A Phyrexian is back and this time they are invading a roaring 20's analog called the streets of new capenna.

In all seriousness, I'm digging the underdog Phyrexian idea, but if WotC shits the bed on this Phyrexian buildup they've been doing for the last bunch of sets, like they did with Bolas, I'm gonna have an aneurism.
Oh who am I kidding... of course they will.

yeah I don't even pay attention to the story anymore. Not that it was ever really that good except for the Urza block...Saga, Destiny and Legacy is the only time it felt like it was a true, non-hackneyed/ripped off IP with original characters and art and stuff. Original MTG was heavy high fantasy, Homelands and Legends was kind of boring, Tempest was getting there...but I completely enjoyed the Urza Block story and atmosphere.

Then they started with the goddamn planeswalkers and now it is basically just Marvel except slightly more tolerable for me because I actually enjoy the game itself. I didn't even mind the harry potter set, I can forgive a lot of stuff from Magic but I gotta say the whole superfriends angle is really probably the most unpalatable for me

Every time I hear anything about the story I just think it's more retarded than ever.

The stupidest thing was the powered Planeswalkers down so they could use them as characters, but they've continuously failed to do so and still write them as gods, except for when they are literally too stupid to function. From what I understand Elspeth spends part of her time in New Capanne trying to earn a weapon and being in life threatening situations when she could just planeswalk, get whatever weapon she wants, and kill everyone. It's not like walkers are just that weak, because she does manhandle goons, Obnix just mercs one of the house heads like it was a joke, and Vivien has no problem fucking people up.

At least back in the day when Planeswalkers were actually god levels of power they understood to write them as aloof or if they were involved they had bigger things to deal with than the squabbles of mortals that the story followed. Though even then sometimes someone would figure out how to hurt a planeswalker despite being mortal, simply because they could gather enough information and there would be actual stakes instead of this bullshit where the only reason Elspeth isn't using her powers is just because it would be too easy and there's nothing actually stopping her from doing so.

Honestly are any of you buying Secret Lair for any reason other than acquiring shitter reprints for cards that cost >40$.
I know people doing the above and it kills me.

99% of the time I hate the theme and I hate the art.
Yes.

I typically buy one set every Super Drop. Recently I bought the MSCHF and Saturday Morning D&D sets. I intentionally avoid the "we hired this indie artist I know who's looking for work because his art sucks" sets, and I don't buy non-etched foil.

Sometimes if I can find them. Usually it has to be a theme that I like or the artist. Such as Wayne as I liked his art since his Paizo Dragon Magazine days. My wife has liked more of them though.

To be honest I think I'll buy Magali Villeneuve and Sidharth Chaturvedi. They both remind me of a modern Terese Nielsen and it looks better compared to other Secret Lairs.

It kind of baffles me WotC isn't constantly getting dunked on online over Secret Lair. 30 dollars for F I V E (5) full art basic lands? 40 for pre-damaged basic fulls?!

The Street Fighter one has been the closest to being worth getting, 8 new legendaries with a nice frame on them. The artist spotlight ones would be good if you got a.) more than 4 cards each worth maybe 2 dollars max and b.) Why would you make an "artist spotlight" collection and not give them the extended or full art frame? The art is literally the entire point of buying it. I actually honestly don't know why every card isn't in the extended art frame unless they're super expensive to print for some bizarre reason.

They should just give a secret lair to Yoshitaka Amano and call it done, there's no point continuing the brand after that.
Look at the man's Lilliana from War of the Spark for example.

What was the reasoning for that, if you know? I know the nonsense with Nielsen.,
It was due to a few magic cards back in like 2004. Seems they patched up and she's been working on a few sets and Dungeons and Dragons.

The 2021 Secret Lair Mothers Day has one card that was done by her kid and one by her. So if you ever see any art from Eliette Mitchell, that's her daughter.

How about more Cats for @Cats (The flavor of this card is a bit wonky for the colors though.)

oh dear those are some, uh...interesting cats... :[

Mage's Attendant is okay but the art is disturbing. The catfolk just make me think of furries and that is No Good.

If black market tycoon generated a treasure when it came into play instead of tapping to create one, it would be halfway decent in Naya Winota, helping you drop a third turn Winota and giving you a non-human attacker for a trigger...part of the same reason Ragavan is really great in that deck (though he is good in almost any deck with red mana)

The rest of those cats look like they are really meant for commander which sucks since I don't play commander and I never will.

lol at the electric tommygun. Yeah that's p gay
