which reminds me, does it require a ps plus account? usually that's only voided for f2p games...
Yes, it does I believe. Same on Xbox, but honestly the online subscription to play multiplayer thing is pretty much ubiquitous now on console, even Niptendo got in on that action.

They apparently charge women less so it just incentivizes people to set their account to female to get better deals.
Ah yes, bars and clubs use that trick to lure in more women (who continue not to give any men at the bar any attention :story:) too. Gotta love it. Wonder why they think it'll work for games.

Funny thing is I think men in a few places have sued over that, alleging sex discrimination. Can't recall whether they succeeded or not, but I remember it being a reason why bars have stopped doing it as much in recent years.

Looks like we're in it for the long haul of a slow decline, rather than an impressive crash and burn. Crazy how "from the guys who fetched coffee for the guys who got hired by the guys who took credit for Halo after everyone actually involved left the company due to multiple strained relationships with larger corporations" still carries enough weight to let this happen. The thing to look for now is whether or not whatever content they shamelessly cut from launch to drip feed it at the end of the month for player retention actually gives them a boost and helps them stabilize somewhat higher, because bungie, especially its modern iteration, is one of the most legendarily inefficient devs with a talent for burning money on meaningless expenses.

Planet-wide fungus colony? Brother, they're just ripping off Sid Meyer's Alpha Centauri
Only the real ones will understand

Yep, once you sell out to a corporate overlord you tend to lose a lot of influence.

Did the Swedish guy who sold his game company (Mo-something?) to MSFT stay there very long?
As you said earlier, the industry is notorious for burnout, I don't blame founders of all these studios whose games we grew up with for selling out and leaving it all behind eventually once they made it big.
I do blame retarded gamers for failing to realize that people make studios what they are, and still buying obvious slop just because of the familiar name being attached to it, even though it's a product of troons and focus groups.
Sometimes all you can do is move on.

You’re giving them too much credit, it’s more, “from the retards that begged for change outside Bungie’s offices, comes a new breed of slo-I mean shooter.”

While I thought extraction shooters as a genre is certainly more of a PC thing, I absolutely didn't expect a Bungie game lagging on consoles saleswise. Suffah!

Better hurry up with all the tranny skins, you can still save it Bumbo

I'll eat a bit of crow, and admit that the drop today was not nearly as big as what I was expecting. However, turns out the console numbers for marathon are ABYSMAL, so if at any point the steam numbers drop severely and don't recover, it's basically dead without any other lifeline.
This thing is already dead man walking.
Even with the numbers they currently have. I doubt their servers are cheap. The numbers on steam are bad, if the numbers on console are worse. They aren't making that money back or enough to keep the servers going for long.
There is gonna be a point where the money made off MTX and the server cost like crosses and it starts going negative sooner than later.

Bungie employs 800 people, and rents out premium real estate in a very expensive part of the country, they can't keep the lights on with a pittance of 80,000 concurrent players, they need to be pulling peak Destiny 2 numbers, and they are not and never will with Marathon.

So the only path forward for them is more layoffs, likely a huge chunk of the workforce, unless Sony is still stupid enough to keep footing the bill for the lemon they've purchased.

Safe to say, they would've already closed if Sony wasn't propping them up. Everything I've seen leads me to believe Bungie is unsustainable without outside capital.
Their survival depends on whether Sony is going to fall for sunk cost fallacy. You'd think they've learned their lesson with the original Concord.

Sensible thing to do would be significantly reducing headcount and moving to a more affordable place, assuming they actually have any employees capable of producing a decent game, and just keeping those. That would be the bare minimum.

Overwatch and warframe devs call us out [L] / [A]

Funny how Digital Extremes tries to chime in on this, since compared to Blizzard or Bungie at the time they were in a very bad spot (had Warframe not succeeded they would have closed up shop. I'm pretty sure I didn't see that much dooming and glooming on whatever projects the other two companies were working on in 2013).

Lore update for those who are interested:

One detail that stood out to me is that there’s reportedly no mammalian life on Tau Ceti IV. Aside from plant life and the parasitic ticks, everything else is avian.

The anomaly itself was initially believed by colonists to be some kind of timed WMD left behind by the Pfhor. However, one scientist proposed a different theory that the anomaly may actually be a planetary scale immune response to an infection (the colony). He suspects the existence of a massive, planet wide fungal colony.

Another scientists attributes a lot of the strange happenings to a mass delusion.

The strangest reports come from some colonists claim they feel called to the anomaly’s ground zero. A few say they’ve seen long lost loved ones there. Others report being threatened by enemies or bullies urging them to go. There are even accounts of lights guiding people toward it.

The colony decided it was safer not to keep digging. Eventually, the colony suspended all research into the anomaly. The area was quarantined, a curfew was enforced, and personnel were relocated to other sectors.

Still there are those who are refusing to abandon their research.

While doing the dirty work of the many factions I am reminded of DUNE, where the major players arent necessarily friends, but are entirely reliant on each other. There is a set of missions where Traxus is trying its best to proceed through legal channels to partner with the UESC on some research, but under the table is having you do wet works to speed things along and gather what information you can find while they negotiate.
Late but ‘planetary immune system’ is a thing that ONLY AIs will write. I call out the hacks at bungo as I type this in my führerbunker.

I mean we literally had a movie like almost two decades ago about the earths immune system making people commit suicide because "humans are the real monsters" or some shit.

I'm pretty sure planetary immune systems and consciousness has been some leftist scifi bullshit for a while

Oh, I agree, but it's not so spectacularly bad that they're gonna be thinking "shut it down immediately", they're gonna be thinking "one more update, that will bring everyone in and fix it!".
