While I'm doubtful that this set will be on the level of FF for draft, I'm getting an impression that it will nevertheless be a good format. There's a lot of interesting interactions between the color pairs and sub-themes that it looks like they're threading between some of the mechanics, which was the secret-sauce to FF's incredible color-balance and varied drafts. There's also just a lot of tell-tale marks here of the competent designers working on this one, whereas the spiderman set (for which no-one really seems to give a shit) has the same marks as all the in-universe sets: "what if we printed a bunch of cards that are effectively strict upgrades and do a bunch of random, incoherent shit?" "What if we made a bunch of cards that have blocks of texts stapled to them in order to do incredibly limited things, as if everyone just played arena?"
It is pretty much confirmed that Spider-Man was going to be a small set like aftermath and assassin's creed. It was after those sets flopped harder than a lead balloon that they decided to make spidey a big set...

Which yeah, means a lot of rushed designs.
Well clearly Wizards has more rights licensed than Amazon, and I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon took the license that they did because they didn't want to make a LOTR property but figured it was better marketing if they stapled it onto whatever fantasy story they wanted to make. It's similar to how the Velma show wasn't supposed to be a Scooby Doo show but the studio wanted it to be linked to an existing IP, so they picked one they thought might somewhat fit.
Amazon paid 250 mil for the license.

Not for the show. Not for anything else. JUST the license and rights to the the name ALONE they paid $250 million. It's part of why Rings of Power is the current records holder for most expensive show ever made.

While sometimes companies will do title staples (I, robot is an infamous one - it was Its own thing until they realized they had rights to Asimov's property), again Amazon aggressively seeking out a deal woth Tolkien estates and paying that absurd amount for a tiny sliver of the whole thing proves this was not the case. They really wanted to corrupt LotR itself.

And yeah WOTC had the rights to the core books, but they clearly didn't have the rights to any other books as you don't see anything from those appearing in the game save where they intersect with the LOTR tale proper.

I mean...the Weatherlight was kinda sorta a space ship?

Also since the Unset with the ringmaster in drag had black bordered cards, I guess you could count those too if you don't want to count the Weatherlight.
Unset with a ringmaster in drag... are you fucking serious? holy hell, Fuck this game. and yes, i forgot about the Weatherlight, i think my point still applies.

They look fucking disgusting, they look like they were made by the same artists that made that shitty cyberpunk kamigawa set.

You missed the cowboy set, the detective set, the 1980s slasher-horror set, the race car set, and the one where they ripped off that comic with tiny woodland critters dressed up as knights. In-universe has been dead for a long time and is never coming back - and when they traipse out its corpse, you really wish they hadn't.

Final Fantasy, the set right before SPACE SHIPS! had an actual fantasy aesthetic and fairly simple, straightforward, easy-to-understand cards. And that fantasy aesthetic was, unlike Return to Tarkir, not just shitty WoW concept art rejects. It sold like complete mad and is proof that the company still has good designers, they just don't touch anything in-universe.
All of those happened? The final fantasy set, had more care and felt more like magic, than an actual fucking magic set? That's a fucking complete and utter joke. the final fantasy set sold gangbusters too right? like... 200 million in a week or something?

$200 million in a day from what they were reporting

It’s the best selling magic set in ages. Collector boxes (twelve packs of foils) are going for 1200$ at a MINIMUM. Compare that to the race car set, which no one is buying at all. It’s a mess.

are you fucking serious?

i still can't get over fucking "race car set." almost as bad as "spaceship set" and "furry set." wotc are just creatively bankrupt at this point huh?

So on his latest drive to work, MaRo had to do a followup to his state of design article.

I highly recommend you all at least listen to the first 5 minutes.

  • So at the start he outright admits they now do so much product he can't possibly judge and cover it all. So the podcast isn't even a recap of his SOD article but a supplement to it to go into more of what he can't with his word count allotment.
  • Unless I missed it, I'm 90% sure he left off omens on his discussion of Tarkir 2 mechanics.
  • He mentions that bloomburrow originally had a sacrifice theme in it. Only they noticed that for everybody, the best thing to sacrifice were offspring tokens. So they literally took out the sacrifice theme from bloomburrow for the babies.
  • Talks about how everyone loves saga creatures over the old versions of creatures with fading/vanishing.
  • Admits they overstuffed duskmourn.

Honestly I think we'll see Harry Potter shit in MTG sooner rather than later.
For the first time ever, I genuinely support and hope the tranny faggot army rally against the " JK rolling le nazi transphobe" and actually get the dub and stop harry potter MtG from happening.

We could really use that banned card Cleanse, "destroy all black creatures" to clear the board of real life.

People who buy these are delusional.
There's always that one douche on reddit who's like "Don't preorder, the set doesn't come out for three months!" but then at release boxes are going for three times MSRP.

The Avatar set sold out in seconds. Not minutes, seconds.

Frustratingly, WotC is underprinting all its UB sets and forcing collectors to buy from scalpers. Eventually production will amp up and meet demand, but we're not there yet.

You do understand it's ok to skip a set, right?

Declaring haram on UB sets have saved me a whole bunch. Also adds a nice little challenge to playing due to power creep. I do enjoy a good challenge.

Spiderkike boxes are now $1200, holy fuck! it jumped from $900 a week ago. Is it just scalpers bumping the prices? it's still not out for another month and a half. At my LGS they cut the boxes and remove the plastic on the outside of all products so scalper trannies have full on tranny meltdowns over being handed their box that they can no longer resell properly. It's funny as fuck to see apparently. I don't want any of the spiderkike slop but I think I will go to the pre-release just to see if any Tranny scalpers freak out over their ripped spiderkike boxes.

Sorry if this is late. I have'nt played or collected in awhile. But can someone explain to me why some booster boxes for the upcoming Avatar set are going for around 900 bucks?

1. Retail price was $429
2. Its a product which features a beloved IP.
3. Rudy brought "investors" and Pokemon brought scalpers to the hobby.
4. The set sold out in SECONDS on Amazon and Best Buy.
5. Historical trend for Final Fantasy and Spider-Man collector boosters have been pushing boxes into the $900-1000 range.
6. Collector Boosters usually have chase cards (aka lottery tickets) which can sell for tens of thousands of dollars.
7. WotC drastically underprints this shit.
