The way it's worded still isn't very clear. It could mean anything from he didn't complete the season to he didn't even do one episode.
This sucks. I was kind of on the fence about this revival, but I'd rather they'd just not do it now. I could live without Luanne and Lucky, but no Dale would be pointless.

Rest in peace. dale I thought his leftie political videos were cringeworthy, but I enjoyed King of the Hill and his voice acting none the less.
It would certainly be sad, but unfortunately, the people we love do die, and life trudges cruelly along, not even acknowledging the passing. I don't think anyone involved would be as ghoulish as to recast, but having Dale not be around could be a poignant bit of life in Arlen. I'd hope they would at least do a funeral episode.
First Luanne, then Lucky and now Dale. May his legacy of bug spraying, conspiracy theories and his secret pocket sand weapon carry on.
