Let's Sperg Marathon 2025 - Bungie's new AAAA Extraction shooter

Blame literally anything but wokeness is todays modus operandi for gaming execs and urinalist aced with a flop.
Good, makes it even funnier when all these studios shut down and their projects fail
This is pretty much an announcement from the top that yes, this is a Concord level flop. Everything else is just cope, that's all we needed to hear.
BTW at least Concord was original, sure it was awful but there is no proof anything in it was stolen from a random twitter artist. In a way, nu-Marathon is even worse than Concord since it has no original bone in it's body. Well, aside from the clear inspiration from Mirror's Edge, obviously.

MARATHON OFFICIALLY DELAYED, NO NEW DATE GIVEN

I don't want to derail with Destiny stuff too much, but Tyson Green's excuses make no sense to me. They can't run the expansions any more because they're not compatible with the current Destiny 2 build, okay fine, but presumably they still have the code and assets archived somewhere?

Surely they didn't just delete all the files after the expansions were sunsetted...
I've seen this happen up close, but not with a dev of this size.
Before storage became super cheap versioning and archiving were slapdash at best at some studios.

It can also be useful to kill off projects or forks associated with people or teams management doesn't like or to hide things.

If I remember correctly, isn't Bungie's excuse that the files aren't LOST, but they are only compatible with older versions of the Destiny client so they can't get them to run today? Although that just implies that Bungie doesnt keep old builds beyond a certain date... does that seem likely?

Yes, I absolutely believe that Bungie is 1) that incompetent and 2) planned on "vaulting" content from the beginning so it's not like they cared enough to keep old builds around anyway. What for? The game has a planned expiry.

Called it months ago because this was literally the only option they had since they did the gameplay reveal to mixed reactions at best.
The plan is clearly to let other upcoming extraction shooters like Arc Raiders pave the foundation for the new top genre and slide in when people get bored of them, hoping everyone forgets about the art theft etc.

Arc drops in October so I imagine the new release date will be Q4 2026, but the changes to Marathon over the next year will be unnoticeable. They just want you to forget about the controversies.
They probably won’t even add any real character customization and keep it as a hero shooter with palette swaps.

I'm actually curious what they can change by delaying the game? It's 95% done, isn't it?

You can't exactly adjust gameplay by any significant amount at this point without writing off huge portions of it and delaying it by years.

Perhaps you could make it look better, but I thought the whole selling point was the aesthetics.

Removing a lot of stolen art. Maybe adding in future planned content because iirc the game wouldve had very few maps on launch.
In reality neither of these will be done and they'll probably spend the time adding more premium character thirst trap skins.

Why is every AAA gamedev announcement crouched in such shitty verbiage these days.

"yeah we're going to develop deeper blah blah blah blah with you our blah blah blah customers definitely not consumers blah blah blah we will do better etc etc"

And not "soz lads the game isn't ready".
