asked for or wanted, and legitimately thinks it's amazing. it's all so absurd. Imagine being Ken, you wake up every day to 20 death threats from guys in diapers and fur suits who live with their parents, you're 70 something years old. you think you're writing the great american novel, but it's a poorly made 3d rendered comic book with cartoon characters breastfeeding. you can't even post what you had for dinner with your wife without some random guy being like YOU FAGGOT YOU RUINED SONIC. it's amazing. and the only people buying his work are all ironically laughing at it, and he thinks he's a big success.

@el bandito loco I think the deal with people being pissed off is that for all it being dumb as fuck, there was some interesting world building that fans enjoyed. From the various characters, places and so forth, sure some of it was stupid (Hello Nazi Echidnas and Ken using the famous poem) and downright plagiarized (i'm amazed to this day that Archie didn't get sued for having the Millenium Falcon or straight up Terminator shit in the Sonic Comkcs), but it was some really fun material for both the readers and fans to enjoy. So, I could see people being crossed with all this stuff getting swepped under the rug because of one guy. Having said that, I'd still rather enjoy the IDW ones, because even with all the stuff I said, it was just stupid cringe material and Ken should never be allowed to write.

But how many of them were characters the fans actually liked?
I liked the Ken Penders stuff because I thought the echidna designs were cool AF when I was 12. Like the mechanical dreadlock look is sick!
Knuckles14.jpg
And even when he didn't have specific characters in the comic, his wide range of echidna designs really inspired me as a fanartist.
There were so many colors, so many dreadlock designs!
KtE_12.JPG.jpg
I specifically remember the pink one, because I liked the tied look.
And you just didn't have that kind of design for the hedgehogs, or any species that was important. There weren't a lot of wild hair styles, no cool tied spines, anything, but then you get a character like Lien-Da:
tumblr_pwxjgplsf81u4is2oo1_1280.png
You've got a shitload of customization options. The wraps, the mechanical parts, the hair, it's so fucking cool!

And as stupid, and meme-y as this is, it's still showcasing a lot of fan character designs that young Sonic fans could draw from.

and he owns them all.

I think some of his hate also comes from the fact that there's now 0 chance of ever seeing characters like Bunnie, Sally, or Nicole in official media. Like how the IDW comic characters appeared in stuff like the mobile runner game, and merch.

I mean I don't doubt any of that. Hell when someone says Sonic the Hedgehog my instant thought process is to think of 2001, and I just got issue 99 or whatever at the grocery store and I get to the end, and it says for the rest of the story go play SONIC ADVENTURE 2 ON DREAMCAST and I was like dad you gotta take me to GameXChange because I have to play this game before next month. and lucky for me my dad happened to realize we should go because he wanted unreal tournament, and if he bought me the new sonic my mom wouldn't think he was wasting money on games for him. lol for all intents and purposes, as dumb and stupid as Archie Sonic got, that's my Sonic. fuck man I stuck around until 06 came out and just didn't work at all and I wrote the series off for a decade until I was nostalgic for my youth. when someone says Knuckles I think of a green motherfucker and the dark legion and Julie Su. my kid nephew is into the movies and the IDW books and been going through the archie stuff I still have laying around. I'll probably buy Ken's reprints if they see the light of day for him. I don't know that I could sit down and try to read any of them today and take it seriously, but again I don't know why anyone over the age of 10 was in the first place.
