looking through cat adoption websites makes me so sad.

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
If you happen to adopt a kitten it may be best to adopt another with it; people often run into problems with a cat that bites too hard when they adopt a single kitten because the human is the only source of play when they have. When kittens and other carnivorans play with their siblings, they learn bite inhibition: if they bite their siblings too hard, the sibling will not want to play with them anymore and will try to run away. Since a cat's baby teeth don't really hurt when they try to bite as hard as they can, a human will often not react, and it can be difficult to teach them not to bite too hard.
My roommate got a puppy around the time I got a kitten and I think that actually made the little bastard bite harder because he can bite the dog as hard as he wants. He learned to stop biting hard though cause I started shouting every time he did it until he got the idea.

Yeah, screaming at them is probably the way to go if you want them to stop. Animals tend to learn through simple associations like that (though not exclusively). People that try to punish their pets by bopping them on the nose usually end up making their pets afraid of them, at least in my experience.

Screaming just excites the animal further or confuses them. Cats can learn many of the same commands dog learn. Mine knows leave it, out, stop, and off. Didn't even need treats to do that.

is she on instagram?
Probably, but I wouldn't know. We're not close or anything, it was a post in a pet group on the work's private equivalent of Facebook.

I must be an awful teacher, because after years of trying all I've managed to do is condition my cat to lie down flat before I throw a ball for them.

dont know why black cats arnt as adoptable, ive always loved black cats. my local shelter shows a black cat for adoption and im thinking of getting that one.
It's not super common, but a lot of people will avoid adopting a black cat because of the superstition around them. It's an old-fashioned view, and not as common as it once was, but it's still a thing. A lot of people still see black cats as an omen of bad luck.

That's my understanding, at least. I don't know how true it is or how prevalent this bias really is.

Even worse. People adept to black magic (ie: niggers) tend to hurt the poor things. Like cutting off its paws for whatever niggery rituals. Very common among adepts of african religions. It really pisses me off that people like that exist.

I adopted my cat when i found him in the street, he was itty bitty small and could fit in a cup. Today he's huge. He's not bad luck, in fact me finding him was good luck for him and me. He follows me around everywhere, and enjoy laying like this in the kitchen when i'm cooking.

I have heard the same thing, and apparently it applies to dogs too. I had a friend who was into adopting retired racing dogs and the kennel said they really struggled to get people to take the black ones.

I think it's very silly, I've never seen a cat who wasn't lovely; even those ones with the smooshed faces that look like Wilford Brimley (although I'm not in favor of breeding them as I assume it's cruel like with pug dogs).

also makes me feel so guilty to pick one of these kitties over the rest.

We all just have to do our part, one (or two) cat(s) at a time.

I've always wanted a Dachshund

Just a warning on sausage dogs, you have to be prepared for defiance every step of the way. They have to be the most stubborn, willful little sausage shaped animals on the face of the earth. If you don't mind that, they are great dogs. This is coming from someone who shared a living space with more than one dachshund for more than a decade.

so i went to the local shelter. the black cat i was thinking of had already been adopted. instead they had this very sweet 7 year old female. she was very friendly and was a cuddle bug. she climbed into my lap and was purring and loving the attention. only problem is she has a host of medical issues, and they said there is a good chance she has cancer. she deserves a loving home, but i dont think i could afford the medical bills, especially if she does have cancer. i feel so incredibly bad right now. im feeling so low im on the verge of tears. she is such a sweet cat who deserve a good home, but it looks like she would rack up quite a vet bill and im unsure if i could afford that with my current living expenses.

Aww, poor kitty. Don't feel too bad, I'm sure the shelter will take good care of them. Hopefully someone who's in a better position to support her comes along.

To be honest, I wouldn't adopt a cat with a lot of medical issues, either. I'm sure someone out there could accommodate them, though.

honestly im thinking of doing it. ive looking into my finances and think that if i stretch my budget i can do it. if worse comes to worse i can sell my new car and get a beater, sell my guns, and couch which should altogether net me a few thousand. that plus what is in my savings already should cover most of the bills. she is such a sweet nice cat and ive felt so incredibly guilty over it. i know if i dont adopt her and see that she is still up for adoption or they put her down im never going to feel good about it.

If you end up getting vet bills you can't cover, it might be worth reaching out to shelters and charities that may be able to help. I'm sure there's some charity out there that would be highly sympathetic with your situation. Don't be afraid to ask your vet, too. There's options out there, if you really want to do this.

the cat i was looking at, the one which might have had skin cancer, had been adopted by the time i got to the shelter today. hope she gets a loving home who can support her medical bills. so instead of her i adopted a 3 year old FIV+ male who had been at the shelter the longest of the cats there. he is super friendly and isnt really showing any signs of being sick right now. im going to do my best to give him a good home.

See, trannies. Kiwis aren't so bad. This guy has a cat with full blown AIDS.
