I feel pretty lucky to live in the area I do. A rural community. Lots of choice in terms of locally grown food. I'm even able to get yak meat (occasionally, it's not a huge herd) which is amazing for stews. Once my mother gets the goats going again I'll have consistent milk to make different types of goat cheese. The Mennonites in the area sell an amazing soft cheese packaged in olive oil, Marinated Labneh. Great on crackers or toasted rye with some balsamic. Due to where I live it's made me consider raising a herd of Rhea birds once I get property and selling to some restaurants in the area. The meats great and has a similar taste to beef fat. It's also red as opposed to white in comparison other bird meats. Mushroom hunting is good in the area too. Lobsters, porcini's, morels, corals, puffballs and lions mane. Freinds and I go every season. Huntings good too. Elk, Deer (mule and whitetail) and the occasional moose if you have the tag. Saves on the grocery bill each year.
I'm babbling. But at least in my area its not all cheddar and sadness. I don't yet have the income to eat entirely locally. But I will in the next few years. Can't wait.
