We know that Lucas did not graduate from HS, dropping out sometime his senior year. He remained in his mother's, and is reported to have "burnt bridges" with both sets of parents. This is a poorly understood era of Wernology, but there are tantalizing hints of chaos. He was the first person arrested for driving under the influence of marijuana in Washington. It is rumored that Lucas nearly died from alcohol poisoning, and lost his driver's license over an incident on his first day of work at Subway. He is believed to have been "volatile" and "emotional" during this period.
Lucas left his mother's house in 1998, and lived in his car, which he could not legally drive. Whether he was kicked out, or chose to move out, is not clear to me, but kicked out for failure to follow rules seems most likely. He remained in his car until the dreaded Cyril and Michelle took him in as a roommate sometime in 1998.
Lucas tried his hand at being an adult, but it wasn't fun.
LUCAS WERNER, FAT FAGGOT: I finally got sick of this routine of working crap jobs just to stay alive while Cyril [did the same, and refused to obey me], despite the fact that I was on an emotional roller coaster and the only way to go from there was down. I begged my parents to come back home. Begged.
Lucas's parents took him back. The bridges, as of 1998, weren't fully burnt, it seems. But Lucas did not like living with his parents.
They came and got me...Everything was cool again. Except it wasn't. I was depressed, anxious, still shy around girls because I had never really gotten a chance to meet any or do anything social for that matter. There wasn't any time. I was working all the time and couldn't eat well. My confidence was shot. I was pretty much a robot for the fast food empire. I had zero life....My parents insisted I see a shrink if they were going to continue to allow me to live at home with my erratic, emotional and sometimes violent behavior.
Lucas had his first nervous breakdown in 2000, which lead to his hospitalization and diagnosis. His parents, it seems, cut him greater slack after his diagnosis. He wasn't merely an irresponsible, immature asshole: he was sick! By 2003, he was out of his mom's house again, and in an assisted living facility. He still received some support from his parents as of 2010, and would boast:
My mom has really looked after me since I was diagnosed with bipolar. She likes to set me up and make sure I'm comfortable where ever I'm living.
It is believed that from 2003-2010, Lucas's parents helped him obtain housing on multiple occasions.
After Lucas was kicked out by Suzanne in 2012, he contacted his family in desperation and begged for them to take him in. He offered to enroll in anger management classes, perhaps acknowledging that he had been difficult to live with from 1998-2003. He also claimed that he did not need to take medication and wasn't crazy. Lucas did not receive the aid he asked for. This reveals a major shift in his relationship with his parents, perhaps one that had already occurred. In the past, they were willing to step in and save Lucas from homelessness and disaster. No longer. Now, their response to Lucas being dehydrated and penniless in LA could best be described as a long, demoralized sigh.
Wernologists have discussed the following explanations for Lucas's deteriorating familial relationships:
1) His parents conditioned their aid on Lucas "getting help." Lucas's refusal to continue with medication or therapy lead to their refusal to continue to help him.
2) His parents grew exhausted and threw up their hands. After more than a decade of Lucas continually degenerating, they no longer see anything they can do for him that isn't enabling.
3) Many Wernologists suspect that something creepy went down between Lucas and his nieces. This is purely speculation, fueled by the horrible things he's said about his nieces' diapers and attractiveness over the years. Like: he could've fucked one of them.
4) It's fucking Lucas. Lucas's mother does not support his lovequest, and has told him "its not in the cards." Lucas may be upset at his parents, and punish them with distance. Perhaps Lucas dreams of the day he returns to his parents with a hot, pregnant 18 year old in tow and screams "SEE? PLENTY GOOD! CAN WE LIVE WITH YOU?"
