I could tell you a story of diversity hires and nepotism fucking Linus in the ass, about a man who doesn't practice what he preaches. That's a story hubris and while that narrative might sound good it's probably not all that true. Here's the truth, there's no such thing as an infallible system and even if one did exist, people aren't. All it takes is one person to make the right mistake at the wrong time and it's game over. It's made worse by work from home and the fact that all these companies rely on outside software and systems.

Just because someone plays around with gadgets does not make them tech savvy. Being able to build a computer doesn’t automatically correlate to having even rudimentary security knowledge. Hell, many gifted and talented developers out there absolutely suck at employing best practices and securing their code, and that’s why application security teams exist.

What’s most fun about this situation is how this will impact Linus’ inflated ego. People will questions him about it, and he will become frustrated and try to deflect blame. I’m sure Steve from Gamer’s Nexus is smiling at this news, I just hope he and his crew don’t also fall victim to these spray and pray malware spam campaigns, especially since he has made multiple videos about the scammers in the GN comment sections.

Obligatory don’t click any links you receive in emails. Don’t download and run files, even if you know the sender. Even if you do know the sender, take the additional five minutes to cover your ass to text message this person to ask them if they’ve sent you some shit. Be mindful of typing patterns. Some scammers get away with some of the worst impersonation attempts ever because people only check for names. If someone is generally eloquently spoken, and then suddenly starts capitalizing random letters, calling people Sirs and asking them to do the needful, something is awry.
