Guide to the Combustion Engine for Retards

Become an Engineer and want to know how to get the station Generator running before the angry voices in your head beat you up? Read on dear viewer

Part 1: How Engine make Electricity
The Station uses a thermoelectric engine. What this means is that power is made depending on how large of a difference of temperature is on the two loops as demonstrated below

Engine Complete2.png

as you can see there is a hot loop and a cold loop. This is important as the hotter the hot loop is and the colder the cold loop is the more energy can be produced. The "Carrier Gas" radiates (Or 'Carries') the temperature to the engine. So in the hot loop it goes into the hot room temperature exchanger and gets really hot and in the cold loop it goes through the space radiators and gets cold.

Part 2: Set us up the Engine

as depicted below the Engine starts with no gas and all the pumps turned off and valves closed

unset engine.png

you need to run around and turn these pumps on and set em to max. There are also 2 valves also click these so the light next to them is green. If your colorblind right click examining them will tell you whether the valve is CLOSED or OPEN, we want both valves to be OPEN. Done correctly your setup will look like this (with all the pumps being animated and shit)

valvesonconditional.png

ok now its gassing time grab your canisters and arrange them like so

wrench canister.png

and click on them with a WRENCH with HELP INTENT and youll see their graphic changed so they are wrenched to the connectors like so Do not forget to wrench a canister in the bottom right here!

wrenchedcanister.png

and now we need to actually activate the burn in the burn loop head south

the button.png

and hit the igniter button with an open hand and if done correctly soon you shall see fire

thebutton2.png
Finally we need to set the SMES which distribute and store the power for the station head WEST through this door

SMES Supplemental.png

click on the SMES with a hand and youll see an interface just hit these buttons

default smes.png

done correctly it should look like this with it either saying charging or partially charging

Congratulation you have now done the bare minimum as an Engineer and ensured the station isn't an unpowered shithole.

Feel free to experiment with different gasses and whatnot for best results

Q: the burning chamber is no longer burning?
A: the fire does eventually burn through the gasses however it can still be very hot in there check this console [shown below] for temperature and if it is still a very high temperature you should be fine. However if you need more burn just hook up some more canisters.

Q: There is not enough power to start the pumps on the loop
A: you're fucked buddy, go wire up the solars instead

Q: is this optimal?
A: Fuck no I don't know anything about atmospherics, it will however, power the station.

Q: The engine make noises and sparks
A: I usually ignore it and nothing bad has happened yet. I suspect its due to the fact the engine is trying to produce more power than its 500KW rating.

Hope this is actually helpful and maybe reduce the number of plasma flood incidents in engineering. Fun fact you do not need to open the valve on the canister itself while it is wrenched to a connector. Unlike some other databases this will release the poisonous plasma into the air instead of the connector

Just adding some shit. The minimum amount you need to get it started is 2 plasma and 2 oxygen in the chamber, and ideally all four nitrogen in the cool loop. This won't give you a lot from the TMGs but it will keep you going. The happy medium I've found which keeps the output a bit more acceptable (imo) is 3 plasma, 4 oxygen in the chamber, 3 nitrogen and one plasma in the cool loop but add that plasma in at your own risk. It's effective but could bite you in the ass if you're not careful. This increases the pressure a bit into the 5 figures in the hot loop but it does not compromise your output.

Speaking of pressure. If you overload the hot loop with too much gas and the pressure gets too high, the hot loop will choke and you will lose power. Monitor it and nigger rig it to reduce the pressure if you need to by partially draining the hot loop into your now empty canisters. Typically if you start to exceed 13kpa you will see a reduction in output.

For the SMES in general, moving all four to 150000w output is just as effective and helps them all charge faster. With this, one SMES will end up on the back burner because it's just not needed by the station (you can switch the output off for that one if you want as well I guess) and will charge way before the other ones. You can reduce the input of that and let the other three catch up which gives you some form of redundancy until the solars are wired.

You can replace the power cell in the engine room APC to kick start that if worst comes to worst, there is always at least one fully charged high capacity power cell in the tool room directly above the engine room.

Q: The engine make noises and sparks
Yeah that's just energy not going to the SMES. It tends to correct and settle down by itself after a few minutes, if you're going to overload it to an extreme degree the TMGs will start getting damaged. Better learn how to repair them if you kill them or you'll get fed to the engine instead

Also, I will not be there this coming saturday (I will today though). I may tempmin Magi_Chan as a stopgap.
Do me. I'm a professional tard wrangler.
You can put a Nitrogen canister (or really any other gas) in the hot loop. It's actually better to do so because you need oxygen as fuel to make the chamber even hotter.

He does it for FREE

Lmao what the fuck happened today :story:
not necessarily today just the last few times there were a couple of oops incidents in engineering

For anyone wondering, its 2 plasma : 3 oxygen to burn 100% of the gas.
