I came in expecting old dudes perving on teen girls... I'm baffled.

People chimp out about ageplayers a lot. They worry that the general public thinks lolitas are ageplaying furry fetishists and judges them based on that. In reality most of the public has no clue what either thing is so it's just pointless in-fighting.It's funny because the Lolita community has a serious hatred for girls using it as fetish gear for their "daddies" or whatever - in basically every SP you can find people upset at the perception it's giving the world on Lolita fashion and how it's turning their passion into a kink.

The community is all women and gay men. That's pretty much all you need for drama.
Like being into anime, I don't think being into lolita fashion automatically makes one a weeb - especially since it's based on Western clothing.Wow, I didn't realize it was based on Jap fashion.
See, this is why we need to nuke Japan again. They're exporting this crap in revenge for us winning WW2. They're trying to turn us into a bunch of cat ear wearing, anime watching, weird ass porn watching wimps who dress up in these pervy ass costumes and act like freaks in public.Another fun recent event was the Anime Matsuri disaster. This could honestly be its own thread (albeit a short one)
So for some context, Japan has a program called Kawaii Ambassador. I don't think it's strictly for lolitas, but lolitas usually qualify more than other groups. Basically a really famous lolita model in Japan (Misako) who is like Japan's official spokesperson for this kind of thing appoints certain people in each country to be that country's Kawaii Ambassadors.

It could just as easily be seen as based off of meiji era clothing (itself based off of western clothing), probably moreso than actual victorian fashion
One of my favorite things about nerd hobbies is witnessing the reaction of the fat histrionic alpha nerd girl of the group when an unexpected hotter girl shows up. So much salt crops die for miles.
"She's a stupid vacuous slut who flirts with dumb guys and has diseases! Arghhhh!" --- xXxChocoboSexyKitten1989 (not an actual person)
We're more alike than we'd think.
Mean Girls in Victorian clothing basically (and to some extent the Victorian era lifestyle, which was ridiculously restrictive).
It doesn't surprise me that it is mostly girls who are in their teens and twenties (at least until 25) that say mean shit. I wonder if there are women in their 30s and 40s pulling this bullshit.
As someone who used to indulge in WoW, I can't count all the times girls pulled that crap with me.
There are a lot of horrid secrets bitching out women who wear Lolita past thirty. It's seen as really desperate and pathetic, like someone trying to recapture their youth once it's already gone. Honestly, the thing with the Lolita fandom is that unless you fit this incredibly narrow and subjective definition of what they think the ideal Lolita is (very thin, pale skin, feminine, pretty, young, can afford expensive brand, is very knowledgeable on Lolita fashion, has been in the fandom for an extended period of time, can co-ordinate outfits very well, etc) then you're gonna get the shit ripped out of you.
Honestly, people look at these girls and think of them as naive and weak, but they're more brutal and generally have a much thicker skin than I do, or even most people do. It's a really brutal fandom, so those who can stick it out in public places like BtB and cgl are naturally selected to be generally bitchy - because they have to be, otherwise they would have left a long time ago.
It's hard to fathom why some middle-aged women have to act like immature high schoolers to fit in. It's fine to go out drinking and to party, but it's a different story when you are ragging on younger girls for stupid things.
Honestly, the Lolita community reminds me of some raid teams in WoW I used to be on. If you have the right gear, the right DPS, the right strategy, you will be emotionally fucked.
Several years ago, /cgl/ used to be a female lolcow observation board, with lolcow threads being arguably more active than threads actually about cosplay or EGL. Pixyteri was the favorite topic and was anointed the queen of /cgl/, while a number of PULL lolcows like Venus Angelic and Dakota were also covered. After things went a bit too far with a lolcow called Luvmonkeys, moot shut down the lolcow aspect of the board. Those oldfags have a lot in common with kiwis, though I think the closest comparison I could offer is PULL.They drop the term "lolcow" - the previous poster who talked about the connection with 4chan flowing into the Lolita fandom is correct. We're more alike than we'd think. Lolcowception?
