It's interesting that Communism, like fascism, is supposed to produce an Organic State (wikipedia has deleted the article - it now redirects to Geopolitik). As the Geopolitik article puts it, it is one of the parts of that idea

You can definitely make a case the current Chinese government has moved away from Communist principles but not towards liberal democratic ones. Instead their policy is very much in this vein. An Organic State - i.e. a state as a unified organism where all the individuals are cells - is a vital part of this.

Of course if you've spent any time talking to people from current or former Communist states you find the exact opposite - they're all very conscious that the state is useless, society doesn't exist and if you want to get ahead, you need to do it yourself. And if that means climbing over their countrymen, so be it.

Meanwhile American style liberal democracy is supposed to be individualistic and yet Middle Americans seem to be much more patriotic than people from ex Communist states. Or even from European style social democracies.
