I've also heard that Steam algorithm actually works so well that the 30% cut is actually justified. If you put out an actually good game (or at least one that's decent and unique/fresh enough) and even just a few people unanimously like it, that can snowball into consistent growth through recommendations to people who have played/wishlisted similar games.

This obviously works both ways, bad games that people do not like will get buried. All those scary "100 shovelware titles are released on Steam every day" -statistics don't seem to have harmed the platform in any meaningful way.
