People need to stop whining about 3.5mm plugs.
I don't use them personally, but I still prefer phones that have them. Having a backup AUX connector is a GOOD THING and it's so insanely cheap it's stupid to remove. It's also an analogue in, which is how the very first phone credit card readers got their start.

I miss microSD card slots more than the 3.5mm jack but getting rid of the 3.5mm jack was still dumb as hell
I don't buy phones that don't have a microSD card slot. I've got well over half a TB of music and I want it all on my phone, accessible if I'm driving through the middle of nowhere.

Sony phones are officially supported by LineageOS and have micro SD slots. Even their newer models still have headphone jacks. They also don't require any Google service bullshit in order to use their stock camera and video apps. I'm sure there are other decent phones out there. The sdcard is essential.

People need to stop whining about 3.5mm plugs. They’re long gone and in real life nobody misses them, earbuds with ANC aren’t expensive and give a much better experience.
they actually need to stop complaining because most phones had shitty DACs.

with usb-c in everything, you can use a DAC that doesn't suck. you can get chifi usb-c DACs that rape most builtin DACs on devices of every scope to this day. phone, steam deck, laptop, all bow before the chifi DAC.

How about giving customers the choice?
"we gave you a shitty built-in dac, but you can buy a better one if you want"
How fucking hard is it?

Edit: typos

Only a retard would add the shitty DAC to the bill of goods when you can just tell people "Want an antiquated port? Buy a $10 dongle, a $300 DAC, or just fuck off" and keep that $2 in the margin instead of appeasing all the whiners.

If you sell the dongle yourself, that's more profit, too.

Phones get thinner yet they get bigger in dimensions defeating the purpose. Just let me have the iphone 6 with the power of today and it's fine, better than what they sell now.
Phones get thinner, and then Samsung puts a hole with a pen in it, but still keeps the audio jack out. That's Apple levels of autism.
And are phones really still getting thinner? They are just the same now. Every small effort for a different kind of camera went in vain. Turning ones, expanding ones, behind the screen... Folding screens are also in a stale state now, all the bad reviews are "one day it broke, warranty doesn't cover it"....

I think people like LTT and black LTT (Marques Brownguy) push the removal of stuff from phones to the dumb masses. If something is newer, thinner, shinier, bold and courageous, it's automatically better in their eyes. Keeping a phone or computer for more than a few months is alien to them. They don't worry about battery capacity getting worse in their earpods, since they get newest one all the time. They don't care about loosing the SD card, since they never keep the phone long enough to fill up the storage and are never in a place where they might not have perfect 5G or Wi-Fi to stream their media.

side note, I found a comment on an random video calling out LTT for his ad shilling.

This always pisses me off whenever i read news about phones. A lot of that stuff is just leaks and confirmations of renders and fucking color options. And if you make the mistake of looking at comments, you'll just see incessant bitching about how <company name> uses the same design N years in a row, boooring, can you please come up with something new??? Even the articles themselves are guilty of this shit sometimes.

i mostly agree, i was one of the last holdouts on wireless and the sound quality is good enough overall, and thats coming from a guy with multiple $200+ 3.5mm studio quality headphones. the biggest problem especially for phones and laptops is that the plugs themselves get dust and other shit in them over years of use so unless you clean those out effectively you're fucked plus the cables with always degrade super quick so at minimum you're dropping $50 on replacement cables once a year.

people need to be reminded its not 2015 when those things were semi-rare and expensive and battery life was shit. even the dollar store sells wireless earbuds now.
Sony phones
>decent phones

>sony

Sony basically realized there were a shit ton of autistics and decided to milk them hard. its a $2015 phone with the same capabilities as a $199 one, but with a headphone jack and microSD reader.

Man, I didn't expect my simple tribute to Gordon to cause such an uproar and deviation of the thread.
Here it comes my sperging:

DAC
  • DACs are not as important as thought. Headphones/Speakers and audio data are way more important. I say this as someone who owns an LG V20, LG V60. They sound marginally better than my cheap sound card from laptop.
  • The biggest advantage of their DACs is that it can drive more power for more demanding headphones with high impedance. In rest, I am content with using the laptop 3.5mm port.
Sure an old Realtek AC97 ALC chip is shitty by current standards, but most of the phones use the SoC internal DAC which is fine for most purposes.
That's why my next phone will be a Sony Xperia if they keep the SD card and headphone jack. Internal DAC is good enough for my ears.

Bluetooth/Wireless
  • Bluetooth has its downsides too, it is lossy, compressed compared to wired.
  • Bluetooth has a noticeable delay, so it is not ideal to use when you play a game.
  • Wireless headphones are most of the time more expensive than the wired counterparts. At $100-$200 you will get a superior wired Headphone/IEM compared to Airpods/Samsung Earbuds.
  • They are way less reliable than wired devices because they need Bluetooth circuitry and batteries that are harder to replace. Hell, there were cases when Sony, Samsung earbuds exploded. I don't know of any Apple wireless device to explode though.
  • Bluetooth is occasionally a bitch to set up, negotiations fail or it takes longer that expected. You need more clicks, taps to match Bluetooth, than to simply plug the jack.
Still, I use Bluetooth on my external speaker (Harman Go + Play 3) and I am pleased with it, but you can't say Bluetooth is superior to wired.
Both serve a certain purpose. Wired is the simplest solution.

