I still find it amusing that despite their intense desire for "diversity" and "inclusivity", current Wizards would never create a place as cool and earnest as Jamuraa was in the Mirage block. These days it's just gimmicks all the way down.
If their 'egypt' set is any indication, another african-themed set would wind up just being WAKANDA because the diversity crew has studied exactly zero african civilizations and cultures.

It really does make me pine for the early 2000s, where people included diverse and interesting settings in fantasy because they wanted to and because it was interesting, rather than just slathering another boring, uninteresting setpiece in a different coat of paint. Thematically I think ever plane after Khans has been pretty uninteresting if not downright boring, and Khans was only really interesting for the first set of the block anyways. I guess Kaladesh at least had pretty art.

This has been a problem since they decided to move away from "Dominaria as the center of the storyline" and went on a "tour of planes" 20 years ago.

Kamigawa? Discount Japan
Innistrad? Discount Eastern Europe
Theros? Discount Greece
Tarkir? Discount Mongolia
Amonkhet? Discount Egypt
Kaladesh? Discount India
Ixalan? Discount South Murika
Eldraine? Utter ripoff of grim's fairy tales.

Every time they go somewhere interesting like Mirrodin, Ravnica, Llorwyn or Zenidkar they immediately fuck the things that make the plane intersting up completely.

Mirrodin? 90% of the population poofed out of existence and now the Phyrexians rule it
Ravnica? The Second Guildpact fell apart offscreen and now they need another magical one to reinforce it
Llorwyn's day/night cycle causing massive changes to it's population is over forever
Zendikar released the eldrazi and now it's leylines are more stable so it isn't nearly as dangerous to live there as before.

Tarkir? Discount Mongolia
Kamigawa, original Innistrad, and first-set Tarkir are the kinds of hopping around to thematic planes which I can enjoy, though. Kamigawa taking a huge note from Japanese mythos and shinto makes it have a truly unique and otherworldly atmosphere, Innistrad is the right amount of camp that doesn't take itself too seriously, and Tarkir draws from Mongols, Byzantines, Persians, Tibetians, Khmer, and Siberians. It's not as much of a deep-dive into different civilizations and cultures as the original Dominaria, sure, but there's enough in these places that they're unique and fun.

Theros was boring and fucking sucks, though. The Innistrad re-tread was boring. Fate reforged and Dragons of Tarkir sucked.

It would also be better if the game felt more 'centered' rather than constantly touring around. It seems like they've slowly drifted back to telling vignette stories on planes rather than trying to tie everything together into some big, dumb, overarching story... but those vignettes are boring and uninteresting because the planes they're used on are shallow. I kindof like how Ikoria's main story was centered around someone who was essentially an eco-terrorist, but the plane itself is fucking boring and doesn't even remotely make sense. I don't even know what happens on Kaldheim and nothing about zendikar rising has stuck in my mind, much less reminded me of the original block.

I don't think they'll ever go back to having a 'central' plane and only at times looking elsewhere. And, yeah - they make a cool, unique setting and they either drive it into the ground or blow it up to the point where they're now thinking 'hmmm harry potter and dnd planes, sounds like a great idea'

The artist must have a few friends with to get this shit in

Core set as well!

I'm still leaning on Rudy, but you're going to get dinged for the surface wear, particularly along the edges, so don't expect max value no matter who you end up going through.
So I tried sending my Lotus to Card Kingdom to see what they would offer. It got called "GOOD" condition because of wear and tear mostly on the edges. They offered $5,300 which seems way low to me. I asked them to send it back and I want to see where else I might be able to move it. People have mentioned Rudy, anyone know how to reach him? Anyone know the best place to get cards formally appraised? If they say something similar to CK I'm still probably screwed but can get a bit more money on eBay I imagine, cutting out the middleman, but I have my worries doing that.

Any tips would be appreciated. I kind of need the cash right now so looking to move it in a quick way but wasn't satisfied with the 5 large CK offered. If that's truly what it's worth so be it but it doesn't feel right to me.

High end mtg fb group maybe? if you haven’t tried it yet

Desolator wondered if she was mad at WotC and did an art to troll them.
The background looks good. The body looks fantastic other than the MS Paint bucketjob fill. Did WOTC give her shit about, like, the character looking sexual or something? The hood and the corset are very clearly drawn on last, and if you overlook those everything looks great. Lots of her other work features mostly-nude female forms, so maybe wotc bitched about it and she grabbed the paint tool to fulfill their request?

Like, I cannot look at her rendering of a molotv towards the bottom that page and say that's anything but fantastic

You make some sense. If she made the figure a girl and then WotC pitched a fit and demanded it be androgynous so the artist got mad... that would explain a lot.

This did make me chuckle though.

Typically they have the artists do multiple card for the set, do there are other 'masterpieces' floating around that haven't been announced yet, or they saw this one card and fired her on the spot.

I wish WotC would stop putting cards I want in products that shoot up in price after release. I'm sitting on boxes of Time Spiral and Modern Horizons I can never open because they've both doubled in price since I bought them.

Hope Strixhaven fails, because I wanna open this fucker and add him to my collection.

Don't worry, the way Hasbro is riding Wizards is riding Magic into the fucking dirt, those cards won't be worth much in a few years.

Just sell the box and buy the pretty card after ~19-30 days of release, ezpz. I think these collector's boosters are a massive fucking grift aimed straight at gambling addicts, but goddamn has it made everything from the new sets incredibly affordable to pick up for upgrading bits and bobbers on some commander decks.

The new commander decks actually look incredibly fun, and it seems for the most part like wizards R&D has gotten a little better at not printing shit like Arcane Signet or those fucking 'cast-for-free' spells that become almost immediate includes whenever you can afford to. It's just such a shame that it seems like there's one competent division's worth of people at the company -- commander stuff has been hitting it out of the park, but the competitive formats having to suffer doesn't seem like a great tradeoff. I have no idea how limited has been, either.

There's one of those mythic...archive? Whatever bullshit name they gave it in every pack. Even if it's a rare one it should still be out there.

Who plays paper magic nowadays? It basically died off completely last year and was replaced with MTG Arena.
