Many of those homeless people didn't have any of the chances Lucas had. I've seen way too many cases of people who lost a job, lost a relationship, one mistake drinking too much or something, some stretch of bad luck and then they fall between the cracks in getting any help or it takes a couple years to get any and shit gets too deep.

You’re completely right. There’s also cases of single parents leaving their kids in hotel rooms that they were living in for hours at a time unattended while they go to work, and getting arrested. And while obviously it’s wrong to leave your child unattended, the answer in that situation doesn’t feel right to be jail, fines, and child removal. Maybe mandatory parenting classes, and assistance in finding appropriate child care.

The first person Kyle shot, and the one who initiated the chase of Kyle was a convicted pedophile who had already been jailed for anally raping adolescent boys. Only after Kyle shot him twice did the other three jump in.

I guess Marx here is saying it is a common means of exchange that binds us all in modernity but that binding also produces it’s own forms of alienation likely for the peasantry that up until recently in that time relied on the commons for their livelihoods until those lands were bought up and fenced in by wealthy landowners and newly minted industrialists who needed workers for their factories. When you read Charles Dickens you get the sense that both men saw and experienced the same destitution and overcrowding of cities following the enclosures that drove the masses from the countryside into the new industrial proletariat.
