King of the hill appreciation thread - Yup.

I’m worried about characters too.

Will Dale be used to lecture “anti-vaxxers”, or will he be himself?

Will the John Redcorn and Nancy situation still be seen as wrong, but none of the block’s business, or will we get lectured on how “actually, they’re just in a polyamorous thing chud”?

Will we get Bobby who naively falls into things that are toxic, or will he genuinely support cult politics as a new core of his character?

Will we get Bill who’s allowed to be the butt of jokes, or will we get no fatphobia and no mental ableism Bill?

I could go on and on. Obviously we won’t have answers until we’re further in, but I hope it’s closer to new B&B.

One of the most memorable episode s I've seen is Enrique-cilable Differences, the episode were Hank's coworker has marriage trouble and tries to talk to Hank about it.

Besides the episode being generally good the thing that really elevates it is how it takes a really overused sitcom plotline ("a side character suddenly becomes a center character" with the best example is Apu from Simpsons) and turns it around - You shouldn't get involved with people you barely know and you aren't obligated to, you will also probably be of little help and just make a virtual stranger dependent on you.

Plus it was the only episode where the writers did manage to make fun of Fox, something that Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama and American Dad usually do, except this episode never seem to punch down the network unlike the aforementioned four.

Now I'm into Season 8 and I just relived one of my all time favorite Hank Hill lines:

"Heck, Peggy, why don't you make the art? It can't be very hard. I mean, even the people who do it for a living don't seem very good at it."

God bless that man.

As for the reboot...yeah, I'm worried.

In the old show, Bobby Hill is a kid that jumps from one trend to the next, so if he was around today, he absolutely would jump on the Trans-Trender bandwagon. The difference though is that the old show always pulled Bobby back from the ledge from whatever trend he was on in that episode so that he realized not to go too far (He willingly passed on drinking the dog blood when he got roped up with the wizard people for example).

Today though, with the trans stuff...there is no way on planet Earth they'd be allowed to pull Bobby back from that ledge today. I think back to another "Bobby's fad of the week" episode when he got involved with the Christian Rock group and Hank brought him down to Earth with that "I don't want the Lord to end up in this box" speech. Well...I don't think "Bobby, I don't want your genitals to end up in this box" would fly today.

I dunno about them making Bobby bi, but I can definitely see an episode about Bobby sending money to an ethot and thinking she likes him. Bonus if there's a B-Plot about Boomhauer doing online dating and Bill subbing to an Only Fans.

I'm 100% positive I'm not the first person to ever say this; they just seem too obvious for a KotH story made in current day.

Been holding off since I heard the reboot was now in full affect, but I want to talk about it. Personally, the more I think on it, the less I want this reboot to happen. I cannot see it being good and would rather KOTH had the graceful death it did rather than this.

My biggest concern is how the show will come back. If it is a retro return where Arlen is still in the 90s/00s, they run into the problem that most stories have been told. If it is current year, god help us all.

KOTH in current year seems like it fundamentally couldn’t work. It was a show bathed in the 90s and 00s eras, so bringing it to modern day would be wrong. For those who disagree, answer me this… Dale Gribble? How the hell is this character going to work in current year? He is a character based on Alex Jones, you know, the man being strung up for everything he owns. There is no way Dale could go well in current year. Either he will get political or be completely diluted to being an aliens joke. Dale Gribble alone scares the shit out of me given how much he echoes current year. In the 2000s it was funny, now, his shit is a little too real.

Another issue is Hank’s Republican politics. This has already been diluted given the he wouldn’t vote in 2016, which btw, goes against the episode where he learned and preached it was important to. Hank doesn’t fully fit current left or right, and both sides have claimed him to some degree. Just like Dale, being impartial isn’t going to work. It doesn’t help that any plot I hear for Hank/Bobby dealing with current year is LGBT shit.

There is also the issue of Khan and John Redcorn, who may be changed, or are going to be, to fit current year standards.

KOTH is one of those shows that works better as a period piece. I cannot see it evolving gracefully. Maybe I am too cynical given how shit 99% of reboots are, but I feel that KOTH should stay dead.
One thing I'm very concerned about is the animation quality, for those of you that have seen the new BAB Series I'm sorry but Titmouse's animation is just irredeemably awful. The new background characters that we have look like a weird fusion of metapocalypse and Bojack horseman designs and just don't feel Beavis and butthead at all. The show's framerate with its tweening just looks really off and there's even sequences with the main duo or panning shots with characters walking across a road, the framerate just chugs like crazy and I can't believe there having these kinds of issues. If the show comes back I pray they use another studio because it would be so disappointing to see KOTH with this kind of animation.
