I've heard about people shelling websites via mysql queries but I've personally never heard about a backup being compromised, especially not sure how that would have been possible considering they only had access to the xenforo admin panel
I don't think there is much point in dwelling on the identity of the hacker, but I think it was more than likely an 'enemy' of the farms, i.e. trans, furry etc. cause they all behave in the same way, they get some kind of scoop (in this case, a databreach) immediately want to brag about it (change avatars, delete nodes), then fuck it up (tried to export too many users from the db and crashed it)
And as Lil Wayne said.. real g's move in silence like lasagna, and all of the hackers I've known through the years have shared that sentiment

Props to him though, I never would have learned that I live in a country with an opt-out system for organ donation if it weren't for the zombussy tweet. Keep on seething on, Mr. Gibes.

You typically compromise backups by infecting the platform before a backup is run. Then next time the backup runs, bam. Infected backup.
Good sysadmins know this and keep more than one backup. Like several days worth, at least one from each of the last few weeks, and at least one from the last 3-6 months. Just rotating through those time frames, so if one backup is compromised the theory is not all of them will be. Best practice is keeping these backups in redundant physical locations as well.
Generally speaking it is impossible to have too many backups. The only real limit is storage, which is getting cheaper and cheaper.
Another way to compromise backups is by compromising the server the backups are stored on. Typically backup servers are not connected to any other servers, except when running the backup. This is because the only secure server is a single hashed hard drive buried under six feet on concrete in the middle of the desert. And even them someone could find the hard drive, and physical access trumps literally everything. If you get physical access there is always a way to get in. Always.
Some hack scripts have a payload that looks for running backups and exploits a vulnerability to get access to that server.

I'll stay on the organ donor list. There's an extremely low chance my remains end up in a front hole, and I'm happy with the odds they fail at aftercare and it rots out anyways.

I really hope that they actually work at a mental hospital or even an equalities office.
