We just don't want two hour stalemates. If all you want to do is win then obviously you're not fun to be around.

It's not that winning is bad, but one should allow the other players to play the game and to try to avoid the easiest and most boring a+b instant wins. You should stop your opponents from winning and you should try to win, but the mentality around how you do that is different at casual commander and if you want to go all out the is what high level and cEDH is for.I despise the entire "Rule Zero Conversation" bullshit.
I have come to absolutely hate that "Everyone has to do their thing" and "Winning is bad" has become a normal thing in EDH. Sure it's a Social format but like..it's still a game. You should still be trying to win.
On one hand, the kind of people (Spikes) who are driven to win at any costs fucking suck because of edge shooting and other bullshit like that. Not even fun political things like lying, but being actually dishonest about obscure rule interactions to give themselves an advantage. Something like that happened at a match I was playing recently and I just conceded and refused to play with him anymore. If all you want to do is win then obviously you're not fun to be around.
This kind of behavior is so common with commander players my reaction to it has gone from incredulous to disdainful to settle on pity. They asked me "What were the cards and how do you win with them?" [Edited for my own sanity]
Did you tell them that milling has been a thing since Revised?I remember one time where before playing we were discussing the decks we were gonna play. I was playing mill and i told the others that i have exactly 1 infinite combo and 1 finite combo. They told me what were the cards and what they did and i told him to figure it out while playing. He lost his shit and started to get angry and say that mill is not the way mtg is intended to be play, is not a real deck etc etc.
thank god my playgroup isnt like this but i just hate it how some people expect you to kneecap/handicap yourself just because of one player.
I prefer people who like to do stupid shit with their deck and once they do that they're good. If an AI can play the deck without stalling it's likely not a fun deck to watch go off.On one hand, the kind of people (Spikes) who are driven to win at any costs fucking suck because of edge shooting and other bullshit like that.
On the other hand, I fucking hate the type of Bluetranny that just wants to draw cards and make new rat with no real game plan, not even some retarded 7 card 50 mana combo. They just do the MTG version of gooning - turn 1 Rhystic Study into drawing cards and durdling for 45 minutes.
I play cEDH to annoy people. It's not that winning is bad, but one should allow the other players to play the game and to try to avoid the easiest and most boring a+b instant wins. Personally I think it's a fine question to ask and I have answered the question before. I think getting mad about someone not disclosing it is wrong. I believe most players are trying to be fair and meet the power of decks they are playing against and if the first game goes poorly you can always adjust afterwards for the next game. This kind of behavior is so common with commander players my reaction to it has gone from incredulous to disdainful to settle on pity.
Mind you, is not that i keep the info of the cards a secret during the whole game. I just tell them as soon as both cards are on the field "if you dont do X ill do Y and win" then i proceed to explain them in detail the infinite combo since it is not a common knowledge combo if you havent played against mill before. I just dont like to diclose my combos because one time, some mono blue nigger literally held a counter spell for one of the pieces after i made the mistake of telling him the name of the cards.Personally I think it's a fine question to ask and I have answered the question before. This is a casual format and a social one at that you to have to give and take when interacting with strangers.
There is a difference between "All I want to do is win" and "Purposefully dicking around" and part of that is deck building. I fucking hate the people who play seem to think interaction in any way shape or form is "Off the table"We just don't want two hour stalemates. If all you want to do is win then obviously you're not fun to be around.
I mean, I advocate for Oracle to be banned because it is a mistake card that can't be reasonably interacted with.I don't shove thoracle combo into every deck that can play it because it's fucking boring, but realistically I should because it would allow me to instant win.
And you aren't allowed to put them out of the game ASAP because that is "Unfun" despite knowing that the deck is going to be a problem late game. They just do the MTG version of gooning - turn 1 Rhystic Study into drawing cards and durdling for 45 minutes.
That's really shitty, but I recommend stating that the next time it ever comes up or simply state that we should play a game first and if it goes poorly we can always adjust for game 2.I just dont like to diclose my combos because one time, some mono blue nigger literally held a counter spell for one of the pieces after i made the mistake of telling him the name of the cards.
Grudges and poor threat assessment doesn't anger me so much as make me laugh at this point. Yeah sure focus on me while there is an eldrazi on the battlefield because I have won with this deck in the past despite my poor board presence or hand size at the moment. They don't even win the game either. So many blue niggers will sit across a table from someone going off and hold their counter for a card you beat them with before.
I enjoy it, but I feel like a lot of players probably should just form their own playgroup, only play with friends, or stick to 60 card formats.for what people call the fun version of magic nobody seems to be having any fun
Most times I don't mind it, and I especially don't care if they're new. Listening to someone politic for 5 minutes during their turn that I'm actually the biggest threat at the table because I always beat them is another thing. Like, shit nigger. I'm playing commander focused meme decks. Just run interaction and stop trying to convince others to do it for you.Grudges and poor threat assessment doesn't anger me so much as make me laugh at this point. Goad, initiative, the monarchy, etc are all great mechanics designed to encourage combat because wizards understands their audience perfectly. Too many non confrontational nerds are terrified to become the archenemy because they attacked for 1 damage on turn 2. This tier system rule zero conversation thing is the same issue. Players don't know how to interact as functional adults and instead become babies the moment you kill something with doom blade.I've started to play goad shit purely to stop the rest of my table from doing battle cruiser posturing against one another when they need to kill my friend whose greatest joy is reading every trigger on every one of his cards every turn.
This is why I think Vigilance is an underrated mechanic in Commander, I can attack..and when the crybabies decide I am a threat because I attacked with a 3/3.Goad, initiative, the monarchy, etc are all great mechanics designed to encourage combat because wizards understands their audience perfectly. It's gotten to the point where I've built an Augistin IV deck explicitly to ruin the evening of anyone who doesn't play to win the game.
Reconnaissance is an amazing card if you are playing white due to how the rules work and the newest printing in assassin's creed explains it as well. This is why I think Vigilance is an underrated mechanic in Commander, I can attack..and when the crybabies decide I am a threat because I attacked with a 3/3.
well that too but like this guyReconnaissance is an amazing card if you are playing white due to how the rules work and the newest printing in assassin's creed explains it as well.
