The long-awaited ban on menthol cigarettes may not be announced by the end of the year, but pushed to 2024, according to officials from two national public health groups working to remove the products from the market.

Both requested anonymity to discuss the decision ahead of any announcement from the Biden administration. The delay could be announced as early as next week, they suggested.

Officials from the public health groups worry that the ban may be punted well into next year, perhaps even after the November presidential election.

One of the officials was “deeply concerned” that the ban would not be put into place before the 2024 election.

“Everything gets harder to do in an election year because people are distracted and bandwidth is stretched,” the official said.

The White House declined to comment.

A ban on menthol cigarettes has been in the works for more than a decade. A 2013 citizen petition prompted the Food and Drug Administration to ban menthol as a flavor in cigarettes, but rules to finalize a ban have been sluggish.

In January, Brian King, the director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, said the agency was committed to completing the rulemaking process for the ban in 2023. The FDA went on to miss its own self-imposed deadline of August.

Menthol use predominantly affects people of color.

Nearly 85% of Black smokers use menthols, compared to 30% of white smokers, according to the FDA. Black men and women are far less likely than white Americans to be diagnosed with lung cancer at an earlier stage, when the disease is often more treatable. Black men have the highest lung cancer death rate in the U.S.

Public health groups such as the American Lung Association and the American Heart Association have been vocal about the need for an end to menthol tobacco products.

“The American Lung Association expects the White House to honor President Biden’s commitment to end cancer as we know it through the Cancer Moonshot,” said Erika Sward, assistant vice president for national advocacy at the American Lung Association. It “cannot be achieved unless the White House finalizes” rules banning menthol products.

“Removing these products from the market is backed by strong scientific evidence and hundreds of thousands of public comments from the public health community nationwide,” said Nancy Brown, chief executive officer for the American Heart Association. “The administration should not delay further in putting these rules into effect.”

On Friday, the Food and Drug Administration said that finalizing rules to ban menthol tobacco products “remains a top priority.”

“Final rules such as these go through an extensive rulemaking process, including agency review and consideration of public comments, development of the final rule, and subsequent review by the Department of Health and Human Services and the White House Office of Management and Budget,” an FDA spokesperson said. The OMB has posted the final rules, which is considered the last step before the bans are finalized.

The Biden administration has been conducting ongoing meetings to discuss the issue with the tobacco industry and public health groups.

Menthol cigarettes are notoriously addictive. When inhaled, the menthol produces a cooling sensation in the throat, reducing the irritation of nicotine and the harsh taste of cigarettes, essentially making the cigarettes easier to smoke.

Menthols are also difficult to quit. Menthol smokers successfully quit at lower rates than nonmenthol smokers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“People are dying. This will save lives. We have the science and data to prove it,” one official said. “It is long past time to take these products off the market.”

People, even those of the Negroid persuasion, should be allowed to smoke cigarettes of their choice. This bullshit of the government telling you what kind of cigarettes you're allowed to smoke needs to end.

I guarantee though that if niggers are not allowed to buy Newports and it's Democrats who did it, you can just welcome Trump back to the White House.
Sadly, if it starts to backfire on them bad enough, they'll just say Trump did it, and the mob will believe them.

They'll believe a Democrat who says he's got three legs before they'll believe a Republican who says the sky is blue.

You may think Demonrats are some kind of weird Jewish wizards, but people will not believe Trump did shit when he isn't even in office. I mean, at least not enough to do anything about it.

There is an above-zero number of people who believe GamerGate retroactively caused the Holocaust.

The lie will be that he did it 8 years ago and it's only NOW coming into effect.

True, the Dems won't be able to point to the specific number of the XO he allegedly signed, or the on-file number of the bill passed (with apparently no Dems voting in favor) that he signed, but it doesn't matter. Nobody will ASK for that proof and if they do? They'll be shouted down as a MAGA chud.

It will be believed because the people being lied to WANT to believe it.

They WANT to believe the party they've sold themselves to for literal generations would NEVER take their smokes for no reason.

Question for Americans more familiar with the details of this proposed ban: In the UK they banned menthol cigarettes a few years ago, but the law was worded in such a way that allowed for a workaround where menthol capsules in the filter can be crushed to "add" the menthol flavour to them. Would this ban allow for that?

