Klonoa - that one weird rabbit cat thingy is now a quarter of a century old.

That and Klonoa 2. That game just turned twenty and has yet to get a digital release in any form.
Klonoa 2 almost impossible to play. It doesn’t play nicely with emulators (last time I checked), it doesn’t play nicely with freemcboot, and the disc costs a shit ton.

A rerelease of it would be nice.

I not sure when you last checked but I emulated it recently and it's fairly playable since they fixed most of the worst errors that even I couldn't stomach when I was desperate to play it again. I would still prefer an official release, but right now it's the best we got without a hardcopy.

Missing Sound

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: Some areas have no music and sound effects are missing completely. Skipping too
  • Workaround: Fixed on 1.7 dev builds. For Older builds change SPU to async and lower latency to 3ms
Show patches

Bad graphics

  • Type: Note (not an issue)
  • Description: Missing floor textures or bad colors as a side effect from the patches(see screenshots). Volk City, Volkan Inferno And Dark Sea of Tears are the most likely to crash without the patch. Other Levels may load and be completely playable.
  • Workaround: Go to System tab of PCSX2 and disable "Automatic Gamefixes", and re-enable it whenever a level needs it.

Miscolored objects or enemies

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: Certain objects and enemies appear as the wrong colors such as moving red Goomis(usually green orbs you can hang from) and Golden Kitons(Helicopter/hovering enemy).
  • Workaround: Go to Config > Video (GS) > Plugin Settings, and switch to Software mode by setting Renderer to any of the "(Software)" options.

Required objects missing

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: Some objects needed to progress further don't appear where they should.
  • Workaround: This is automatically resolved as long as Automatic Gamefixes is enabled on the System tab. You can manually enable the fix by going to Config > Emulation Settings > EE/IOP tab, and setting EE/FPU to "Nearest or Negative".

Missing fire effects

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: Fire effects do not display in Volk Inferno and Joilant(see screenshots).
  • Workaround: Fixed on latest dev build.

Volk City hang

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Major
  • Description: When moving to one of the parts in the Volk City vision you get just a black screen with sound.
  • Workaround: Currently needs the following patches.

I would imagine it was before these changes, because I remember it being unplayable. I’ll have to give it a shot again.

I'd love a proper Klonoa 3 game one day even though it's probably never going to happen. Bandai Namco tends to neglect a lot of its other video game series. (:_(
It’s kind of a shame as the first two games had a very interesting premise going on which they seemed to just straight up abandon in subsequent games.

Both games talked about the nature of dreams and how most of them tend to be all but forgotten.

Klonoa in 2 makes no mention of anything in the previous game and he ends up getting booted out of the dream he’s in at the end of both. Implying that every time he solves whatever problem he’s sent down to deal with, he gets taken out and he forgets everything. Including Huepow and Lolo. If he does remember, he’s not saying anything.

It’s such an intriguing concept and it felt like they were building up to something, especially considering Popka’s comment about him looking like the Goddess Claire. But for whatever reason they dropped it all in favor of the GBA games that follow their own canon.

I'd love to see a platformer on the PS5 where he deals with memories. They could add characters lke Guntz and Janga in it and give them a unique backstory.

I think I still have the GBA games. Can't play them though due to lack of device. :(

That's where the GBA games and the discontinued comic comes in. Dream Champ Tournament and the comic both show that Klonoa does actually remember and recognize Lolo, Popka, and Lunatea in general since the Lunatea cast (and Lunatea itself, at least in the comic) shows up in those.

We have a Klonoa thread? A neat little detail I like from the second game is near the end Leorina names all the emotions from the other kingdoms in Phantomilian/Lunatean/whatever (6:18):
If you listen, all the emotions sound like the names of the kingdoms; tranquility=La-Lakoosha, joy=Joilant, discord=Volk/Bolk, indecision=Mira-Mira. Also, the word for sorrow sounds like "Huepow."

In the cutscene after the fight (12:10 in the video), when Klonoa is conforting the King of Sorrow, Kumiko Watanabe shows that conlangs don't have to sound silly and cartoonish.

I really like the second game if it wasn't obvious.

Klonoa 2 is pretty much among my most favorite games of all time, with the first one not too far behind. It’s little details like what you mention that show that the people behind the game care a lot about their work.

Speaking of all the little things that are neat, especially near the end of the game, I always liked how, near the end of the penultimate level's BGM, you can hear the King of Sorrow calling out for help.

And special shoutouts to the level before that for mixing in several songs from both Klonoa 1 and 2 into its BGM.

It's not a new game, but fuck it, I'm happy that 2's finally getting a re-release in some form so more people can actually play it.
> Switch exclusive

because the Wii release went so well. On one hand, I hope this sells because Klonoa always deserved better. On the other hand I hope the series stays dead because it's The Current Year and a new entry would suck.

Wrong, it's coming to pretty much everything
Also seems they are both new remakes rather ports of the wii and ps2 games

I was really lucky I got a physical release at a reasonable price five years back.
I got one about twelve years ago, when prices were sane.

There's a demo for both games on Asian PS stores. I got one from the HK PS store and tried both games out.

They play quite well. I wasn't sure how the Klonoa 1 remake would play given that it was a Wii game, but the controls are basically the same as Klonoa 2. Works perfectly on a controller. I'm looking forward to this release.

Apparently the remakes are coming out on all platforms at the same time. Only just found out about this.

Very smart move on their part I must say. I was prepared to wait another few months or so.
