Let's Sperg Let's Play XCOM UFO Defense (Completed) - Heavy casualties expected.

Huh, survived long enough to get a promotion. That's a surprise.

Leaving the Ethereal mission was definitely the right choice; trying to play that one through without power armor/psionics/plasma would've just been a squadwipe. Pretty surprised that the game threw them at you so early, but XCOM does like to make things brutally difficult on occasion. I don't remember the exact mechanics, but with all of the supply ships you're targeting I'd expect a Retaliation mission rather soon. Since those bases are still around you're probably going to start losing countries next month.

As for TFTD, forget it; it's literally just a reskin and rebalance of UFO Defense that was made stupid hard because the original version of UFO Defense was supposedly bugged and reset all difficulties to the easiest on saving/loading so nobody actually played UFO Superhuman unless you completed the game in one sitting. The stupid big maps, the two part missions, weapons/equipment not working above water, LOBSTERMEN, Cruise ship missions...nah. Just don't. There's no reason to play it other than to suffer for our amusement, which admittedly you are doing with UFO Defense except you're getting some enjoyment out of it.

I may do a Terror From the Deep Special where I just use the New Battle mechanic to go through each of the missions with the best weapons and armor, just to show everyone how awful the whole thing is. Even that fills me with dread though, the Alien Colony missions are really that horrible.

There are numerous other things I would rather do first than TFTD. Including smashing my hand with a hammer.

I only beat Terror From the Deep once and I did that by essentially speedrunning the game and fudging all of the annoying two-parter missions. The worst part about that game isn't even the difficulty or the monsters it throws at you, its how fucking long the missions go on and on for.

Great example: Alien Colony missions are just flat out designed to frustrate you by placing access lifts and holes in the ceiling all over the place. Not only does this defy all rational design laws, it also means that short of just keeping soldiers in every single room, you can't effectively sweep the base. Most of those missions involve just sitting around and waiting for the enemy to step out of cover. At which point there's an easy 50/50 chance you'll lose at least one soldier, when you probably already lost a bunch of people in the previous half of the mission. Rinse and repeat. I'd much rather do XPiratez or attempt The XCOM Files mostly blind.

XPiratez is guilty of the same map design in some circumstances

But usually it will give you a clear indicator of when that kind of mission is coming. I dunno about XCOM Files though, that mod does seem to be a bit less sadistic most of the time.

I've also toyed with the idea of maybe doing the original Laser Squad but I'm not sure yet how well that emulates. I'm not even sure you can rename soldiers actually.
Oh that's fair enough. I was mostly suggesting it because watching OP suffer is always funny as it is canonically a sequel.

An X-Piratez playthrough would be lulzy. XCOM Files sounds interesting too. Thoughts on the other X-Com successors? nuCOM EW/2, Xenonauts and the disappointing Phoenix Point?

Even the "best" weapons and armor are just worse version of what you get in UFO Defense, and the aliens get better armor/health/other stats to make it more of a slog. I don't think I can be convinced otherwise that the only proper way to do a Colony mission is to fight your way through the first stage (or just dash for the elevator if you're lucky) then just DPL your way to the shiny thing on your first turn and immediately fuck off (since it still animates in the darkness and you can DPL it even if you can't actually see it).

TFTD is fun as long as you only fight regular UFOs, since the underwater scenery is really calming to me. The game turns to shit once you do anything else, where all the new changes go against what worked in ufo defense since the terror maps are fixed, and most of the terrain is indestructible.

3 missions doing nothing noteworthy, including 1 just hiding in the back of the Skyranger while the rest of the squad got blown up. Clearly earned the rank of Captain. Follow me, I know what I'm doing!
Unlike other recruits who got blown up, you know not to be blown up.

:story:If that not captain material I don't know what is.
