I'm inserted in the academic community, and let me tell you, the majority of researchers I work/study with are a bunch of people with egos as big as the sun. Kevin Allred isn't actually a professor, first of all, though his Twitter claims he is. He is, in fact, an adjunct lecturer (not sure what that is exactly, not ever having been involved with American academia) in Women's Studies (what else?) at Rutgers University.

An "adjunct lecturer" is as low on the academic scrotum pole as you can get and still be in front of a class teaching as the main guy (as compared to the graduate assistants much duty is foisted on while some actual "professor" is named on the course).

These positions are not tenure track and are renewed, generally, year to year or even semester to semester. "Tenure track" is the track that leads eventually to being a full professor where you have no fear of being fired for practically anything other than outright murdering someone in class. These positions are becoming more and more common as universities have turned into profit centers that mainly exist to suck up as much federal money as possible while spending as little money as possible on actual education.

Hiring worthless idiots like this is part of not only the general culture of virtue signaling but the fact that imbeciles like this guy are a dime a dozen. They may turn out to be psychos, criminals, or just plain idiots, but if they do you can just up and fire them. They're generally not even formally considered faculty.

I'm not saying there aren't good teachers stuck in these positions alongside cretins like this guy, but they're getting screwed. This guy is lucky to have any job at all, though that situation is unlikely to persist for very long after this.

The positions in less saturated fields not filled by bored retirees are left to a motley of the underemployed consultants and friends of proper professors helping with their courses, both of whom are more motivated by access to the university resources than the pay. Well now. I just looked on his Twitter. His last tweet was 7 hours ago. Given that it's 2.22 pm as I write this, and New York is five hours behind Britain, he was tweeting at 2.00 am local time.

I then read back and there was a constant stream of tweets timestamped until 24 hours ago, which would have been 9.30 am local time or thereabouts.