Dongle
  • Dongles are inconvenient to use. Have you ever tried to use them while jogging? What about when you are low on battery. It is because USB C, for a good reason made the female port resistant to bending when the connector is at a certain angle, under pressure. Good for the reliability, bad for tightening the connector.
  • I know people will say how many people listen to music while charging. My answer would be a significant amount of people. Most people during my long train trip use either wired to headphone jack or wireless earbuds because they need to charge it.
  • If you feel that DACs are so shitty, well why didn't phone manufacturers include 2 USB C ports on the phone to use one for charging and one for other devices. Surely it isn't because phone companies are greedy and want to nickel and dime customers and lock them into their ecosystem of gadgets. Surely it isn't an afterthought and Apple designers are comfortable using a dongle tied to the phone all the time and interrupting it when you need to charge the phone.
Conclusion
I accept both wireless and wired have their place. I personally prefer to use 90% of the time wired. Wired DACs are superior, but the way phones are designed, make it more inconvenient to use wired headphones, and push you to buy wireless. Also add that Apple, Samsung use proprietary Bluetooth codecs/protocols to send higher quality audio and lower latency. Using 3rd party devices will offer less features.
It is clear to me that the phone companies are lowest scum of the earth. FUCK APPLE and SAMSUNG.

SHUT UP NIGGER

you've just never owned earbuds sensitive enough to hear the noise. i'm not even talking about "audio quality", whatever you want that to mean. i'm only talking about the noise floor when I say builtin dacs are almost globally shitty.

my lg v20 has the lowest noise floor out of any device I own.

playing games on phones is for NIGGERS. anyone claiming that they can hear the difference in bluetooth compression on modern codecs is a lying audiophile BULLSHITTER.

you can GET a splitter cable to charge and use audio at the same time.

disregard brand and acquire CHIFI. LDAC bluetooth lanyards with generic plugs are $20. pair with your favorite chinkshit 'buds.

I agree that playing games on phone is awful, but I meant that wireless is not good for latency. Even stuff like YouTube videos could have audio delay of tens of ms. Wired has none.

I didnt claim I can notice modern Bluetooth from wired. But you cant claim Bluetooth has better audio qualities than wired.
And I am far from being an Audiocuck.
Wired Analog has no compression, but it is more susceptible from noise.
Wired Digital (SPDIF, etc) is the best audio quality wise and most hassle free to set up
Wireless doesn't have noise issue, but it is lossy and compressed. Yes, with modern codecs it is transparent, like opus audio is transparent. But theoreticaly Bluetooth is inferior theoretically to wired in this context.

Not all people have the privilege to have phones with bluetooth codes, bluetooth 5.0, etc. A lot of people still use 4.2 bluetooth speakers, headphones. Those sound shittier than a 20 dollar wired IEM or KOSS KSC-75.
Using them wired is better.

Very few people use it, and it is obviously not a great design to use multiple functions on a single USB C port. Indeed, USB C has high bandwidth, but the charging speed will be reduced. Such adapters are probably complex to be able to respect USB standards.
Still doesn't solve the issue that USB C isn't designed to be used as a tightened port while jogging. USB C is meant to be reliable and disconnect the cable before any damage happens.

Where did you get the impression I follow brands. I use devices from different companies. Hell, my IEM is Chinese.

I agree with that. LG did make phones with great sound quality. But it doesn't make a huge difference in listening experience. Especially when you are on a bus, outside. It matters more the headphones you use.

I bought a type-C 3.5mm adapter thingy which can do charging at the same time and it was such an utter heap of shit, completely unusable quality. My phone is ginormous, newer Pixel phones have comically oversized camera bumps so the pretense of thinness has gone out the window. The SoC can produce sound, so why can't they drill a hole in the top and put a port in?

Oh no that's because Google wants to sell useless accessories to niggerfaggots like you. Accessories which are overpriced crap and sometimes so low quality that it is basically e-waste upon arrival.

S/PDIF is actually quite obsolete. The "most superior" audio cables would be HDMI and USB.
But the reality is this stuff doesn't matter. Analog is just fine unless you're doing a very strange setup or your room is exceptionally noisy (electronic noise, that is). As is bluetooth, so long as you use a modern codec like LDAC, aptX, or SDC-XQ (which is not supposed to be very good, but which almost all bluetooth headsets will use at a significantly higher bitrate than the spec technically supports).

compressed audio was solved decades ago with mp3 and AAC at >256kbps

you cannot tell a difference unless you are trained specifically to detect the edge cases and even then it's pretty difficult. try ABX testing yourself.

it's only retards that companies can sell $10000 snake oil to that keep this shit alive otherwise even a $10 DAC/amp can be transparent

The main thing that gets upgraded in phones nowadays is the CPU, companies are always wanting the latest iteration of whatever one they use (Snapdragon, Exynos, A series) because they are chasing the holy grail of less power consumption and better performance. Look at the OnePlus 12 vs Oneplus 13 CPU, the phones are a year apart in terms of release date, the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor in the OP13 is supposed to be 45% faster with expected power efficiency gains of 44% compared to the the AB Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the OP12.

Louis speaks about the honey "situation", basically saying influencers shill shit they have no idea what they are talking about.

Lots of people asked "how would you know honey is a scam?" You don't need to examine browser cookies or click inspect element to do any of this. You only need to do one thing: Ask the person offering you thousands of dollars to promote a browser extension that provides you with free coupon codes how they are making the money to pay you. Anytime somebody offers me something that seems even remotely too good to be true, I ask them how they make their money. If they cannot provide me with a reasonable explanation, I tell them to go away. Nothing is free. And nobody's paying me without benefiting themselves.
