considering you can find bakshi's statements on his goals with the movie we know his purpose in amplifying the sexual nature of it was to show that animation didn't just have to be for kids. He reduced the animalistic traits that were present in the comic and it was literally to push controversy. as someone else said none of it comes off sexy and if you were to fetishize it you're probably already a sick freak. I don't think Bakshi's work is a stepping stone into the furry fandom.

And compare it to his other works. Any time there's anthropomorphic animals their "animal qualities" are essentially pointless. Coonskin the protagonists are animals, a rabbit, a bear, and a fox. It's to represent their traits: Rabbit is quick to act, clever, and two steps ahead of the people after him. Bear is strong and big. Fox is sly and conniving.

I think trying to write off Bakshi of all people as some sort of demoralization strategy or greater plot to oppress you because he was a Jew born before israel was a thing and he grew up in the shitty parts of Manhattan and DC and had insight into social economic disparity or whatever the meme phrase is pure doomer shit and instead of reading early life wikipedias you should just watch one of his films. if you're really scared about the very idea of black people in a cartoon start with Wizards (1977) (vimeo link). Or if the idea of Nazis being bad guys is still too much Fire and Ice (1983) (odysee) for just a decent animated fantasy film to see how his animation is on another level.

Imagine trying to discourage people from looking into something because of an early life on wikipedia.

But seriously, Peter uses cartoon aesthetics because it's a wholesome Easter movie for kids.
Fritz uses cartoon aesthetics to add to the shock value. It's all portrayed in such a way I can't imagine anybody being aroused by it.

Anyone sexually aroused by it is probably sexually aroused by the image you posted. It's a terrible argument and one that i could only imagine you'd arrive at if you... i dunno... just watch a few clips out of context and assume that there's nothing else to the movie.

Listened to Friday's stream while on a run yesterday. I had to stop because I was laughing so hard at Josh being introduced to Fritz the Cat.
I would recommend watching it, it is pretty good. However, if there is one Ralph Bakshi movie that I would put out for Josh to watch it would be Heavy Traffic. It hits a ton of topic I think he would find amusing, from the Jewish mother to the gross tranny.
Wizards was OK also. I can't say that other movies he made are worth a watch. I didn't dig Coonskin, his version of Lord of the Rings is laughable in comparison to Peter Jackson's, and Cool World was a blatant Rodger Rabbit rip off that had non of the talent of Rodger Rabit behind it.
But Heavy Traffic, Fritz the Cat, and Wizards, all of them are free to watch on YouTube and are highly recommended.

I think the studio stepped in and held him to a dead line for Lord of the Rings and so animation got rushed. They were trying animation techniques that hadn't been tried before. In addition to that Bakshi went in with the plan that there would be a sequel and it was about 10 years before the idea of a sequel was popular and so the studio said "no you're not getting a sequel no one would ever pay for 2 movies." That's why the last like 3 minutes or whatever is just the narrator time skipping. It was supposed to be a half way point.

Cool World had major studio meddling. Bakshi pitched it as a horror movie and instead of letting him do what they wanted the studio said "hey what about that Roger Rabbit movie? Cartoons are supposed to be funny. Make it funny." And then they also refused to let him get the R rating because Paramount is stupid. All the comedy falls extremely flat because it's just randomly tossed in against the wishes of Bakshi and directly goes against the premise he laid out at the beginning.

The twist? Cool World would be for adults. The plot would follow a half-human, half-drawing — the child of a cartoonist and a cartoon named Debbie Dallas — on a journey to kill its father. (After all, if you were the product of an unnatural union, wouldn't you be a little upset? And possibly always in pain?) The selling point seemed to be as much the animation as the project itself. In a recent interview with The Independent, Bakshi said that, though he didn't know how it would've been done, he wanted to make "the kid" itself half-animated. The studio bought the idea, and Cool World was on its way to being born. Unfortunately, the path to realization would not be a straightforward one.

Bakshi's one of those guys you just allow to do what he wants. The only films he really flopped on were ones where someone said no. Wizards could be considered a flop but it was released up against Star Wars in a limited release state and on 2 million still made 9 million. Fun fact when he went to fox to request more money to do battle scenes he was rejected. It was the same day George Lucas got rejected for a budget increase for Star Wars. It was also going to be called Wizard Wars, but George approached him and asked him to drop the Wars part. Also sent him Hamill to audition for a VA role.

I believe I said it already but there is not a single thing in this world that some people won't turn into a fetish and a phobia. It shouldn't influence how the rest of us enjoy it.
