Mafia

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
Though in the end it'll be a formulaic TPS with covershooting and shallow stealth mechanics that's best watched on youtube, or even better; ignored in favor of just watching an actual movie.
I believe Mafia III proved why the Mafia series cannot work as an open world game similar to GTA. It just turns repetitive. Maybe SOME free roam character interactions like The Godfather game adaptation would help flesh out Sicily.

They should just put it in as a separate game mode with silly missions like the original and its remake. I still think Mafia II did it the worst because it seems like they wanted to make it open world but decided halfway through to make it more linear so you get this half-assed bullshit where you can do a lot of side content but you can't save manually so you can lose all your progress if you die before the next checkpoint.

What side content was in Mafia II? All I can think of is bringing cars to the junkyard. OR, if you want to be technical, buying food/drink and clothes in some shops.

Mafia II's DLC was horrible in execution. They went from mission to mission without many cutscenes and decided to make them score-based with a time limit. Joe's Adventures was ruined by that mission method. It made the side story feel disjointed.

Robbing stores, collecting shit, I think Derek has you collect specific cars for him too.

Yeah, I guess it kinda makes sense for the two Jimmy DLCs given that it's trying to mimic a shitty mafia action flick although they're still shit.

Mafia: Lost Heaven was originally going to have the player be a police officer to investigate the mafia. Glad that idea was changed very early.

I can always go back to Mafia III. The DLC content is handled better than the base game's campaign. I just don't feel like backtracking between the same outputs and locations to fish out ONE guy.

You could rob stores.
Irony is that when you're at the endgame and need to get a bunch of money fast, most people do the junkyard when you can also rob stores. But the issue is that for some reason robbing stores can brick your savegame and lock down the main quest. Happened to me once.
Mafia II hurts to play.
It is so obvious that the game was unfinshed and there are so much cut content.
I still like it, but I get so annoyed by all the cut shit.
Did you try out that new Restored Content mod?

The Southern Union Remy Duvall boss battle has to be one of Mafia III's best setpieces yet. Hell, I'd argue one of gaming's best boss battles. It's so cathartically satisfying to ambush a KKK (expy) rally waiting for THEM to hunt YOU down.
The LSD scene was pretty fun too though.

I was just thinking of that one. Tied with the Southern Union boss battle. You go in to SUBDUE to get to Olivia instead of just guns blazing. Nice change of pace. If Mafia III had more varied missions like that, maybe it wouldn't be such a slug to process.

Reason #1285 to never watch Luke Stephens.
The Mafia games are fuckin peak, with the exception of 3 which was eh but Mafia DE and Mafia 2 are cinematic and legendary.
I despise YouTube video essayists.

the shock i got from playing mafia definitive to mafia 2 was stark because i interpreted 2 as less serious about the whole mafia thing
also i didn't like the aiming system or stealth but i thought the driving handled alright
