I'm going to fucking rip my goddamn eyes out. Not only Aragorn, but Eowyn and Theoden too? I think i saw a black hobbit and a fucking female black ranger with dreads too? My fucking blood is boiling. Also, based skullgirls pfp.
Funny thing is that Eomer is still white despite Eowyn being black.
The Easterlings and Haradrim are also white for some reason.

What a fucking joke, is Cloud white? did they make Sephiroth a street shitter? or are they what they should be? They just had to shit on tolkien's work huh? is Aang going to be black? is Zuko going to be? Jesus fucking christ.

Every Final Fantasy card looks like how they are supposed to and all the Avatar cards so far look correct.

Then why fuck with LOTR? Just cause they can? I could at least make sense of it if they raceswapped everything, but just randomly going, "erm, make Aragorn, Eowyn, Theodyn and some random hobbits black." Why. Is this some fucking boiling frog in a pot shit? Can't make everyone raceswapped, the unwashed masses will actually see what we are trying to do, no, we've gotta do this slowly so that by the time they realize it's too late.

I'm pretty sure that the LOTR set was based on the books, not the movies; ergo, no visual references for characters' appearances or contractual need for cards to resemble the characters on which they are based (you know Squeenix would be pissed if they made Cloud a vantablacksudanesenigger). This basically gave the MTG artists free rein to do whatever they want with the characters. Plus, this is WoTC we're talking about, there was certainly a directive from those in charge of the company to make the cards as diverse as possible. Either as some kind of diversity quota or because they actually think diversity = good/profitable (they're wrong); or perhaps, just to spite Tolkien himself (the woke left HATE Tolkien).

LOL WTF?

So that's actually what pissed me off about this.

They LITERALLY make a commercial about how much more faithful they are being to the books than the movies were...
(it's 30 sec, literally watch it)

Well what does the book say of Aragorn? "a shaggy head of dark hair flecked with grey, and in a pale stern face a pair of keen grey eyes."

Don't brag about being more faithful and then do a race swap ignoring the book.

Dear god, it's beautiful. One guy with some fucking heart has made a better playset then a multi BILLION dollar company.
I mean... there's literally been 3 other LOTR card games off the top of my head.

Just saying guys. Be the real snobs. Bring up middle earth like a Chad.

(I am now going to see how much of that art I can identify sources for.)

EDIT. Yep. Already spotted them.

I thought part of LotR is that with Christopher dead its pretty much free-reign with what adaptations want to do, since the Tolkien estate probably just wants money. They could not care less about the sanctity of the work, so long as it brings in the checks.

Also, while many other properties are (slightly) shifting with the political winds, I really doubt it will happen to MtG without some major upheaval. That sort of thing seems very deeply ingrained in WotC, so its probably not going away for a long time.

So long as it's profitable, the corporate-level guys don't really care. If Magic ever slips, I think you'll see layoffs hit the company which pointedly target where the rot is coming from: the art director, the writing leads.

I'm sure the designers are fairly progressive in and of themselves, but I somehow don't think it was the designers who decided all of the women need to look more unrealistically mannish and that the story of "interdimensional rifts in reality" needed to be cutesy-cuddly pop-culture-slop-fests in which everyone realizes the strength of friendship and how together, we can overcome anything!!!!

But... he still edits after every sentence in that six year old video that DootSkeleton posted? again, too much for me, just... play the game? some editing is fine, i understand you need to edit a fair amount for your video not to be an hour long. But seeing a distinct cut after EVERY sentence is way, way too much.
It feels a lot less terrible if you see how bad most other MTGO content is presented: completely unedited stream recordings. Magic Aids blasts through a MTGO League tournament report in 15 minutes with a dub-over while still explaining the thoughts behind each decision he makes, meanwhile too many other MTGO videos are going to be 1-3 hours long and be half full of streamer chatter.
