Kerbal Space Program 2: Check your Stagin' Boogaloo - Looks like they plan to implement Nuclear Pulse Propulsion...

Oh shit, it's coming out in a couple of weeks.
This was still "fucking eventually" in my head.

In that spirit I will reply to this post from last decade:
if it at least was built in a different/in-house engine, it would have been worthy of some attention. if it's made in the same limited piece of shit then why are they even making a sequel?
Unity's gone through a bunch of incremental overhauls over the years (including multiple complete rendering rewrites and physics updates) while Kerbals is kind of an old-ass game that stinks of very early Unity. Presumably a lot of it is legacy code both in terms of which bits of Unity cruft they're built on and probably the dumbshit practices Unity encourages which are really 80% of the reason I've hated Unity since the beginning, despite using it myself. It could even actually be a real old engine build since a few big changes have broken compatibility for certain things, but I'm too lazy to check.

Unity itself is not actually particularly limiting as far as general engines go, provided you fuck the "unity way" of doing things off and handle shit yourself. KSP obviously must have always done at least some of this kind of thing but a sequel is a good excuse to rework stuff that wouldn't be worth touching otherwise.
Although honestly even just a graphical rework in modern Unity would be enough of a contrast from the current game to justify a "sequel" if they were gonna sorta rip people off. I kind of expected that's what'd happen when this was first announced but I guess they aren't doing that. So, cool.

Like I hate Unity too but that's mostly because of the kind of developers that use it, while in the hands of people that know what they're doing it's basically fine.

(Though just the graphics update would've been enough to get me back into it so personally I'm hyped for literally anything beyond that.)

Hopefully the modding scene won't change too much, the modding in ksp 1 is probably the reason I've put in more than 2k hours over the years.

While I hope the game is good, just a friendly reminder that Kerbal 2 is being dev'd by uber entertainment. People who have traditionally scammed and installed cryptominers in their previous games.

People hated them enough that they had to change their studio name.

They had the contract and lost it. Squad formed a new team and stole a bit less than half their dev staff (ie not the owners). Then they folded.

Who could imagined how this would turn out way back in August 2019.

3 1/2 years after announcement, its "releasing" as a bare bones early access version in a few days;

Dont worry though, they are totally going to deliver on all their promised features over the course of "early access".

This is utterly ridiculous

This was disappointing when I found out but I'm excited(?) to recreate my KSP1 experience of playing when it was a barebones physics gimmick game then forgetting about it for a few years.
Not launching with science is a real bummer though.

I don't doubt it'll get there eventually. Kerbaltism is powerful.

Imagine that, unplayable;

Heres a good laugh though, autistic consoomers celebrating whats important; imaginary green aliens being "diverse"

Man people really seem to be enjoying the excellent optimisation and bug-free experience and didn't set their hopes too high at all.

Really does remind me of pre-1.0 KSP so I'm certainly satisfied.

Anyway have a launch trailer:

They went with the "minions" looks for the Kerbals, then, well, fucked them off.

Sure, you see DIVERSE SPACE CREATURES in the trailers and in videos, but the buildings are kind of empty. No Kerbals wandering around the vehicle building chamber, the ones in the training area just look dumb and repeat the same thing.

The graphics upgrade is "meh" at best. They somehow managed to remove the quirky and funny 'jankiness' of the graphics and replace it with shit.

Kind of like comparing old WinME icons with app icons. App icons are sleek and focus group tested, your WinME icons are customed and fun.

It's missing a SHITLOAD of features. I get that it's early access, and that KSP1.0 launched with less, but holy shit, they had millions of dollars this time that they've obviously fucked off into diversity hires.

The specs are outrageous, plain and simple, and they're using specs as an excuse for CPU bottlenecking on stuff.

  1. Terrain optimization.
The current terrain implementation meets our main goal of displaying multiple octaves of detail at all altitudes, and across multiple biome types. We are now hard at work on a deep overhaul of this system that will not only further improve terrain fidelity and variety, but that will do so more efficiently.
  2. Fuel flow/Resource system optimization.
Some of you may have noticed that adding a high number of engines noticeably impacts framerate. This has to do with CPU-intensive fuel flow and Delta-V update calculations that are exacerbated when multiple engines are pulling from a common fuel source. The current system is both working and stable, but there is clearly room for performance improvement. We are re-evaluating this system to improve its scalability.
Nobody gives a shit about terrain. Nobody has EVER given a shit about terrain or biomes.

And why should we now?

There's no science objects.

I could write a longer review, but it would just be a waste of time since this is early access.

In short:

Go back and play KSP1 with a few CKAN mods rather than spend the money on this janky fuck.

>Wants cinematic ultra realistic HDR graphics that mimic reality
>What? It can't run on my potato computer/outdated game console

Retard gamer mentality lmao
That's just it.

This is one of those games where nobody really wanted HDR graphics. They were fine with basic graphics. The jankiness of the graphics was part of the charm.

Now we have bullshit smooth graphics. Who the fuck wants that when the Kerbal's space program is supposed to be janky as fuck.
