I've watched Avatar before, but I think it's a pretty bad pick. Avatar is based around a four color-element world. Fire, Wind, Water, and earth. Which doesn't neatly fit onto the color pie, white/blue are usually the wind elements, but the water tribes aren't that Blue in their ideology, mostly Red/White with some Green so it feels off flavor wise. Fire slots into red pretty well and since their villains they'll probably get black, even if the faction on a whole is probably Mardu. Black and green both share a lot of the earth theming, and there's earth bending secret police and apparently some evil earthbenders in korra, that I didn't watch, so I guess they'd get black due to being villains.
I saw some of the spoilers and Aang getting a mono-white card feels off. He's way more red. While Zuko as the fire lord gets Black, somehow, despite him not being Black in personality or powers. He's just black due to being the 'leader' of a villain faction. Even though the war has ended by that point. This even comes up with some other characters like Hei Bai who's very mono-green, maybe black/green. But gets a black/white card due to being a panda.
It's still a better fit than the two color good versus evil world of spiderman and marvel which lazily slapped black onto the villains even if it didn't fit power or lorewise.
Either way I won't be buying.
I don't fully agree, i think you could do a Last Airbender set that fits well if you work hard at it.

However i think it would be easier time doing all 3 series since you have a bunch of different groups to do.

She looks like someone who's been sexually active, her brother not so much. I do believe him when he says he doesn't bathe however.

Nifty, i hope spear chick is op so i can build a stax deck with her and have a Kpop Tranny Hunter

Edit : So the Commander Panel had a post today, they are apparently thinking about revising the rules a bit to allow Hybrid cards to count as either Color Identity, it isn't very many cards (less than 500) so I think they should go for it..it won't hurt anything and fuck it Free my Nigger Kitchen Finks!

At least K Pop Demon Hunters was fun, at least.

These sets are just miserable. The fact that they are showing UB sets so far in advance shows they're concerned about it not selling well. Spider-Man did awful. I bet the licensing is expensive. I think I mentioned here a while ago that the issue with UB is going to come into diminishing returns quickly. I think their release calendar had the opposite effect. They want to be Fortnite, but their product is not cheap like Fortnite skins.

Whoever wanted to do Avatar is severely progressive, as it had a huge Tumblr crowd, but they are late. Also, in all the nerdy conversations I have been in, no one has suggested Avatar. People have wanted FF for years, Avatar crickets. The product is going to fail.

I noticed a similar thing with Bloomburrow and Duskmourn. The latter got a lot of advertising and press but I saw almost none for Bloomburrow, I imagine because they were already confident in the innate appeal of cute sparkly-eyed critters. If they wanted to get more women—actual women—playing the game, Bloomburrow would've been a good time to bring back blocks.

It's been frustrating i've been playing commander for about 12 years, and with so many new players in the format you can tell they have never played any other form of magic. It feels like i have to use kids gloves when playing against them, like god forbid i try to end this game after a hour or stop you from doing "the thing". I've had to cultivate who i play with now. and its been so much harder to have pick up games

Toxic Positivity Culture, Gotta let everyone do the thing..the Game can't be about trying to stop someone from doing things while you are trying to do the thing and prevent them from stopping you...

I got a young guy to try out some other formats a week or two ago and he was astonished by how different the game is, said he finally understood how different the game really is and why guys like me say they have no idea what they're doing. They don't know what they don't know, I suppose.

I have nearly given up hope at this point of having good pick-up games. My local shop can only get EDH events to fire anymore with more than 4 people, even drafts for FNM flop. 60-card has been dead since COVID in my region, and it used to have a thriving Modern crowd of 20-30 regulars. I've been chasing a few more singles to make a sort of time capsule of Premodern / Modern 2015 decks and box up my collection for a while. Either things improve, Bezos / Musk / etc replace Hasbro as owners once the execs fuck up enough, or I let it collect dust in a safe area. Maybe someday my kids will want to learn how to play a physical game I used to enjoy, and I want them to experience it the way I enjoyed it instead of FF / Spiderman / Avatar / TMNT / Space random cards.

I don't keep up with the game...is the common complaint that there is too much product/oversaturation?

