Legend of Zelda thread - Lorefags GTFO!

If totk came out three years earlier with a good follow-up story instead of pointless reboot with stupid mechanics, it could have been a winner. That being said I did like the arrow fusion system and I wish it was in Breath of the Wild. Which I started another playthrough of the other day, but will likely never play totk again.

Hey remember when you wished you knew more about those Zonai guys? Something something monkey's paw. They're not barbarians, they're space furries with a lotus fetish.

I can only guess Nintendo was going to do the 10,000 years ago story but things spiralled out of control until Zelda ate a rock and turned into a dragon with a sword in her head (preceded by partying with kangaroo people, who also happen to be her aunt and grandfather.)

Pure magic. It has my favorite iterations of every character in the series, by far. I wish we'd get a proper sequel, this open world formula could really mesh well with sailing.

Playing Windwaker on my phone mounted to a dualsense has been a fun ghetto handheld to lug around the last couple weeks. Gonna play through TP next and probably MM after that.

A reminder on how much this sub-series toned down its own scope on each entry:
HW: A celebration of the series with tons of recognizable characters and full of fanservice reminding the franchise best hits (minus capcom) on a different format.
AoC: A wanking of the most recent entry of the franchise, in a way to hype the next one, although it still had most of the recognizable faces on the game and a rep for each the memorable Zelda races.
AoI: Zelda goes on a adventure with the shoehorned furry race that isn't even relevant on the most recent entry of the franchise.

Might be the case since AoC, but they are doing a terrible job at it.
-ToTK completely ignored AoC events.
-ToTK was clearly a DLC to BoTW that suffered feature creep, so they made a new game, but they spent way too much time trying to justify said DLC costing the price of a full game while taking place on the same setting and sharing similar mechanics, resulting in the final product being an underbaked mess.
-Plot wise, ToTK is an internal struggle between trying to be a sequel to BoTW while wanting to be its own thing, the result of this struggle was thanos-snapping all the Sheikah tech from the world to make way for the enlightened furries.
-Recently released EoW, takes place on the downfall timeline and ignores all this furry rabble.

AoI really feels out of place and is just being brought way too late to the market, ToTK hype is already gone and the trailer doesn't even explain if the game is a sequel, plot wise, to AoC or not.

I also doubt the core Zelda team has this much "love" for BoTW/ToTK to make them the true and honest new direction for Zelda here on forward, otherwise ToTK would, at least, had DLC like BoTW.

If ToTK was released way earlier, I wouldn't count out a "third game" continuing the plot and using a different setting, but after a glorified DLC taking almost the same dev time of the original game, I believe even the devs are tired of it.

Still, like 3D Sonic, 3D Zelda will still be a hard to safe crack:
-They could say "fuck it" and go Souls-like after everyone suffering genre fatigue.
-They could double down on the open world survival stuff, but putting actual dungeons this time.
-They could go the Dark Cloud route, with procedurally generated dungeons while the main objective is to rebuild a place.
-They could tone down everything and just do the OoT/WW/TP formula again with memorable scenarios and dungeons.

Funny enough, all these options feel terrible, but such is the fate of this legendary non-ARPG franchise.

This is all anybody wants. Wind Waker 2 would be the easiest way to do this right.

I think the only terrible option would be not doing the above, really. Worst of all would be another BotW game but with a new gimmick tacked on, and none of the problems or complaints addressed. I'd rather see Zelda fucking die than that.

I feel like this will at least be the end of the Wild saga of sorts. There's not really anywhere for them to go now. Breath of the Wild already got a prequel, it seemed pretty clear the time between it and Tears of the Kingdom was peaceful, and Ganondorf is like, super dead now. No way they can bullshit their way into using the same map for a third main game, we already have underground and sky layers in Hyrule, nowhere else for them to expand.

Also feels weird how much Link has been reeled back. First Echoes of Wisdom where he's not the main character, now here where there's no real way for him to show up in any meaningful manner.

I bet they'll still have him show up through a magic time portal out of nowhere like they did with the descendants in AoC, essentially lying about how this is supposed to be a prequel to the events of TotK (just like AoC also did)
 
To add to the ToTK hate-train, I like how everyone starts immediately referring to Ganondorf as the demon king as soon as he gets a hold of a secret stone (awful awful name for them btw). He’s just some dude who only gets his power from holding a pebble, and everyone starts glazing him as the super uber ultimate evil ever.

G-Dorf knows way too much about the stones for a guy who only just learned they existed what I assume was a few weeks before he got a hold of one anyway, not even mentioning the screwed up inconsistencies over how powerful the stones are depending on who has one.

It's not a bad game. Even a subpar Zelda game is a good game overall. I don't like it because it does something a sequel should never do, and that is to undermine the game it's based on.

You defeated the world-ending threat and brought peace back to Hyrule? Fuck you, here's a new one. Actually, it's been there all along. You beat all the shrines? Fuck you, you're starting at three hearts again. Got the master sword? Fuck you, it's broken now.

I constantly have the feeling that I'm forced to play BotW again, a game which I've already beaten. The building gimmick is impressive, but it doesn't change that fact.

The game is fine, but it's the first time that the series feels like it's treading water. Every Zelda game before was a step forward, even though it wasn't always the best direction.

Isn't that like saying Halo 3 is the same as Halo 2. Direct sequels are similar to their predecessor.

I think it expands on the previous game and builds upon it I don't think it undermines it. But I respect your opinion.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Halo 2 and 3 don't take place on literally the same map where you have to do literally the same things again.

True, but those are pretty far removed from each other and don't feature the same characters. The only other direct sequels like TP and MM (I'm discounting Zelda 2, because they were still figuring out the series at that point) didn’t just repeat the games they follow up. Ganon is not just back in either.
