I think there's potentially merit in an undraftable set that just removes all the commons. But, it has to be something that has a target audience in mind. Who gets excited about the cards in MAT?
Or you just sell it as a bundle where you get 1 copy of every card in it. If you're set is under 100 different cards, there's no reason to have it be in randomized packs.

If they wanted Aftermath to sell they should have put real cards in the packs, with the exception of Calix and Nissa all the cards are terrible and most of them are clearly ALSO pointed at commander. I guess they really thought Commander players that play at 2-3 power level were going to crack those packs in droves.

Man if only we were getting this universes beyond...

Also played some more of the Dr Who decks this weekend. I cannot believe these were intended to introduce people into the game. I feel like I should be a qualified magic judge after playing those.

Kiwi bros it’s so over and we’re so back. New BnR announcement BTFOs geological appeaser and karn in pioneer, and axes fury and up the beanstalk in modern, while claiming standard is a “health meta game with multiple options for players in each micro-archetype”. Do we think this is a case of a broken clock being right twice a day or is there a resurgence of non-tranny jannies sweeping it up for wotc?

Standard is alright. Extending a year was a mistake, and I'd ban Shelly because too many decks run her with no synergy because she wins games on her own but I'm OK with her existing. At this point I cringe harder when I see Raffine because his card filtering makes games incredibly cringe whenever esper midrange plays on curve.

In gay Arena news for some reason they are adding Historic again to exist beside Historic. The one Historic remains Explorer + Some inserted cards + Rebalanced real cards + Bans + Digital crap while the new one is actually every card on arena with a legacy one-of list for Channel, Demonic Tutor, and Tibalt's Trickery. If they make cringe digital only changes they don't apply to timeless. So that means a lot of legacy level threats like Oko and Uro but really bad interaction like no Force of Will. Probably fucking retarded, but it at least is closer to what Historic was supposed to be instead of the gay bait and switch they did when they started pre-banning power cards. Also they are pre-banning fetches in Historic. I'd guess that literally the second they turn on rankled timeless historic is dead and gone.

I kind of think Standard is going to get worse..not because of the actual cards...but I think the Mana is going to be way too Good for anything that isn't an eternal format.

We have, Triomes, Slow Lands, Man Lands, Pain Lands, Cavern of Souls, I am someone who Advocates for good mana but holy shit by the end of rotation we are going to have 4 or 5 cycles of Dual lands and the 5 Triomes, I kind of think that by rotation we will end up with even more 3+ Color piles.

I want Fucking Blood Moon in standard.

Given all of those easy mana sources, WotC adding Reflecting Pool back to Standard wouldn't even be a surprise at this point.

Sure, I'd like more non-basic land hate. But nearly all the non-basic lands in standard are shit in at least half the decks that could be running them but everyone runs every applicable land anyway. I've lost enough games to drawing tapped lands in the wrong order in Atraxa-style ramps shells that I appreciate how shitty they really are.

Triomes - Necessary for domain but boy does always coming in tapped make them unreliable as shit. I dig the cycling late game though.
Fast lands - Shit in midrange, obviously good in aggro but if you're a control deck and the coming in tapped clause fucks you you're either very unlucky or playing a bad control deck
Painlands - Shit outside aggro, they throw so many games because oops you kept two of them against an aggro deck and you blast yourself for 5 before turn 4
Slowlands - Only really bad in decks that are so aggro they MUST cast something turn 1
Cavern/Other tribal land - Bad unless you are doing some tribal nonsense that usually is dumb in standard or are doing some I must resolve this creature nonsense like in Atraxa decks.
Mirrex - I love this guy as my favorite "threat built into the mana base" land, but he's colorless most of the time, sometimes comes in clutch for fixing in Atraxa decks though.
Sunken Citadel - no reason to be a rare, tapped choose a color fixing in most sets is a common card
Soldier land - It's free in soldiers and no where else.
Manlands - I think they are all kind of piss except Azorious Bird. The non-white AFR lands are all better.
Channel Lands - Good, but most are one of in place of a basic in most decks.

I think that you can look at Historic for this one. Historic has all the shocks, triomes, fast lands, slow lands, checklands, etc. Nearly every good non-degenerate land in the game except the original duals and fetches. Decks are still usually 2 colors sometimes 3. The amount of consistency you loose greeding up your mana base is always still a real cost.

You are looking at this list and complaining..but during the majority of the time in the past decade any single one of those cycles would have been loved. Outside of Ravnica 3 being in Staandard Color Fixing has been really bad for the most part.

Like when the Pain Lands are unplayable..that is really good mana for a Standard Format because Previously we had..Pathways and Snarls.

I legitimately think pathways are better then all of those cards in a vacuum except maybe slowlands. I'm not going to argue that that format had better mana but I've heard other people claim that the number of choices will lead us to some degenerate 5c midrange singularity when every land in standard other than triomes are basically B and Cs that get cut from any format that has fetches because they suck. There are only 2 greedy 5 color piles in standard and Jodah works because it has 12 untapped rainbow lands for legendary humans only and can run pretty much nothing else because of it and Atraxa only works because it's a green leaning deck running 12 basic land tutors.

You basically have to be doing something so absolutely degenerate that your opponent will not ever recover if you get to do it to justify a 5c base without fetches, and you have to warp your entire deck around trying to make it actually consistent and come together. And even then you just get run over by white because play Thaila on curve go brrr

Spoilers have begun??? Apparently??? Clues abound as MTG crosses over with Clue: the board game, wotc continues to insist on making their new original characters donut steal into some form of brown (what fucking kind of name is Alquist proft?), and we get what I think is the funniest card name I’ve seen in ages: Wojek investigator. As soon as I can get to my PC I’m making a Wojak alter. Oh, full art basics are back, and water is wet.

Every card better produce a clue token in this crossover set.

Long, long ago, when actual influences and creativity went into sets that weren't drawn from pop culture wastewater, Ravnica was a set with many specifically polish influences, among them the naming conventions. Wojek Halberdiers was a solid as hell limited card, but there are plenty of other cards that reference it.
For some retarded reason they have included the shock lands in the clue crossover,
Probably because the Clue set, which isn't standard legal, is like $75 for the... 'box' or whatever it is, and we're coming off of a set with very, very few cards in it at rare or mythic that break the $1 mark.

Pathways are Garbage, I wouldn't even use them in Commander in anything more than 2 colors.
They go in after the shocks and whichever fast/slow lands make sense in 2 color decks in explorer/historic. They usually don't make the cut in 3 color unless I'm doing some horseshit where it's one color and 2 splashes but it's never worse than drawing a Waste in 3 color which is much more than I can say about every single painland/provisionally tapped land. Not being able to cast your spells because of a pathway is usually a skill issue where there's noting you can do about "drew my 4th land as a triome, it came in tapped so I couldn't wrath and died"
