🥝 Community Kiwi Farms Community Doom Mapping Project No. 2! - Now with custom Kiwi-assets!

This might be worth sticking my head into for a bit, when I'm in the same mood to replay Lilith or Archie. Fucking hate it says "on par with myhouse.wad" in the description, I think that wad was pretty shit so using it as a positive yardstick irks me.
I think the reactions this mod makes from people are funny.
The game starts off a lot like a postal game, but starts getting a lot more surreal and full-blown horror around 3 levels in. (Game starts changing around the shopping center level) It took me around 15 hours to finish the TC over the course of a few days, albeit I do play games slower than most people, and how many hours of that was just me walking around confused I dunno, but there's still a lot of meat here.
If you liked games like Cry of Fear or Afraid of Monsters it reminds me a lot of those games gameplay-wise and story-wise (its... all in le head!), except the shooting feels more like doom instead of half life.

all the talk i've seen about it though makes it sound like the game is SUPER UBER DUPER FUKD UP MAYNE. perhaps its shocking to some people but at its "worst" It honestly felt like generic shock value to me, again, sorta like a postal clone.

With all that said, I did enjoy my time with it. The shooting felt good, I thought the story was interesting to piece together even if the tropes in it were rather played out for me, and the progression gets really obtuse on purpose at points as well, but if you're able to figure that out then I think it'd be worth your time.

I haven't played Afraid of Monsters, but I hated Cry of Fear. My only personal experience with it was playing it co-op with my Ex and it being an unstable, visually buggy piece of shit. Videogames don't scare me by default so I have to go on gameplay and story instead, and from looking at Cry of Fear review videos in the past, I have zero interest in it: it sounds like emo, autofellatio, edgelord headwank. I may still try Pink Valley, but I'm already cringing and I'm expecting to get bored of it quickly if those are the best comparisons.

Also, on topic: I didn't feel like doing any scripting or editing or recording narration tonight, I just spent a while figuring out file extensions randomly pulling assets (some of these songs sound amazing in Arachno) and how to get into shit, so I just whipped up a thumbnail in like 10 minutes instead:

If you didn't enjoy Cry of Fear's gameplay then pass on the pink valley lol. It isn't getting any awards story-wise (it's very hard to follow, and relies on a lot of interpretation from the player. I enjoy media like that, but it's not for everyone. The maps themselves are often purposely obtuse to progress through as well.) and it takes a lot of inspiration from AoM and CoF in the gameplay department. If you didn't like CoF's gameplay mechanics then I'd pass on this. (albeit I never played co-op, can't comment on that.)

Not caught up on the thread. Not had a chance to play yet and wanted to avoid spoilers. Replying because was @Ed.

Give a bit of an origin story: Are you longtime DOOM mappers/Did you come over from other communities like Duke3D or Quake? Or were you mapping laymen who just chose to make KFD1+2 for the sake of it?
(I wasn't involved with KFD2 and @ArticleWriter already filled this in. But sort of. I'm an indie dev as a hobby, but I've soft booted from Doom and indie dev communities. (Half-Life communities are a bit more chill but have a different kind of autism.) It's not as if I was omega hitler schitzo either. It was dumb stuff like saying I watched Uncle Bob's Clean Code videos after the Factorio dev recommended them. Or saying mods shouldn't use engine update channel to post off topic shit.

I really liked community anthologies, and map packs that focus on smaller maps.

I'd made maps for some games, but I've only really publicly released Half-Life stuff.

Which is why for the next project, if you people want to see it of equal quality (or better), we definitely need help on the team. What we especially need are mappers who understand scripting / coding for the hub. I tried to help with that, but I'm completely hopeless when it comes to scripting. Because of that, @Dull Pencil was extremely overworked by the end. Without his technical prowess, KF2 would've ended as just another map pack. We NEED more guys.
This is part of the reason I keep things small. I've seen other Doom projects constantly shit the bed because some user decided to get fancy with scriped weapons, player stats, physics changes, texture replacements, and sound changes, and ended up fucking up other people's work. Or just ballooning the file size as they dumb hours of custom MP3s and sprites into the project that add little of value to the project.

Given the division something as small as "here's the map format we're going to use" caused, trying to run a big project with a lead making gameplay and asset decisions seems doomed to fail.

There's also a matter of scale. A big multi-month high quality project is a big ask, while asking for a few hours of shitposting and tutorial tier maps is a much more reasonable ask.

I'm probably going to be off topic here, apologies before hand.

If we could assemble a team, it would be amazing to achieve a custom Quake or even a Half-Life mod. Can you imagine?

Midnight recently reviewed a physiological horror Total Conversion wad called "The Pink Valley" in which the first few levels have the player become a mass shooter, going against civilians, dogs, and police in an elementary school, supermarket, neighborhoods before the monsters arrive.
This mod looks cool and even has a full replacement for the weaponry but oh boy, isn't the Youtuber annoying and borderline soy, having checked his other videos. Not sure if he would do good with the KF mod except to make a bit of a scene. For what's worth, he has covered polemic mods alright.

You can rename the mod file to .zip and open it in Windows
Yeah, that's what I was already doing, I was sort of just hoping there was some specific tool or even some autistic all-in-one suite that makes 'ripping' things a lot more convenient

Honestly, 50% of the reason I thought Pink Valley could be a good future video is looking at this guy and hearing his longplay ESL commentary, and thinking 'pretty sure I can do a lot better'.

lol why? Cuz it's ZDoom? They hinted that you should had done that for prboom+?
Pretty much. That way more people would play it, or something like that. Everything should be done the same way, every time.

ZDoom maps that keep the Doom gameplay should make a comeback, but ever since KDiZD, the Troonworld tards have been obsessed with making stuff for (PR)Boom instead.

People don't realize what a grind actually making something to completion is. I type this as I should be working on my TempleOS release for August 11th. People excited to work on a new project shouldn't wait, just start grinding and realize what a grind it actually is.

Yea, I agree. I only wanted to change some things that are hard coded in Doom, just to mix shit up a bit and only ZDoom offered that. I honestly don't get the obsession with Boom. Must everything work the same way every fucking time? And it's not like Boom is vanilla in any way. Plus you have things like DeHackEd and DECOhack that does the same things as ZDoom, but in a much more convoluted way.

Any hints on what this years release will have?

we lacked the resources and manpower to create more characters in 2D with full rotations.
I wonder if it'd be possible to grab frames in all 8 directions of his idle, walk cycle and shooting animations and make a proper 2D chuddy. I'm surprised there's not some kind of software plugin or suite for doing something like this.

Contributing to your derail but Deus Ex is kind of what the hub level reminded me of and that's something that does have an editor. I imagine it'd be a PITA to do though lol.
If there's ever a third community project I'll make a map for it.
I almost want to start fleshing out a map in anticipation and then detail it when the theme is released. However I feel like a map needs a theme before it can even be created. I'd suggest a mapper thread but as mentioned before a few times I also feel like it wouldn't get enough usage to justify itself.

I want to throw this out there and see how the KF Doom nerds feel about it.

SEKTUR 666

A reskin of all the enemies into the characters belonging to the Sektur. Or maybe more widely known as Internet Bloodsports.

I’m going to try to do a mock up of Nick Rekieta as the Archvile.

Maybe thinking a Ralph Pinkie or PPP Mancubus

I'm mostly a mapper for Heretic, but I have a friend that does the Doom maps. I guess it's the same wavelength of knowledge, but I'll have a chat with him and see if he wants to contribute to future projects.

Edit: themes are not always essential for mapping.