This isn't a bill that was written out and being voted on, but something fabricated wholesale by a regulator if/when it happens. Could be that it works out like the UK, could be that nicotine and flavorants of any kind are forever divorced, could be something else completely.

Incorrect. Ban vapes. Require all cigarettes to have robust carbon filters, like they do in Japan. Cancer rates will collapse.

Then require smokers to wear a hermetically sealed smoking suit.
Nah just have separate but equal establishments for people who smoke, maybe give them a black triangle on their shirts so they know which seating area to use at the local pizza place.

Discipline and self control is White Supremacy.
I don't give a single solitary fuck about public health, I just hate the smell of smoke and I hate people blowing vape clouds in my face.
It's kind of insane that it wasnt all that long ago when you could smoke all day indoors while working in a crowded office. Even if you didn't smoke, you second hand smoked a pack and a half every day.

Even when they banned smoking on flights, for awhile, they still allowed smokers to go to the back of the plane and light up on long, international flights. It was considered too cruel to deny smokers for the entirely of a 10 hour flight.

So many people smoked back then that the rules for everyone catered to the smokers. The only place I can think of where smokers still call the shots are casinos. They tried to ban smoking at one point iirc, but it cost them business. Degenerate gamblers are impulsive and have to light up every five minutes. You can't have your bread and butter customers leaving the building every 5 minutes to have a cigarette. That's like 100 dollars a smoke break.

It's literally racist to start moral panics against some specific product because a minority group likes it, and that's seriously what the menthol shit is. It's not even racist in the casual sense the word is thrown around these days, it's literally targeting some specific vice because of the characteristics of the people who like it.

Sort of like Hollywood celebrities getting busted for coke in powdered form got treated with kid gloves, but get caught with a couple rocks and it's enjoy prison time.

They can gussy it up and come up with all kinds of ridiculous bullshit about how menthol is somehow so uniquely terrible it needs to be banned but I'm not buying it.

Banning smoking in prisons is also some genuine bullshit. I know it's not supposed to be fun there but that's just pointlessly spiteful.

And they've already made it illegal to flavor cigarettes with any other type of artificial flavoring because it could potentially target children. Menthol is the only type of flavored cigarette allowed. It's odd how they make these arbitrary distinctions without any real explanation

"All flavored cigarettes are illegal to sell or manufacture... unless it's this one specific flavor cause a lotta people like that one."

And somehow those specific people vote for them.

Couldn’t this technically be considered racist since they’re clearly trying to ban it because a significant amount of menthol smokers are African Americans? Targeting a product because of what a minority indulges in in higher percentages sounds like you’re trying to control what said minority indulges in because it doesn’t align with your beliefs.

They can smoke full flavor reds

The reason they banned smoking in jails for convicts was they didn't want prisoners to use them as part of the economy. The only problem is they just made smokes more expensive for convicts.
But the overall banning of menthols is part of the elites nudge theory. They want to get us to this weird utopia where we all have Google glasses and smoking is banned, red meat consumption is banned or severely restricted and we all have this weird gay utopia thing.
They can't outright ban smoking so they'll ban flavored cigarettes and ban menthols instead.
If they can't outright ban guns then they'll restrict the types of guns you can own.
The purpose of nudge theory is to slowly make the choices so convenient that we simply give our rights. Why would I need to own guns I live in a safe place like Europe.
Why would I hunt for food I can go to the market. It's slow little choices like this that nudges freedoms we fought so hard for away.

Reminds me of how they're raising the age to buy tobacco to 21. That's also super gay. Selective service registration is still in place. They can make you be a bullet catcher for Uncle Sam but you can't smoke a cigarette.

The kids should've rioted.

Since prisoners have access to tablets(that have a store full of pirated games according to some guy on the Final Fantasy subreddit) it also doesn't prevent them from making another economy. Cashapp is used by prisoners to mooch off family members when they can't get money on their books.

I do not know if prison tablets really have pirated Final Fantasy games. Never been to prison and that doesn't sound like a compelling reason to go.
