Let's Players originating from Something Awful - ft. VoidBurger, General Ironicus, Bob Kamoc

I remember reading a post while back on Something Awful from a female let's player who claimed to haven gotten a bitchy pm from voidburger for no reason other than stepping on her turf. This is apparently this is a habit of her's. Don't know if it's true or not.

First time I've heard of voidburger, she's a cunt, and wouldn't surprised me if she saw other women as competition for male attention.

@proteus4994 Did you ever have any contact with the Men Drinking Coffee? They are some cool dudes

Other than watching their LPs, not really. They mostly seemed drama-free when they posted. iirc judge reinhold was one of the more helpful Sandcastle posters.

Yeah, I've heard the same thing. I know at least one female LPer that Voidburger hated and she had no idea why.

I mean, she knew why. We all knew why. But there was no legitimate reason for it.

Edit: I'm not sure if anyone here remembers Blister, but Blister was one of the most good-natured dudes I've ever met. He was continually high on pain pills which probably helped, but still. He was big and dumb and friendly, like an LP Lennie. Even he couldn't stand Voidburger.

Well shit, I never expected to create a Kiwi Farms account because I just lurk here, but then again I also didn't know this thread existed. It's like you guys made a thread specifically for me to show off my powerlevel.

Anyway, I haven't followed this shit in about 5-6 years but if you guys have any questions about these jokers from 2007-2010, I'll answer what I can. I spent a LOT of time in the LP forum talking to these people.

Edit: I don't remember people like slowbeef and Psych being that extreme, but apparently all of these people jumped off the rails around the time of Gamergate, which is when I kinda drifted away from talking to the LP forum because I, to a small degree, supported Gamergate (or at least the "make game journalism not complete fucking garbage" part of it) and that was anathema to the Marxist crowd.

Voidburger, on the other hand, has always been awful since literally day one on the LP forum

Do you ever keep in touch with Dave_O? Has PsychedelicEyeball always been an ass?

I still find you tooling on Billy_MC and Cornshaq to be hilarious but do you ever watch those old videos and cringe?

Haha, people always conflate me and Dave_O, but in reality, Dave_O and I never really talked much. I mean, I knew him a little, he's a cool guy, but we didn't really know each other well.

Psych is a different case, I've known him for years. He does the overly dramatic yelling thing for his videos but he always seemed pretty laid back irl. I've seen the Twitter stuff you guys have posted and, while I can definitely see him saying that, it surprises me a little. He sent me a message about some anti-PC thing I posted on Twitter a while back but he didn't seem mad about it or anything. So I'd say no, he hasn't always been an ass, but I'm probably biased.

I don't go back and watch the old RPs. I used to read some of the Youtube comments but some of them got really creepy and sexual which is a "Dear Penthouse, I never thought this would happen to me" letter that I really never wanted to write. I'm not sure if I'd necessarily cringe over them because I don't really regret much that I've done, even the dumb and/or offensive stuff, but it's not something I've really had much desire to revisit. It's fun to chat about the old days (because I'm old and this is what old people do), but that's about it.

So here's some other LP drama shit that seemed to have fallen off the map. Did anything else ever happen to ritcheyz? Most of all I remember from that, is he did some type of Dark Souls LP, was popular on the forums, then tried to guilt trip/harassed some female LPer on the forums saying she was the reason for his depression and why he wanted to kill himself because she wouldn't play a game with him or something.

Some people called him out on his shit, others said "well what happens off the forums should stay there, and shouldn't be discussed of called out in his LP thread", regardless of how big of a shitbag he's was being to her on twitter and such. Then slowbeef called the police because he threatened to kill himself a few times on stream or something.

I think he fell off the map there, just curious if there's anymore to that story or if it died.

I would like to say one thing - the ritcheyz story got transmogrified a bit.

First up, the dude had a substance abuse problem and self-destructed very publicly on Twitter. Someone brought it up in his Dark Souls LP thread and someone else suggested that perhaps a Dark Souls Let's Play thread wasn't the best venue for discussing someone's personal problems.

Someone decided a funnier headline was "LP goons care more about Let's Play than people" (i.e. like people cared more about the playthrough than the person) and that became the story.

Then when he very publicly burned his bridges with two goons (one male, one overseas and female - and I mean burned, like immolated himself on top of the bridge) in order to make him look worse, people removed the male from the story and talked about how he was "trying to manipulate a goonnette" (like implying it was a sex thing)

I'm not great friends with ritcheyz - I did a video with him and got involved when it looked like he'd done something serious. He's a dude who had some serious issues, did bad things in the middle of it, went to rehab, is trying to make things better and that's where it is now.

If you don't like him or think he's shitty, I won't tell you you're wrong. And manipulative is certainly a charge I'm not going to deny here - it just irks me that on top of the stuff he actually did do, other made up stuff got into the mix.

anyone know if pokecapn and his crew have been up to anything lately? always liked their videos
The last thing I know they were doing was a LP of Lighting Returns, but they quit a few hours in because they found the game incredibly boring.

I do miss very early LP stuff from SA as that could sometimes be some really great stuff (also man Proteus did the awesome Daikatana LP too)

ResearchIndicates Jurassic Park Trespassers LP probably rates top for me, he did a ton of research into the game, has almost the perfect drawl and accent for it, and mentions important info at mostly the right times.

