I have watched videos of her performance, because of the media meltdown over it. Otherwise I wouldn't have even noticed that it was Eurovision again.

And I would say people who really, really, really love auto tune and people without eardrums will love her new song and her butchering "Like a prayer". And maybe the super extreme hardcore gay men. Without eardrums.

I think it was Dead Mau5 who called her a fucking idiot for that, and said it was an absolutely pathetic attempt at being relevant in a community where she didn't fit in. And she came up with some lie about how she was referencing a song 'her friend' wrote.
 
Even in a cameraphone picture of a tv, Madonna's shitty surgery is evident. Swathing herself in 20 yards of satin and wearing a eyepatch makes her look even more like a ventriloquist's dummy.

I was listening to some Emmylou Harris songs on youtube this morning, and noticed how good she looks. The woman is a decade older than Madonna, and still manages to look fantastic for her age.

Out of curiosity I watched her recent tour announcement and she sounds like she's slurring, could it be botox freezing her mouth? One of her other videos, the one with the vacuum, is only 144p probably to disguise her ageing face because it's filmed in a candid way.

The whole Madame X thing screams "PLEASE FIND ME SEXY AND RELEVANT", who likes her music in 2019? I watched the most recent videos on her channel out of curiosity and all I saw was a 60-something year old woman trying to shock the masses with her new dominatrix bad bitch persona when Lady Gaga's antiques wore off on everybody 5+ years ago. The music itself is modern but her vocals sound... out of date? Vocals these days are like a) female powerhouse or b) "indie girl voice" and she sounds, well, like Madonna. She sounds like she did ten, twenty years ago but now with a shitload of autotune which I will always assume means she can't sing like she used to.

Her career is a fucking ancient relic to people my age, maybe there's some appeal I don't see, and that's why I don't get it :optimistic:.
 
I kinda am amused by her seeming bewilderment and loss of purpose at 60.

Among all her contemporaries, she was one of the primary proponents of the "be young and live for now" philosophy. Wasn't her whole shtick essentially showing off her toned-but-under-endowed bod for over two decades? That, and being the iconoclast who toppled older, more superior performers and institutions and stodgy social mores?

Time is the ultimate prankster for such people. As is inescapable, she has become precisely what she used to be against. Youthcentric philosophy only works until you are 30 at the latest, unless you are a massively popular pop star, which means you can get away with it until you are in your 40's. If you plan on sticking around in the public eye, then you'd better evolve a deeper, more life-encompassing philosophy or STFU entirely. And since the earliest days, as shrewd a marketer and as dedicated a club music thief as she has always been, she has never been mistaken for "deep".

Her rise, for those too young to remember her, was not universally supported. She had platinum records, but 80% of the buyers were women or gay men. "Like a Prayer" was her apex of universal popularity, and even that was roundly disliked by many (I thought it was pretty good for what it was, but I had no use for her in my rock-centric universe and only liked four or five songs from her whole career). Her appeal was vaguely to do with "female empowerment" and gay-friendliness, her knack for asking her producers what kind of music the kids dance to in the clubs and inserting it into her own music before the general population had heard it (she started falling a little behind the times with "Ray of Light" if not earlier), and the 80's zeitgeist, in which post-Bowie media manipulators were especially admired. Oh, and she was first pop star (alongside Vanilla Ice, no less) to get naked for a garish book of pictures, which raised her profile although some may argue she jumped the shark at that point.

So now she has gone from youthful, empowered exhibitionist to aging, billionaire lolcow. It was always in the cards; it just took so long for her to truly live up to it. I get a certain satisfaction from it, like the world really does work the way I expected it to in this case...

She may go the way of Mae West in her 70's; a grotesque drag-queenish vamp, a parody of her own self.

They aren't different, although Lady GaGa is very indebted to Madonna. Before Madonna, women pop stars were not this way; therein was some of her "originality." Madonna owes a lot to Deborah Harry, but Harry never presented herself as a way of life the way Madonna did. And Harry was more of a musician. I think that she ought not to be touring with Blondie in her 70's, but she still comes across as more dignified than Madonna can hope to achieve at this point.

Not that I really care about any of this, but it is an idle holiday morning...

Yeah this was a weird take. “Her stuff wasn’t liked by most people, just women and guys who bang other guys.” Women outnumber men on this planet, they’re hardly a minority.

It’s as silly as saying, “Yeah ____ sports player is a big star, but he’s hardly universally accepted. 80% of his fans are men.”

Saying “she had platinum numbers BUT most of her fans were women or Not Straight Men” is stupid. Not having the Straight Male Stamp of Approval doesn’t make her platinum hits any less legitimate, any more than a platinum number bolstered by mostly white fans or mostly black fans or whatever.

OTOH you’re spot on, her “YOUTH CULTURE FOREVER” gambit became useless thirty years ago. Never build your career on the idea of being young, because eventually you will not be, no matter how many things you get injected into your face.

Also I always found her far less talented than people raved. She had less substance and more superficial flash much of the time, IMO.
 
I kind of feel bad for her? Like she can't handle aging and being in the spotlight. If I was her I'd retire and stick to choreography or producing music. It's not like she'll ever go bankrupt. She'll have money for the rest of her life.

The anime interlude video from the Drowned World Tour was amazing. I wish she'd do more stuff like that. Instead she's trying to be edgy.

I wasn't delegitimizing her sales figures. I don't deny she was omnipresent in the 80's; it was hard to escape her.

My point was for all the people who admired her and praised her, there was a large amount who couldn't stand her all along. I fall into neither category, but I did find her annoying more than inspirational. My point was that for such a famous and popular figure, she had more detractors than most. A lot of people (not just white men, a lot of black men too and also some women) saw her as shallow, glib, and extremely derivative musically. Perhaps the most apt comparison would be Michael Jackson, whom people generally liked or hated. On the other hand, a figure like Prince, who had comparable sales figures at least some of the time, had more universal acceptance across a wider demographic; there aren't nearly as many Prince haters as there are Madonna or Jackson haters.

Madonna DID court a lot of negativity with her shock antics and, let’s be honest, good-at-best singing skill. She was better at marketing herself than standing behind a microphone.

However people like Beyonce have fan bases that are probably 80% women and gay lads and that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s because all the straight men think she’s a bad singer. It’s just not their thing personally. I think it was your quoting this kind of figure that made me think you were saying she wasn’t as big a star as most because she didn’t garner enough straight male fans.

I think Prince did better because he had mass appeal and didn’t lean too hard into one demographic. It’s also generally harder for female singers overall to garner appeal over both male and female listeners, especially decades ago, the same way women are fine with going to action movies but most men won’t sit through anything advertised as a “chick flick.” Male media is considered the acceptable neutral norm and “women’s media” is assumed to be only for women’s consumption.

Michael Jackson, otoh, was a feckin freakshow all the time and it’s no wonder he unsettled people so much.

Edit: but to be clear I agree with you, I found/find her an annoying tryhard much of the time, even before Mags started becoming Granny Cougar.

Here we see Quavo, whoever that is, seemingly stoned off his head. When asked about what it's like to perform with a legend like Madonna, he remarks that it's pretty cool because his Mom grew up listening to her music. (2:41:14 if timestamp doesn't work).

Emmylou is a great example. She sells out whenever she's in the area. Somebody mentioned Cyndi Lauper in this thread, I caught a moment when she was on TV recently. She's still beautiful and a class act. I was never a fan of Madonna, but it is sad to see how badly she's aged and the damage she's done to her own legacy by her fame whore nature compared to her contemporaries.