When i did follow more closely I was getting overwhelmed with all the product coming out. The regular sets, the supplemental set...it was too much. And I didnt like the flavor of new sets

I liked mtg when it was high fantasy. And that old story was cool. All that weatherlight stuff, imo, was cool

But now everything is themed and stuff

Im working on a cube right now of all my old nostalgic stuff and that's it.

The big complaints are:
1) Too much product/oversaturation like you said. I count seven sets releasing next year.
2) Hit or miss quality - balance issues are common and Limited tends to be an even bigger mess than Constructed.
3) Giving up on world/character development for in-universe sets - MtG's worldbuilding was passable at best even at its peak, but now it's bordering on zero effort.
4) Universes Beyond - Remember when WotC said they'd never make a set based on another IP? That got memory holed when they realized it was easy, reliable money. In addition to many longtimers mostly disliking Magic sets using other IPs on principle, these sets have hit or miss quality and serious problems with scalpers.
5) DEI/Woke - Race swapping/forced diversity is ubiquitous even when it does not fit with the lore (e.g. retconning Aragorn from Lord of the Rings to be black) and constant troonery for the in-universe sets.

All of which has collectively gutted LGSes, so even when a good set does release too many people have tuned out already for sales/event attendance to rebound to the point WotC might start fixing the mess it has made.

Part 5 also has leaked to the MTG Pro Scene, since player pronouns are now displayed during livestreams, in addition to the high amount of troon players and even casters.

I believe a good example this year was there was a few times where one set was either just out or coming out soon, and the next batch of spoilers started. There's quite a bit, and it does not help either that most of it is standard legal which means it filters everywhere. Used to be that at least supplemental sets were kinda insular (like Conspiracy) where while a couple cards would effect legacy, you wouldn't have to worry about it if you played Modern or Standard. Now absolutely everything is for everyone. While masters sets were overdone, at least they weren't introducing a bunch of new things each time.

I heard about Value Vintage (essentially just Vintage with a $30 cap on your deck) and that sounded pretty fun. At the very least it was interesting to try and brew, I haven't heard really much about it since it seems still quite niche which I suppose could be a good thing.

Also, my friend judged at an event this weekend that featured Spiderman as the main set. Apparently similar events for other sets would get about 30-40 8-person drafts. Spiderman had about 13 4-person drafts. Not too surprising, especially if its not even a fun draft like I've heard.

Yeah i think the last set i remember being into was around dominaria and ixalan and even then it was like too much

Really? I was always a cuber and I fucked around with vintage and occasional drafting

I didnt notice balance issues but imo i didnt really like the mechanics coming out. The energy shit? The vehicles? Flip cards? Fucking planeswalkers...i hated all of that shit.

for me, I always the simplicity of core sets. I know that's a minority opinion but i loved the ubiquity of the designs. I love that we just had a card called "black cat", you know?

those new mechanics were just bleh for me
3) Giving up on world/character development for in-universe sets - MtG's worldbuilding was passable at best even at its peak, but now it's bordering on zero effort.
like i said, i loved the old stories. The brothers war and the weatherlight stuff was cool...at least cool enough for the backstory of a card game. It it had good aesthetic. What really broke it for me was they egypt set.

it just seemed really lazy, and it never got better.
4) Universes Beyond - Remember when WotC said they'd never make a set based on another IP?
i dont l

yeah i could see that. For me...I like the abilities and IDEA of like...spider man or TMNT. But it doesnt fit aesthetically with what i want the game to look like. Let me play a llanowar elves or necropotence and then play fucking Gwen Stacy or Leonardo or Dr. Ian Malcolm...like...it doesnt fit no matter how cool the mechanics or abilities are

fucking seriously?

Sigh....

I found out today that they put Bolas's Citadel on a commander, and it's fucking "Gwenom."

One thing that has irked me, looking through their financials, is that WOTC's success is somewhat false. It plugs up Hasbro's spiralling revenue; they're also using the MTG money to cover the other failings of WOTC, notably DnD. On top of that, too is their firing policy they use to "support" profit to cover up for growth. If they had not fired people, there would have been no growth at all.

The problem is that they cannot perform these tricks next year because of licensing costs being higher, but also, they have run out of staff to fire. They cannot even introduce a new product, either because there is too much and it gets too close to their print limit.

WoTC is going to strangle their whales and fatigue casual audiences. The reason why the Marvel sets are stretched out is to cover the enormous licensing costs; the superheroes set is going to be ridiculously expensive for them.