Of the current SA LPers I think only one I still like is The Dark ID - he's always hilarious and his coverage of Cavia games + Nier is the best (I wonder if he'll still do Automatia).

IIRC she was white noise as fuck in Games at first and then tried to become a YCS poster before someone kept spamming all her posts with reviews of really shitty shovelware games as a gimmick. When she asked why the dude replied "Shovelware for shovelface" and she left for good

Holy fuck that's hilarious. You have any idea who did that? They deserve a fuckin' medal.

I feel like these two things contradict each other.

It wasn't an angry Twitter message, more of just like a "Hey, why'd you say X?" We had a small discussion and it was over. I didn't sense any anger, but hell, maybe Psych has been pissed all this time and I've just never been able to tell.

That Trespasser LP is one of the best things SA ever put out, straight up. Amazing LP, interesting, great editing, etc. RI is a really interesting guy. Every few years him and his friends backpack from the mountains east of Sacramento down to Big Bear. He's basically The Man You Wish Your Man Could Smell Like.

I actually had no idea TDI was still doing LPs, but good for him, he was always one of the better LPers.

@proteus4994 About a year or so ago Diabetus completely purged his SA account and he deleted his askfm (and possibly other accounts as well), my theory as to why he did this is that he was seeing the "call-out culture" craze taking root in the LP community and he didn't want to be lynched for something he said in the past.

You said that you haven't talked to him in years, but I was wondering whether you could speculate about this (maybe he mentioned something about being careful of what he was saying back when you still were in contact with him)?

I would believe this. So here's the deal. When Diabetus, slowbeef, and I would do RPs, Diabetus was just graduating from college and starting on his first real job. Right before I faded away and stopped doing them, Diabetus had gotten a serious girlfriend too. As the years went on, I'd guess that he probably got promoted at work, considered starting a family, etc etc etc. I can't blame him for wanting to delete the Internet history of him making inappropriate jokes or whatever under the fear of some douchebag deciding to call his boss and fuck up his entire life.

Back when we were doing the videos, he was never really careful about what he said. None of us were. We weren't really thinking about what would happen in six years if some psycho decided to send the videos to our boss/kids because that shit didn't happen back then. I mean, hell, I made a bunch of jokes that I'd hate to try to explain to my kid. But no, it's not a thing we were thinking about back then.

But all things considered, I can absolutely believe that this is the reason he deleted his Internet history.

Important part highlighted to show what a sad state we're in today.

Nah, I would say that shit did happen back then, it's just that SA guys were on the whole, the guys who were making fun of the type of people who would send in your internet history to your boss. They were the dudes who would call you a faggot and if you started to cry, would rub your face in it. Rather than now where if you are a fag, and start to cry, not only are you a protected class, but youre being traumatized and abused and need immediate attention and repercussion or whatever.

SA LP's started out with having people like Taxidermist Paste and Vollipop Mambo who were just completely ridiculous; I mean those dudes were the original LP superstars and Taxi's videos were just him screaming "NIGGER NIG NOG NIGGER DICKS" over a video of him playing cat mario, or Mega Man X. A lot of that shit went down when Google Video went down, though. But it really was a whole different beast before youtube went up. It's kind of why SA had that whole elitism thing, they wouldnt even use youtube because at the time, apparently it was lower in terms of video quality compared to everything else.

It's weird to conceptualize that youtube only really gained prominence since about 2008-2009 when Google bought it out. Because of how ubiquitous it is, it seems like it's been around a lot longer. There are a few, very scattered, older videos of old "LP superstars" from before 2010, but theyre actually not as funny as I remember. I mean like, a 2 or 3 hour stream of Clownberth playing Peggle, and trying to act like he's rolling with the punches while his guests make fun of him. That was honestly what LPing was about, but, it's still kinda dumb now that Im not literally a teenager anymore.

This was actually my favorite era of the LP forum, before it got "serious". There was a lot of circlejerking back then, as shown by the Clownbirth video. It was fun to do, I can't say anything about whether it was fun to watch or not. Probably not.

Slowbeef would just get bored and call everyone on his Skype list and then the 8-12 people who would pick up would circlejerk and make fun of LPers for a few hours. It was immature as fuck, but it was also sorta fun. Then slowbeef became mod and realized that sort of thing would be unseemly. If there were any more gigantic LP forum Skype calls by other people, I wasn't invited.

The best products from that era of the LP forum are one-shot videos that people made to make fun of other people. Unfortunately, none of those were archived, although you can probably find a bunch of them in old Sandcastle threads if you were so inclined to dig through those threads (probably not worth it).

See, that's the thing right there. It was just a bunch of guys and gals poking fun at people that took themselves way too fucking seriously. I mean, the early RP's were hilarious...not so much for the videos themselves, albeit some were pretty good, but for the reaction that they got. Remember soda can review guy? Viper123454321whatever? These 5-10 minute long video rants calling you asshats and shit. That was the gold part.

Now there's nothing. Hell, if an RP video were made like that on SA LP today, you'd be run off, and shamed as a bigot/racist/elitist asshole. Instead of just taking it for what it was. Assholes poking fun of other assholes that turned out to be pretty funny.
