Autism speaks, now with plastic bricks instead of puzzle pieces.

Since I have autism or some other mental illness, (also why I'm A KF user) I am an adult and like Lego. All other online discussions of Lego are objectively shit; The /lg/ general on 4chan's /toy/ is filled with schizos of the worst kind and people who are too retarded for their own good, much like the rest of 4chan. I refuse to use Reddit so I can only imagine how bad discussion is on there. Brickset has a forum but it's pretty barren, and nobody uses Lugnet anymore.
So Kiwi Farms is my last hope, and I know some of you spergs have to like Danish plastic as well so let's talk about it goddammit.

My primary interest is old sets from the 80s-90s, themes like Pirates, Castle, Space, Town, and their various subthemes. However, just because I'm a boomer doesn't mean this is specifically a thread for old Lego, but if you appreciate 25+ year old plastic you are cool.

Where to buy Lego

Bricklink

The main site for buying both discontinued vintage sets as well as finding bricks, minifigs, and anything else related to Lego is BrickLink.
BrickLink works as a reseller market where users can buy/sell pieces, sets, minifigs from any year with the only caveat being it must have been made by Lego. For spastics like me, BrickLink is where I do must of my buying, I also sell sets/pieces that I don't want and are not necessary to the collection I'm trying to create and use that money to buy more Lego I do want. Most sellers operate like this, although there are some people dedicated enough to make selling Lego a full time job.

Brickset
Brickset isn't a site to buy Lego, but is a good way to see every set in a certain theme/subtheme, and also gives you a price guide of what sets are going for on Bricklink. It's also very handy to keep track of your collection.

eBay
Everyone knows about eBay, it's so ubiquitous that even your parents and grandparents buy and sell shit on there. What makes eBay appealing (although this gets rarer and rarer every passing year) is the potential to get really good deals on sets or lots of sets, usually through auctions. However, in my experience unless you get lucky and literally no one else bids on it except you. You can also get better deals by lowballing sellers if they let you make an offer on listings, which is hit or miss. As well as bulk lots, AKA Tupperware tubs full of bricks which can be a good way to part out sets you want.

Lego's own website
Lego has it's own website where you can buy new sets. Sometimes they have deals, but again, new sets in general don't interest me.

Retail Stores
Stores like Wal-Mart will have clearance deals on Lego where you can find stuff for cheap, but scalpers know this too and if you have scalpers in your area they will clean out stores to resell them at a higher price. Fortunately for us, we're KF users and don't go outside so this isn't an issue.

The online Lego community

AFOLs
The most common name for manchildren that like Lego is AFOLs, or Adult Fans of Lego. An acronym I've always hated because it doesn't roll off the tongue very nicely, but it's what has stuck throughout the years. As I said earlier, most Lego discussion sites suck, but there are many YouTube channels based around Lego and yes they're very autistic.

JangBricks
Jang is one of the most popular Lego YouTubers, and buys pretty much every new set and reviews them. He also doesn't look like he gets much sleep, and has a fervent hatred for people who comment on his videos, pointing out errors he makes. He's a weird looking dude but his videos in a vacuum are pretty alright.

R.R. Slugger
R.R. Slugger is a guy who makes videos about vintage Lego, which is why I know of him. His video production is really good, and his channel's growing steadily. Sometimes lets his mask slip and does some slight sperging about "muh cultural appropriation"(he is Canadian after all) and I have a feeling he might be a sexpervert, but his videos are good.

Just2Good
Just2Good makes videos on both old and new sets. His videos are okay, but some have begun speculating that he's about to troon out because of wearing ugly black nail polish, so that's something to keep your eye on.

TrikBrix
By far the best Lego YouTuber is TrikBrix. He only talked about old Lego sets, presented them in a really interesting way, and made them both informative and entertaining. No bullshit, no politisperging, just old school Lego goodness. I say all that in past-tense because TrikBrix hasn't made a new video since 2019. It's been speculated that he was kidnapped and killed by the Brickster on Lego Island. RIP Jamie.

Steely Dan's favorite sets

As I mentioned at the top of this post, I like the old stuff. I'm currently adding to my Pirates collection, specifically buying sets from the original 1989 wave, but along with Pirates, some of my favorite subthemes are Paradisa, UFO, Insectoids, Rock Raiders, Western, and Exploriens. Here's a small list of my favorite sets that I own:

6057 - Sea Serpent
6057-1.jpg

A classic castle set, and I believe the largest Castle boat set. Includes plenty of minifigs from the Black Knights and Black Falcons factions to play out plenty of seaside battles.

6958 - Android Base
6958-1.jpg
One of the bigger sets from the Exploriens subtheme of Space, this set shows some of the best of 90s lego with some gigantic translucent blue windows as well as side builds for the Exploriens to find and discover the secrets of the galaxy.

6278 - Enchanted Island
6278-1.jpg
One of my all-time favorite sets, and one of the best ones of the Pirates theme, showing a ton of color and use of the awesome raised baseplates that defined 90s Lego, as well showing off the Islanders, some of my favorite minifigs, including King Kahuka.

Conclusion

I love Lego, I bitch about the modern Lego company a lot but at the end of the day collecting and building is fun. Lego is very nostalgic for me and I think that's what a lot of people enjoy about it. So discuss, favorite sets, themes, post MOCs, bitch about other autists in the Lego community, what you've recently bought, bitch about Lego as a whole, and have fun.

if you live near a goodwill auction location, they will let you pickup for free (no shipping)

bonzai

lego for cheap - https://shopgoodwill.com/categories/listing?st=lego filter by a location near you

unfortunately goodwill is too smart now, and so ALL lego donated to them goes to their auction site, but you can still find some good deals at other thrift stores and garbage sales (always ALWAYS ask if you see ANYTHING indicating they have or had Lego, they'll often sell it but not realize you can just sell bags of it).

Lego was a lot cooler when they focus on making original sets based on genres and settings themes rather then on license IP.
I do too, even though some of the later themes don't interest me personally like Space Police III (I do like Atlantis a lot), I'd much rather have original themes over licensed stuff. Licensed sets and themes have their place, and obviously if Lego didn't make them they would've have survived nearly going bankrupt in the 90s, but I think their needs to be a balance. That's why even though themes like Monkie Kid and Dreamzzzz don't interest me either I still hope kids/people like them to show Lego there's still an interest for original themes.

Lego needs to fire the guy in charge of mold procurement, and stop making weird pieces that aren't needed. I mean the ones you can't see under the hood of all the modern sets.

Maybe it's snobbery, but I think that if you can't do it with the parts pre-2010ish, you need to rethink the design.

Yeah, when I was a kid, I liked the fact that you could just use your imagination. Here’s the good guys, here’s the bad guys, the rest is up to you.

Lego Pirates were the shit, I loved those.
