I've been getting some MTG videos popping up on my YT recommendations lately and poked my head into this thread.

One thing I used to absolutely love about MTG was the artwork.

Richard Kane Ferguson, Todd Lockwood, Kev Walker, Adrian Smith, Quinton Hoover, Anson Maddocks, Rebecca Guay, Phil Foglio, Harold McNeil. All had distinctive styles that were really imaginative and made the cards feel really different and, dare I say it, diverse.

This stuff posted on this page looks like refried dogshit. I didn't like everything from the artists I mentioned above (the Foglios, in particular, were pretty hit or miss for me) but there was a lot of variety in visual style.

Shame.

Yeah, but I'm saying "hold up 3 mana" is a big enough ask as it is in standard in every deck but control (which is rarely a green deck in standard... or hell even pioneer). Holding up 4 mana it better draw you a card or leave a body behind or something because no one wants to pay 4 mana for a 1 for 1.

I'm basically saying that 3 mana is the current rate for instant removal that hits most everything, last standard we had a 2 mana spell that yeeted all monocolors and it missed almost nothing. People are already not playing Void Rend that kills every non-land and hates on ward because it's too expensive. This is basically a 3 mana scry one draw two to compare it to the sac draw spells.

Tear Asunder is already really good in standard* it doesn't need a buff, Vanishing Verse is heavily meta-game dependent on how good it is and it really wasn't good until after Goldspan got Yeeted and Chariot became the largest threat in the Format. Honestly I don't think Verse would be main deckable ATM because Windgrace

Void Rend doesn't see play because it is WUB costed and the only Esper Deck that exists currently doesn't run ANY non Creatures in the mainboard because Thalia exists and if you are going to spend 4 for Removal anyways Ertai Synergizes with the rest of the Deck better, if there were a Control deck that was Esper focused Void Rend would 100% see play.

3 Mana is the general Current rate for instant removal yes, but with Tear Asunder you are also paying for the ability to change what the target is removing. Just turning Naturalize into a massively better version of Anguished Unmaking/Mythos of Nethroi/Unmake for B would probably end up with a banning because that would be the most powerful removal spell they have printed in standard in recent memory and that is saying something because Removal has been pushed to the god damn moon to the point where Hero's Downfall is no longer good enough for Standard.

*There are a billion Enchantments that you want gone ATM so I think if there weren't a massively better version of it in existence Naturalize would be in Sideboards right now.

seb mckinnon is basically the only one doing any interesting art anymore and i'm honestly surprised they're still letting him keep doing it after he came out backing that canadian trucker thing. it wouldn't be the first time an artist was removed for wrongthink

I mean outland liberator has fallen out of fashion since in reality it costs 3 to zap something and the top green deck is Reanimator so it wants to manage the field till it drops Gix and it is running 4 Tear Asunder, 2 Main deck and 2 Side board, and I was counting Return to Nature as Naturalize just because the exile clause hasn't made it good enough to really be standard playable.

I think tear asunder is exactly where it should be, It's baseline is fairly costed for what it does so it isn't abjectly worse than the cards it is trying to supplant with an effect that means that it won't ever be 100% dead against decks without artifacts and Enchantments like Mono Blue Tempo or the Esper Legendary deck does. I honestly would expect it to replace outland liberator in the modern Yawgmoth* deck too if liberator weren't a legal target for Chord of Calling.

Are you serious? Charging the players 1k for this stuff but find a complete stranger and they get it for free?

Rudy on one of the Yugi-Oh guys that is getting bullied for opening those 250 dollar 30th anniversary packs. People directing their negativity towards people who are effectively randos is stupid of course, but he's right that WotC almost certainly gave him absolutely no indication that he was opening a pack that was so toxic they couldn't possibly trust their own content creators with the free advertising.

I don't think that there could be anyone so out of touch that they think that 250 dollar packs of cards with 1992 western fantasy art will be the entry drug for anyone in the hardcore Yugi-Oh demographic.

Harold McNeil had a very distinct and cool art style that I don't think anyone has really come close to. I'm not even memeing because of the whole Nazi thing, just thought his work looked cool and unique.

Turns out not only did it piss off the MtG players, it fucked over the Yugioh guy who pulled the video down and issued an apology for taking a sponsor he didn't dig into enough before accepting.

Like I said earlier in the thread, if I was creator like Kibler, I would have kept my name as far as possible from this shit, and here we are seeing how it fucked over some rando.

I mean if WotC was smart about this, it would be 1k (maybe) for a complete proxy reprint of Alpha. Maybe less if you want a copy in modern frames. (maybe - maybe some kind of cheaper randomized option if you want to just have the experience of what it was like, $50 a pack at most)

Then as a promotional video, you would get Kibler and maybe some of the other folks who originally played in the first pro tour or world championship or whatever, and do one of those meme "copy photos" where the two pros repeat their game using the 30th anniversary cards.

I honestly wonder if WotC is going to survive this. Maybe I'm too optimistic, but this whole thing feels like the infamous "thermocline of trust" companies can suffer from. Have any of the whales even tried defending this??

You know, there was a very easy way for them to do this and not fuck themselves in very way possible. A while back when Planar Chaos was coming out they did a series of posts on their site exploring alternate timelines including one where they had Magic as a future space game and they even had cards mocked up for it. I can't find it now because they nuked all their old content from back then, but if they just printed Beta with that concept and a back that clearly means it's not actually Magic, they could have charged 10$ or even 15$ a pack, given people a unique experience, and still kept true to the idea of letting people experience Beta in a way. But no, that requires stopping to think for a few seconds.

I do like your idea of having old pros recreate games and stuff, that would be pretty cool as I sometimes will watch ancient tournaments that have been archived from when it was on ESPN 12 or something.

I think WoTC will survive this, but it's really hit their reputation hard as it's not just the 30th thing but all the stuff boiling around it that brought it to as big of a clusterfuck. Now Amazon sells shit for less than distribution prices during their sales dumps, and it's still not selling super quickly. Some shit sold like Set Boxes of New Cappena at 75$ a box, but Draft of Dominaria United sat at 85$, and many places are still dumping Bualder's Gate at 75$. When all your shit crashes and burns like that, people aren't going to want to touch, I mean what business wants to buy a product they know has a high likelihood of just losing you money, and the upside is you make 5$ a box if it doesn't collapse?

Remember for Hasbro wotc carries a lot of baggage and as long as they are making money its ok but being down 100s of millions changes the story.

I would not be surprised if they want to offload them fast. The problem is they need to change the board of directors entirely.

doubt they gonna drop them completely, it's more likely they sell off chunks of old IPs first netrunner *cough*, and if all else fails pull a GW and just outsource the IP to the highest bidder to keep at least the name and passively get fees this way. you'd also have to consider who they could sell it too, hasbro probably wants a nice sum for the whole package, even if there might be companies interest in one or the other, but not all of it.
