I thought it was him until the second part of the story. Now I don't know. If it is him, my guess is that he realized how bad he was starting to look and thought the second part would throw such a big wrench into it that he could simply leave and get away clean in the confusion.

Following Rules 1 and 2 could also lead me to believe that it was a bunch of dudes having sex for hours with Leonard Shaner. It's equally plausible since this this is second hand information.
