Funny you mention this because there is a market distinction between yaoi, which is marketed for a female audience and mostly created by women, and bara, which is by gay men for gay men. It all branched off from shojo, manga marketed for girls, and it seems to be the result of female manga fans who grew up and entered the industry themselves. This stuff goes back to the 1970's and exploded in the late 80's and early 90's.

Pawoo was originally made as a fediverse extension of Pixiv and had cross site integration, but in recent years it's become basically completely unmoderated and is full of people posting sketchy telegram links.
