A man is in critical condition after setting himself on fire midday Sunday outside the Israeli Embassy in D.C., authorities said.

No one else was injured in the incident, which took place just before 1 p.m. in the 3500 block of International Drive NW. A video shared online, which multiple officials said appeared to be posted by the man, shows him shouting “Free Palestine” as he burned.

The man said he was an active-duty member of the U.S. Air Force. A spokeswoman for the Air Force, Ann Stefanek, said they had not yet identified the man or verified whether he is in the service.

Since the Israel-Gaza war began just over four months ago, at least 29,629 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Israel estimates that about 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack and says 240 soldiers have been killed since the start of its military operation in Gaza.

Hamas and allied fighters took more than 253 people hostage during the attack. More than 100 were freed in exchange for more than 200 Palestinian detainees during a November pause in fighting. Israeli authorities believe that more than 100 hostages remain in Gaza.

On Sunday, uniformed Secret Service officers responded to a report of a person experiencing a possible medical or mental health emergency, said Joe Routh, a U.S. Secret Service spokesman.

Responding officers put out the fire before D.C. firefighters arrived, around 1 p.m., fire department spokesman Vito Maggiolo said. The D.C. Fire and Emergency Services department then took the man to a hospital in life-threatening condition. He remained hospitalized Sunday afternoon.

In the video, which is just over three minutes long, one person can be heard saying, “Hi, sir, can I help you?” as the man approaches the gate to the embassy.

About 12 seconds later, as a person again asks, “Can I help you, sir,” the man lights the fire.

The man burned for about a minute and collapsed on the ground, the video showed, before law enforcement began to extinguish the fire.

Really living up to the squadron motto. The timing is certainly strange though, he has only 2-3 months left and it looks like he was outprocessed and getting ready to leave early through skillbridge. Either command denied his application and this is one petty way of spiting leadership or there was a host of mental illnesses not addressed properly b/c medical sucks ass
Intelligence is what we reap? Yeah, maybe, but definitely not this guy, all he reaped was 4 Gallons of Zippo lighter fuel.

Since the injuries weren't sustained in the line of duty, but self-inflicted, the military may not pay a dime for his medical costs. A line-of-duty determination is likely to be made; there's latitude but this is off the continuum. He may also face charges under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. He will still get pay and allowances, can't say about life insurance.
All he's facing now is the reaper.
Guy has titanic balls for pulling off what he did. Also, this stunt is really gonna kick recruitment rates square in the balls because alot of hopefuls are gonna start asking questions like "Why did he burn himself in front of the Israeli embassy?" and in turn, might just run into the JQ.

The Golem is slowly, but surely turning on its master.
Yeah, something like this is exactly what the military does not want to gain traction considering the war machine is raring to go. Shame that this man immolating himself was all over the morning news.

he's active duty, they would have paid no matter what. Hell, I've been out for ten years and I still tell hospital staff to bill the VA. I haven't paid a dime for medical care in years

They're pumping out the propaganda. I'm shocked about how many people are valorizing this guy. His death is completely meaningless.

I like how it's all him standing resilient in the face of the fire, and not screaming his head off until his vocal cords burn away and he's left shambling in blind circles until he collapses.

An unconscionable waste. This kid could have done anything with his life, and instead he snuffs it out in service of... Palestine? No, as is so often the case with pointless self destruction, it is obvious that "LillyAnarKitty" is yet another Online Man radicalized by an incomprehensible political ideology. If he had a father to make proud or a woman to come home to, he would be alive today. It's the kind of martyrdom conditional on whether or not another human being touched him within the last five years. This, he figures, is how he will get someone to love him, even if it's just the over-medicated transgender furries of his septic commie message board of choice. I will give him all the credit that is his due, and resolve to forget his name immediately.

Does this mean he had a security clearance? Should have leaked classified glowie information while he was at it
Very, very likely a very high clearance. He was at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. Visited those activities when the place was called Kelly Air Force Base; Kelly was right next to Lackland. Spent five years on the other side of town at Randolph Air Force Base.

More communist should emulate themselves in front of embassies of countries they consider fascists I fully support this all the Neo-Nazi supporting Palestine are literally supporting anti-colonialist third world is communist
This man is an idiot and hopefully he has a painful existence also don't set yourself on fire it is a really painful way to go

personal gain. it's a job you can't get fired from that gives you benefits for the rest of your life. Also, the airforce is the cushiest branch. I don't even consider them veterans. Very few of these champagne socialists have any principles. I don't know what instigated the crisis of conscience but such instances are rare
Yes, you can be fired from the military. Yes, the AF tends to live better than the other services, but the AF still has people who bust their ass on the flight line, or who are combat controllers, fly combat missions, etc. I'd say they have earned the title of veteran.

By the way, when did you serve?
