Look Outside (2025) is an indie horror RPG that's surprisingly not an analogy for depression (although your character can still get depressed). You're an unemployed brown man and there's something outside of your apartment building that's making people transform and/or become insane. You have to survive for fifteen days, so you really could just stay home and play video games all day, only having to go out to find food if you really wanted to. I saw a streamer playing this and decided to give it a shot, it's my favorite game made with RPG Maker by far. There aren't random encounters, there's a finite number of enemies and supplies to find, and it's pretty fun pushing yourself to do one more thing and then die and lose all of your progress because you can only save at home if you're not playing on easy.

So yeah it's fun, go play it. I'm surprised there's not a thread on the game even though it's been out for a year, guess a one-off RPG might not warrant a thread but I was curious if anyone else here played it.

Discuss video game.

It's too amateur for me to enjoy. The tone shifts too far away from horror in the first few days and it has the issue every other RPGmaker game has. Extra attacks and damage over time trivialize every battle.

I thought the game was fucking incredible. I can't stop thinking about it despite finishing it a few days ago. It beats Bloodborne as my favorite Lovecraft game.

This is true and while I wish the tone had stayed consistent with the beginning of the game, ultimately I got really attached to the characters and the message of hope and cooperation and trying to be good in spite of world-ending circumstances. I think most people on the site would find it very gay though.

Is it gay if you can choose to kiss anyone you want (within a set of parameters), it's totally optional and played for laughs? :thonk:
Granted, the author has a Bluesky account so it's a red flag at least.
All the romance in the game I can think of after a lot of bottom shelf vodka:
- Lyle x Sam
- Spine x Sam (unreciprocated)
- Sybil x Jasper (they never meet in game)
- Charan mentions a boyfriend
- Clint x Madison, briefly
- I can't name any other married couples at all

I think you need more vodka then. Or maybe less.

- Lyle x Sam
No romance here. Dude is a stalker, creepy and intentionally so, one step away from taking you as a trophy for his collection (literally).

- Spine x Sam (unreciprocated)
See above, although the woman ruining you immediately is realistic (kek).

- Sybil x Jasper (they never meet in game)
They did before the game started, now they cannot physically meet (literally). It's a hetero romance at least.

Charan mentions a boyfriend
An optional and hard to get encounter, and he's a giant monster ever growing. Not sure romance is a thing anymore, and he might be insane anyway.

Clint x Madison, briefly
...They're a married couple with 2 children, so I would say quite successful considering the game is set in Canada IIRC. Granted, they met a horrible fate, but this is a horror game.

- I can't name any other married couples at all
I think the grandma in the basement mentioned a husband at some point.
Either way, if this game was more "traditional" regarding homo bullshit, you would have a girlboss shoved in your face, and that's not the case.

IMO it feels like the polar opposite of Funger where even if you get all the best shit, you can still realistically get your ass handed to you in either Funger 1 or Termina so the feeling of survival horror is kept, whereas in Look Outside the moment you get Leigh or another companion, the game quickly abandons the "horror" part and becomes another conventional JRPG game like Earthbound.

Not that its a bad thing but I think LO should really not have "survival horror" whatsoever in the genre since its more of a JRPG when you actually get down to it.

Absolutely love the game. Strange how they *lead* with the teeth room. Which was by far the worst. Made me queasy just looking at the sprites. Then later on you are fighting plants and cute critters made of mittens? The psychological horror is still good throughout though. I especially liked all the unique interactions depending on who you befriend and add to your party. They even comment on your video game choices.

Yes, it does have the quirky "The dev played Earthbound as a kid" but I always liked that. The only annoying LGBT content I remember is the camera monster having a stalker crush on you. To be fair that just added to the horror. Especially since your spare key hidden in the hallway plant is gone. Also you can just kill anyone you don't like.

Also appreciated the priest that you can run into. Sure, if you say you are not Christian he blesses you anyways (would prefer if he preached a bit to you and offered baptism since death is imminent. But I'll take what you can get.) Showing a priest helping people spiritually and risking his life to do so surprised me. Especially since you can *tell* the makers of the video game are left-wing.

Also call me what you will, but delivering the laundry was wholesome! And I'm tired of pretending it is not!

Great music too

In the first encounter, If you tell him that you usually visit church, his reputation stat increases by 3 and if its 3 or over his blessing lasts a day longer. If you say you sometimes go or you are a different religion it goes by 2. If you say you are not religious it's 1. Every time he does a blessing the rep goes down by 1.

You gain rep by donating money after the act. If you give him $40, the rep goes by 2, $20 its 1, $10 it's 0 and nothing is -1. Every time he revisits it goes up by 1.

He doesn't come back if his rep is 0 or lower however.
