I could see how a casual might feel that way. 🤔
Could've been a half-decent campaign, maybe intertwined with the extraction aspect if they wanted. Even tarkov has a pve client, both official and non-official and a lot of extraction shooters get shipped along with other more traditional modes. What's strange is that Bungie spent all that time and money, changing directors and employees just to come up with one unbalanced game mode. During that time Call of duty got shipped 3-4 times with multiple game modes.

According to some people (who might be lying), Sony has greenlit another project within Bungie. Do I believe this? I’m not sure. Marathons failure has only been for 5 days so far with a lot of gunt guarding from a lot of different people, so it’s hard to find wether or not Sony actually considers this a success or not. If it is true, than Bungie might be safe as of now, the problem is, if the project is something like a Destiny 3 or maybe Destiny 1 remastered, it is years out from being available. Marathon is objectively a failure relative to money spent on it, and Destiny 2 was all but killed FOR marathons small chance at being a giant hit. Essentially, Bungie has zero cash flow currently to out pace both the budget for their new game, nor their legendary cash burn rate. That can lead to a company being executed real quick unless something changes very quickly.
EA killed Battlefield studios despite the good sales (apparently had bad mtx sales though). Bungie will get the axe

Prediction

Concord died in under two weeks
Highguard died in under two months
Marathon will die within two years
Fairgame$ will be canceled after two decades

But for real, does anyone have any idea what's going to happen to Bungie? They've pissed away all of their goodwill and they can't sell games sustainably based off their name alone anymore. I doubt Sony is going to straight up shutter them like they did Firewalk or whatever the Concord studio was called, but I can't see what else they'd be able to do. They can't be Sony's Bioware because Sony has a dozen studios that could pump out awardslop and doesn't need a token prestige studio to give the allure that they make legitimate games since they already do. The whole reason they were acquired was to assist other studios making live services, but half of those games died before they were even announced and the others are going to be commercial failures like Marathon.
Half Life 3 in 2 centuries confirmed, aw yeah!

Didn't...they just get done saying the exact same things in defense of Highguard? The game that shuts down in two days? Also, what makes the fucking current-year devs of Overwatch think anyone cares about their opinions? That's like asking the homeless guy screaming at a telephone pole what he thinks about the current government.

lol it’s funny because those same niggas they’re speaking “solidarity” with, are about to be “unemployed and maidenless.”

I love that they always co-opt our speech, we elden ring fans use “maidenless” to usually describe a gross nigga who ain’t get no bitches. Sounds like cultural appropriation to me, chuds.

Are they talking about Gummy Bears, the only incubation project Bungie was working on prior to acquisition that didn't get axed? That was spun off to another studio by Sony.
I just heard and read some general reports that literally, as of today, Sony greenlit another project, separate from the many other doomed ones from a few years back. Either a new IP (kek, good luck) or something related to Destiny.

You. Don’t. Hate. Journos. Enough.

He’s also acting like this kind of story telling HAD to be in an extraction shooter. This is how OG marathon told its fucking story. Through terminals and the environment. Acting like this is revolutionary when the game series this skinwalker takes its namesake from already did it seems a lot more casual to me, but, whatever man, if he wants to eat the fuckin’ slop, let’em.

I genuinely don’t understand the appeal of something like a single player Tarkov. At that point, what is it offering that other shooters don’t already do better?

If you want a tense, atmospheric PvE survival experience, why not play STALKER? If you just want a strong solo FPS experience, there are countless options built specifically around that format.

What actually makes Tarkov compelling is the multiplayer tension, the unpredictability of other players, the risk of losing your gear, the psychological pressure. Strip that away and you’re mostly left with inventory micromanagement and loadout tinkering. That’s not a unique hook.

And the same logic applies here with Marathon.

What exactly about Marathon’s multiplayer is so strong that people are begging for a single player version? In this thread alone, people criticize the enemy variety, the visuals, the weapons... almost every core component of the game. If the foundational elements aren’t compelling, how does removing player tension suddenly fix that?

Making something single player doesn’t automatically make it better. It just removes one variable. If the core design isn’t resonating, changing the format won’t magically solve that.

That whole fungus thing sounds a lot like the egregore from D2, a physical manifestation of Darkness specifically tied to memory. There have already been scattered Marathon references in Destiny, so I wonder if they're going in the opposite direction too.
Planet-wide fungus colony? Brother, they're just ripping off Sid Meyer's Alpha Centauri

Its not that magically making this iteration of Marathon single player would make it better, it’s that the obvious greed and retardation of Bungie and Sony led to this live service shit stain, instead of a sequel or soft reboot to a niche but beloved shooter series.

This, is what I meant by skinwalker. Marathon was a doom clone with an insanely well written and deep narrative back when that was extremely rare, especially in shooters. They could have done that again, a well made shooter with deep story and lore, maybe add a multiplayer mode for continued revenue and player retention. Instead, we got TEMU Tarkov that has a fraction of the content of its peers and competitors, and yet the journos and usual fags tell us to not make fun of them for their comparatively low player counts in relation to said competitors. I mean, seriously, we’re not crazy, AR was made by a fraction of the dev team, with a fraction of the dev and marketing costs, and launched to 500k fucking people on day 1. The numbers matter.
They can call it whatever names they want. There's not some unwritten rule against using player counts to measure how a game is doing.
Paul “I gobble Nimbus’ girl dick” Tassi, put out a vid today defending himself because he’s been flamed on Twitter for doing just that. They’re very insecure about these player counts if they’re willing to attack one of their own fanboys over posting facts.

This seems to confirm it's bombing on consoles

Paul once again shows he's a nigger. Anyone who knows Bungie understands why people are shitting on the game and using the steam charts to fuck with the player base who don't understand that you can just ignore them and continue playing the game.

I genuinely think that Bungie thought they could pull another Destiny and make a game that brings the casual audience into the genre. Only issue is that Embark came in and did that with Arc Raiders and they burnt all their good will years ago. Whatever good will they have is just on loan.

It doesn't have to be a fully-fledged pve experience, a 5-10 hours campaign will do to get players hooked on your game, the IP and the studio is known for it and they've done it before. I'm saying that they wasted all this time just to put all their eggs in one basket when their competitors do campaigns, multiple multiplayer game modes in one game in half Bungie's time. Don't get me wrong, I was looking forward in spite of it's shortcomings, but they did fuck all balancing the game properly to be enjoyable solo pvp and I was in the closed playtests they did after the alpha.
