Check out Fate/Strange Fake. Has all the secret magic school in London shit but a subplot in that universe is the equivalent of the noble houses do a big ritual to grant a super powerful wish. The particular story in question they bring it America only because they have express permission by the military because the USA has potential to collect intel on super magic. yeah, this pretty much. well, I know were you are coming from, so I know we will not agree on the details, but in general a hero must contribute something to society outside of defeating big bad, because if not, he might as well be big bad.
The voldemord premise is basically that he has nothing to offer, but destruction which is also were malfoid would come in to fix it with harry, because what really goes on here is that slytherin's champion is foul, not that they are evil or that they have been "seduced by evul", the good and evil axiom which harry potter relies on is just lazy, proper myth is about continuity of the human race.
If one were a good author, you could point out why pureblood ideology or really just certain aspects it, lead to siltherinians championing a corrupted dysgenic without a nose, but that's too much too expect from a committee box checking excercise for teens like harry potter.

If it's not wife'n'kids, the contribution of the hero must be significant outside of just warfare, because having nothing else on the table IS the the voldemort problem.

Chaste in that the relationship is about virtue and a connection instead of lust. Not that the relationship has a complete absence of attraction. This is particularly appealing to people in this age of people having lists of physical requirements.

Part of the appeal is that they are a complimentary pair. You even see this in the fanfictions where the vices of Slytherin (skepticism/distrust, ambition, cunning/resourcefulness) become virtues and save the day alongside the virtues of Gryffindor through Malfoid becoming a more prominent character in the story.

Instead of this being part of the human condition it could actually be a product of our moment in time where people place alot of emphasis on potential partners being similar or even exactly like them.

Now, I haven't read the books, so my opinion is based on the movies, but who gives a damn about Potter or any other character? They are boring as fuck, and Potter especially - he is a dull and gay nepobaby. What really is fun about the series is the setting. I don't think that there are kids who saw the movie, but didn't wish to study in Hogwarts.

It's a children's story, and a love interest isn't really needed.
