From MaRo's article...
Flavor
This crew is on a field trip, more or less. The Speed Demon itself is a lesser creature of Valgavoth's domain, embodying death and speed. He's been released by Valgavoth to chaperone Winter, who has been promised a chance at freedom if he successfully secures the Aetherspark. Alongside Winter and the Speed Demon are a whole host of possessed survivors, glitch ghosts, razorkin, and other creatures of Duskmourn. They're working at advancing Valgavoth's assimilation process across the Multiverse

They are really going to make the demon the next big bad....

Who else would they make the main villain?
Pretty much all their previous villains are on ice right now. Bolas could escape the Meditation Realm via the omenpaths, especially now that Ugin's not babysitting him. Wrenn could end up corrupted by the Phyrexian oil and find a way to phase the Phyrexians back into the multiverse, or else some random spot of oil no one noticed before could reconstitute them. Emrakul is, as mentioned, in the moon on Innistrad and could be jailbroken whenever. Tezzeret and Ashiok are still kicking around somewhere, doing who-knows-what. Jace is apparently being set up as a future antagonist.

So yeah, they could recycle push anyone as the bad guy.

Not a chance, they are pulling mystery box shit with what Jace and Vraska are doing with Loot because they are such shitty writers they have to try to make everyone go "OOOOOOOOOOOH MY GOD WHAT DOES JACE WANT?"

They have learned exactly zero from the Bullshit with Emrakul during Shadows over Innistrad.

They really missed their chance.

After creating the Jacetice League they should have prepped a Legion of Doom planeswalker group and had fun with that.

Seriously, with the new set we have reached actual Saturday morning cartoons level of sophistication.
Just have each new set be the latest episode, then have Teferi undo everything and reset for the next episode. Its perfect. No continuity errors because nothing matters and nothing ever happens!

I would have started with something like that instead of going straight for Bolas and the Eldrazi.

Okay..how so?

It's literally the River Scene in the movies isn't it?
For reasons I went back to this old post.

Friend reminded me that a previous LOTR card game has the elf culture color be blue.

I know they'll never admit it but I wonder if that's why Magic made the LOTR elves g/u.

That would require them to have done research and know the LOTR game exists.

It's literally just the River Scene from the movies.

I'd say it's more that there's an argument that elves=knowledge & sort of nautical from the ships, but more if you DON'T make elves blue who the fuck is blue in LotR; pretty much just Goldberry and Wizards, sometimes.

They might. Back in the day I remember when you could only find stats on card games in scry magazine.

Every month the top selling TCGs were 1. Magic followed by others.

Save 2 times.

Pokémon knocked it off the top spot for a bit.

The other card game?

LotR TCG right when the movies came out.

I could see some staff being petty enough to do it as a taunt.

(At least that I ever saw in the magazine.)
