I asked at the time, and the response was that you had to have an ID to drive, and they only sell fuel to licensed drivers and not to people using the gasoline for other purposes.

The US. Don't want to self dox, but even if I did I don't remember where it was because I've done a lot of traveling. Eastern half of the country for sure.

To be fair, those two instances are the only two times anything like that has ever happened to me and it's not like there weren't other gas stations around at the time. I'm just thinking that it could be more common than I know since I rarely use cash.

I use cash all the time because it's cheaper sometimes and all around, never ran into that shit.
Could see it in Britain or some Anglo hellhole because they have all sorts of weird ID to buy shit like eggs, flour, and TP.

In most of Canada they refuse to open the pump unless you pre-pay for it. You can use any currency you want but you have to prepay and then pump. The reason why is because there were laws passed due to drivers running off with gasoline and running over workers trying to stop them.

It's appearance then. I have strong features that make me look more ethnic than I actually am (white/mutt). I get "randomly" searched every time I fly. I didn't know gasoline was used for drugs, so this makes a lot of sense.

US. I've been to many more gas stations that did take cash and didn't ID, those two only happened to me once each. And the ID thing might have been just for me.

Actkually. Most of the older systems no longer work as the cell companies discontinued those bands. Analog for the very oldest ones and 2G for the newer older ones. Some had an option for a new radio module but most are just dead weight. Looks like the only OnStar that still works is some 2014 or newer.

It's still pretty trivial to disconnect the systems in the newer vehicles. The cell modem for mine is now disconnected and the only functional loss was the compass. A little re-jiggering was needed to let the GPS antenna work with the radio so the on-board nav still worked, not that I ever use it.

even as a tech-literate the gps concerns me less than some kind of remote immobilizer. tesla has done that.

We use gasoline specifically because it is so energy dense and doesn't easily go boomboom unless you can aerosolize it to get free oxygen mixing with gasoline vapors. That's why when you see big fire ball explosions in movies, they are using a small plastic explosive to blow a bunch of gasoline into little tiny vapor droplets in the air which then can mix with the oxygen and combust from the initial plastic explosive trigger.

Compare that to hydrogen which is an odorless, colorless gas at sane temperatures and pressure, which loves to mix in with the atmosphere it's around and then detonate at the slightest spark. Or you can compare it to lithium polymer batteries which when shorted (or damaged to the point of creating an internal dead short) will created a class D metal fire that will explode if you try to put it out with water, and requires special fire extinguishers to put out.

The only problem with hydrocarbon fuels is that we usually dig them up. If we produced them on the surface (more expensive) then burning these fuels would have no impact on the environment.

If you put a gallon of gas in a metal bucket and lit it on fire, it won't explode because it requires oxygen to combust, so it can only burn on the surface area touching oxygenated atmosphere.

If you were to rank mobile energy sources by amount of potential energy and safety, gasoline and other hydrocarbon fuels would be leagues ahead of everything else. There is a reason the only thing that has really changed in the last century for gasoline is what antiknocking agents we add to it

Regardless, if someone can refuse to sell me gas without an ID because I look like a tweeker or a terrorist or whatever, someone could refuse to sell Null gas without an ID because he's Null. You avoid that problem with an electric car.

I work with electric cars daily. They suck ass.
You put gas in car it goes.
You try to charge your electric vehicle, it takes 48 hours, IF it works. You might just plug it in and it will just give you the yellow light of "Cannot charge." then you have to pull out each plug and blow in them like an old nintendo cartridge. If that doesn't work you are going to have to get some heavy duty extension cords and try the various outlets in the building to see if it charges. If that doesn't work now you need to borrow a charger from a different car and try that. If that doesn't work you need to repeat the blowing step, then the extension cord step. Try as many combinations of the outlets, cords, and chargers as you like, then if by a miracle one combination works and you leave it overnight, you better check every hour to see if it just suddenly stopped and went back to cannot charge.

With electric you get a pain the butt that can only drive at best 325 miles before it needs to be charged and you are stuck wherever you are for the next two days with a charger that may or may not work and need constant supervision to keep working.
