Kiwi Dominions 6 Community - TW:WH3 but for actual autists

Dominions is a very current keeping game, the later versions amount more to large updates.

Id say 6 is what you want because the core gameplay comes from your interactions with other players, single player is is ok but the cpu will never be able to fight you After you figure out a few basic tactics that it cant beat.

Essentially the cpu relies on extra resources and creating large armies and then assaulting you or its neighbors.
Hm, I'm usually turned away from games that are multiplayer "focused" like that, but the Dominions fanbase seems to be quite large... Thanks, will probably check it out!

You can still enjoy single player and in 6 they made more of an effort to update it so the cpu has better tactical depth, but it will never be able to counter play you like a person could

If you do get into it I suggest sticking with one nat for a while just to get it down and figure out how to play it. I'd recommend starting with MA era since it's a nice in between of EA magic depth and more heavy use or LAs magic width with little depth (lots of magic paths but no powerhouses).

Find something you thinks cool, I'd just advise against starting off with Ind (a lot of bullshit involved.) and a popkill nat (MA ermor or ashpodel). If I had to recommend some it'd be Ulm, Man, Pangea, or Jotunheim.

Looks like LA again, ok! Well if that is the case I am feeling like Erytheia or maybe Caelum. Ive been trying to avoid blood magic outside of bloodstones as a personal preference for being “good”.

Can we still use SCBM?

Sure SCBM is mostly just rebalancing. We'll run it again, and yeah it seems like we'll be running LA. I'll type a chart tomorrow here, if you guys want feel free to call dibs on your nats. Is there a pre-made map we'd want to use or should I map gen for us again?

I remember this game from way back when. I think the version I had was Dominions 2, maybe 3. It was a fun little game and Abyssia (sp?) was my favourite nation. I used to make my pretender a literal fountain of blood stacked with magic paths. Couldn't move but at some point I think I got a spell named Sky Swing or something like that and could then move my pretender about. Always liked the mental image of looking up to see a giant black stone fountain hurtling down from the sky trailing blood behind it like a big gothic rainbow.

What are the options for avoiding PL'ing if I asked to join one of the community games? I had a look and Dom 6 appears to only be available on Steam, not GOG (sadly). Does one person host the game locally and what info is shared? Steam usernames? It would suck if after all this VPN stuff, I dox myself because I wanted to send little men in platemail marching across a map.

When I host I use Blitzserver which is a community server hosting run by one guy out of good will. To my knowledge all that is identifiable to the player is the CD-Key which people can spoof but the game will for example notify the lobby or admins if someone is playing multiple players. Blitzserver is relatively anonymous and was used by players on 4chan too (don't recommend joining their games they bitch out and go AI a lot).

There is finally hosting illwinter does with the lobby browser however it lacks administration tools I like for hosting games like me being able to extend . It would be easier to invite normy friends via that though I think it also just uses CD-key as the identifier but there may be some steam integration I'd have to double check.

There is the OG play by email but Blitz and Illwinter's servers are superior to that.

@LowlyPheasent Thanks for that.

Oh, "Early Age", right? I read that and thought it meant EA games.

I haven't bought the game as yet. I'll have to look into the specifics of how this works but sounds promising.

How long do your games usually take and how long is allowed to submit each turn? It's forever since I played this so I'm a little hazy on details. I've also just seen that it's €44 the cheeky fuckers.

A LOT has changed since 2, and 6 has the must new user unfriendly UI by far. I could go over some mechanics if you'd like but there's a lot of new systems to it. Generally speaking every Dominions adds a lot of major stuff. To list a few new features just from 5 to 6.
  • New magic path glamour
  • Mounts and Mounted units are separate entities
  • New Nats
  • Terraforming spells (mostly end game but cool to change the game board)
  • Map layers (by default theres an underground layer+standard layer but custom maps can have even more.)

Games last a long while, about a month. If you blitz (get everyone on at once and play a couple-few hours straight on a weekend you can really cut the time down but that can be tough, anymore than 6 people and it's a struggle to work a schedule for everyone.

I'm fine doing extensions when people need them, but don't constantly rely on me for it. I usually have a 32 hour timer set. If it's a big game with time consuming turns late game I can crank it up though.

Thanks. I'll probably skip out on this one as I'd just hold you up but I'll watch a few videos on the game and maybe buy it to join at some later point. I've grown to dislike Steam though. What little gaming I do I usually try to buy from GOG.

I will spin up a map come Good Friday via mapnuke unless anyone wants a particular premade map and enough players agree to it. After map genning I will spin up the server and then link it. You'll have a day to submit tendies and we'll (hopefully if everyones in) start Saturday or later on Easter Sunday.

If more people wish to join between now and then I will add them to the player roster. If anyone knows any fellow kiwis interested feel free to invite them. As it stands I won't be able to blitz this and we are getting to a player count it's not usually doable with anyhow so this one will be a standard slow start, no blitz.

Sounds good I prefer pbem anyway, main reason I got into this game was to have a game to play when life got busy and I started to have responsibilities.

Looks like a good turnout so far as well, im excited!
