Hate to defend Musk, but him fucking over California with his Hyperloop isn't the worst thing to happen to California in its attempts to build a functional train:

It's amazing how you can spend ten billion dollars on a high speed train system without laying a single mile of track.

There's some context to the highspeed rail and hyperloop fiasco, to my memory the plan got overbudget and delayed repeatedly after being approved by voters in 2008 at specific price-point (after supposedly being planned since 1996 or so), and after years of nothing visibly happening Musk (riding high off contemporary success with Tesla) comes in claims that it will be cheaper and faster to build a gigantic vacuum tube based maglev train design which got surprising traction probably in large part due to public frustration over the speed and rapidly increasing cost of the the HSR project by the time Musk started making noises about hyperloops.

Nobody bothered to fact check if it was even possible, which should be the first thing you do when anyone proposes an above-ground multi-hundred mile long vacuum tube for any purpose in a seismically active area. :story:

He ALSO proposed digging tunnels everywhere under cities in California that he planned to fill with self-driving teslas, which is strictly speaking a different retarded plan than the hyperloop stuff, though it ended up being poorly implemented in Nevada rather than California for a change, proving that people are retarded in Las Vegas as well.
