I’m gonna call it, we’re not going to get a full concord but the game will die in 3 months. Ironically the shitty and abrasive artstyle and obviously sloppy craftsmanship might be the only thing that saves this game.

Even if we assume the game is doing adequately, Bungie is betting everything on this game, it can't do adequately, it must be a smash hit that sells like hotcake and keeps printing money, and it just isn't.

Even the cope that we need to wait for the weekend to see the true numbers rings hollow when fucking Slay the Spire 2 is doing five times the number of concurrent players on Steam.

I thank modern Bungie for slapping the name Marathon on this abortion, since it guarantees the old games will remain unmolested.

Last Word and Thorn were it for me. Just everything from the lore surrounding them to the designs, to the animations and sounds. That said the D1 PVP meta of Thorn/Last Word was cancer but by god it was one of the best metas in the Destiny series imo.


To actually go off on a tangent as others have stated the story of the game used to be so much better before shit like turning Saint and Osiris gay. Shin Malphur going on to avenge his mentor/father figure Ward in a showdown between him and Dregden yor (the lore behind thorn and last word) was captivating. Is that concept new? No but the way in which it's done and the backdrop of the dark age collapse made it cool, made it relatable to the human condition.

Been replaying D1, it’s insane how much more grounded and dark that games story and atmosphere is. Writing is good, enemies are actually threatening, and like you said; the lore surrounding everything wasn’t written like faggot fan fiction. Osiris used to be a legendary warlock before we learned he took it in the ass from a robot. The hive are terrifying in D1, literally an existential threat of pure evil before we found out they’re just bug people who were retarded enough to be tricked by eldritch gods and that they are all just bickering siblings.

A game that I feel did the sort of post-Mirror's Edge aesthetic Marathon is going for better without using neoliberal milennial brutalist colors is Severed Steel, the main character also isn't butt fuck ugly either

Severed Steel is dripping with style and also is very blocky and voxel based yet doesn't make absolutely everything a brutalist block for some reason
