Holy crap, Lego really butchered the Animal Crossing minifigures. Now I'm not very familiar with Animal Crossing, but most of these designs do not look cute to me. Fabuland, this theme's spiritual predecessor, had cuter figures. Sonic has cuter minifigures. The dog girl, the bear, and maybe the deer are okay, but everything else is just too flat with too many eclectic, unrealistically colourful designs. The eyes on most of the minifigures look weird and uncanny too. They're introducing a new piece for the theme (a 2-stud wide brick with a central side stud) as well.

I'll have to wait until the sets get revealed, but so far, this is a theme I'm going to skip unless the set builds are very good or the minifigure designs grow on me. I will say, though -- it would be neat if they released a penguin, a lion, and a hedgehog (I got danglers of those guys from a toy capsule machine back around 2009, so I have nostalgia for them).

I personally think they look fine for what they are, I'm not interested in licensed sets but I'm sure Animal Crossing fans will be okay with them. Interestingly enough, this isn't the first time Lego's done anthropomorphic minifigs. Everyone knows about Chima, but back in the late 70s when the minifigure was still brand new they did a theme called Fabuland. Now Fabuland's a bit before my time (I'm primarily interested in late 80s-1990s Lego) and are kinda on the uncanny valley side of things, but I can admit they have some charm to them and the Animal Crossing figs fall in that same category to me.

Lego is dead to me. What captivated me were their original themes like Bionicle, Lego Racers, Orient Expedition, Mars Mission, and the like. Now it's all Disney licensed themes bar a few themes like Architecture, Speed Champions, and Technic.
I mean you have City too for your " floats on water" boat and fire trucks lol.

But speaking of Technic, one thing that always called to me was the space sets

I'll admit, it's tempting, especially since I have the Lego Ideas Curiosity rover.

City is a nice theme too of the existing Lego original themes. Lately though most of the sets feel uninspired.

I don't fully disagree. Part of that probably is from having to make a fire truck every year. It gets boring. But the other part... I think Lego is very cozy where they are. Bionicle and Exo force only became a thing when they were on the edge of becoming bankrupt. Today they fluctuate between the #1 or #2 largest toy company on earth.

What a comfy thread. I'm tempted to dig out my old sets and and take inventory next time I go visit my hometown. I remember as a kid one Christmas I got that Lego Racing set that lets you build several dozen different vehicles including a forklift, a semi or an F1 car, that shit was amazing.

When Lego is able to make City sets other than the usual fire and police stuff, they can do pretty well. The big, detailed City sets introduced in 2021 are exactly what Lego City should have in my opinion, with smaller sets for stores and other add-ons, similar to the excellent Mega Bloks Streetz theme. For years Friends had been mogging Lego City in actually providing buildings to build a city; now City is finally catching up.

I've heard Lego say they've focused on fire and police every year for City because they provide the most storytelling potential for kids, but kids also want realistic, mundane city buildings. I do think that Lego City needs to ramp up the creativity for their Great Vehicles line; 2020 seems to have been the best Great Vehicles line with the ice cream truck (which is becoming a fixture of Lego City almost every year since then), safari van, mail plane, and street sweeper. There's some Lego City vehicles we sorely need remakes of -- the last mail van was released in 2008. I also wish that they would start remaking the old City subthemes like cargo, harbour, and construction.

I'd actually buy a mail truck. Always liked mail trucks lol. It's small things like that, that really help kids with their creativity, and make their City feel alive, which is the whole point I thought.

The Mario sets encourage a lot of imaginative play.
My kids haven’t enjoyed them much, and disliked the apps based instructions. Some good pieces in there though
I like the dioramas, mainly because I like building more than I like playing. My biggest issue is the price, and the overwhelming emphasis on themed sets. Ideas is a step in the right direction IMO, but they're really milking whatever deal they have with Disney.
Dioramas are fine, I just think there’s too many of them

It’s been very samey for a few years now. I heard they had to adjust timings after saint floyd of the fent happened so they delayed the police offering for a bit. Don’t know if that’s true. They should do more varied buildings than emergency services. Town hall with a nice clock, bus station, library, play park with a little pavilion, a market, a school and shops would be good.
It’s been good to see some of the city sets come with a bit of roadway recently too.

The 2024 leaks have begun!

I like this set; I think its side build with a closure rail and cool screen is excellent, and I also like the use of the Nexo shield on Shadow's bike.

I like that the 2024 Ninjago costumes seem to have armoured parts to them.

This is a slightly weaker wave than 2023, which had three classic minifigures and a good representation of space minifigures. This wave has zero space or futuristic minifigures, which is disappointing. Additionally, these are going to be in blind boxes rather than blind bags. However, Basil the Bat Lord looks excellent; I'll definitely try to get him for my classic minifigures collection. The train autist, amputee runner, and goatherd all have pretty neat pieces. The dog groomer, triceratops person, and mushroom girl also look like fun figures, but aside from that, everything else is a pretty weak pull (though the detective holding a red fish is amusing).

I like the Fright Knights CMF, but that's probably the only one I would get.

Apparently the Tahu and Takua special edition Bionicle set can now be purchased individually on Amazon. Before the only way to acquire it was by purchasing over $100 worth of product from Lego directly.

I've seen it, really thinking about getting it. Damn it Lego, playing on my Nostalga. Makes me want to play MNOG again, since it can run on a potato

Am I the only one that really dislikes these nostalgia-bait GWPs? I think they're fine if you buy a shitton of Lego online from their website and meet the threshold, but the Blacktron Cruiser one felt really lazy, uninspired and just a cash grab since only specific sets could go towards that GWP. I really think the brick-built Tahu looks ugly, the bluish gray mixel pieces stick out like a sore thumb and it feels kind of insulting to me as someone who was a huge fan of 2001-2002 Bionicle. Right now on Bricklink you can get the actual Tahu set for 20 bucks, probably even cheaper on eBay. If you've got Bionicle nostalgia just get that instead.

When the Tahu and Takua set first came out, I felt the same way. I thought it was an insult to the og Bionicle fans by putting the set behind a paywall. If they had released it as an individual set and sold it as is, many people would have still bought it. The construction is bland but I guess Lego didn't want to invest in new molds for a one off set.

Bricklink, the largest Lego aftermarket marketplace (think ebay but solely for Lego ) has been "hacked" and is currently down for maintenance, going on 12 hours now. There have been 5-6 storefronts and a large chunk dozens of buyer accounts that the hackers have gotten access to. A hacked buyer account made a forum post claiming that BrickLink had 30 minutes to pay EUR 50,000 to a bitcoin account or they would start deleting inventories from big stores.

I hope for rapid discovery and disclosure of what resources the hackers got ahold of; I had an account I used to liquidate my LEGO collection years ago, but it and the PayPal account I'd used with it are both deactivated and deleted, respectively. Still, I'm unsure of what now-compromised traces may remain that could bite me in the ass down the line.

Yup, I'm an active seller and buyer on BrickLink, it's one of the best ways to have the hobby "pay for itself" so to speak is selling stuff, so I'm hoping for 100% transparency on what happened. It sucks, but it's the risk of any sort of online commerce is there's people looking to exploit potential vulnerabilities.
