Marathon 2025 - Bungie's new AAAA Extraction shooter

As for QC, it launched to so little fanfare that for years I assumed it had been cancelled.
lol no, SyncError and his dicksuckers apparently are still rotting away in their pisscord server, coping hardcore that the game is doing well actually, that "%whateverlowamountitisrightnow" players is amazing actually because YOU GET TO SEE FAMILIAR NAMES AND FACES 😃 and please buy more platinum (premium currency) cuz i gotta eat.
QC is a victim of hubris, delusion and greed. At this point I'm legitimately hoping for a shutdown so someone hopefully reverse-engineers the whole thing and makes it actually properly playable.

lol why not? Literally everybody else did except the Bungie fluffers.
As if the hate train was in any way correct about what the player count would be. Were now on our 3rd month of 'concord 3'.

I think the competitive AAA multiplayer shooter is a dying relic of a bygone past.
I think it depends on what you define as competitive.

It doesnt matter what the genre is, if a game is genuinely fun to play, then people will play it.

It seems like USA based AAA developers are a dying relic, they cant make games worth a fuck.

And don’t forget, wild meta shifts are absolute suffering for casuals. A casual wants to find a playstyle they like and have it be a good-enough ol' reliable they can return to no matter how long it's been since they played.
I agree but i don't think it matters. I think by an large the people still left playing have yet to figure out that this isnt the game they actually want to be playing. It's why every week a thousand or more people drop off. Eventually it just 'clicks' for them, they finally figure out that they dont actually want to play a pvp game with pve as a sound trap against no life degenerates.

It's actually worse than I thought it'd be. I thought it'd drop to the 50-40k range after a few months and then stabilize around that for a while. But we're 2 months in and it's flirting with sub-10k.

Sure, it wasn't an immediate plunge like Highguard or a total failure to launch like Concord. But I never really expected it to be that.

And that's not even mentioning how it apparently did just completely bomb on consoles.

You've been a staple of chart posting in this thread for the past 2 months, don't try and sell me that.

This is absolutely surprising. I thought that this should of been their Tarkov, but console players wanted fuck all to do with it.

...yeah, I've been posting charts and it's been going worse than I expected. Not sure what your point is. :\
Every post you have made has been negging the game, you making the claim of "I had higher hopes for it, lol" doesnt add up.

You most likely had hopes of this thing immediately crashing and burning, but now that it's not your the wise sage who knew better the whole time, but also you being wrong just some how proves that the game truly is shit.

It's like Ethan Ralph's Ring or Chris's Sonichu medalion. This sort of like post hoc reframing/decoy/narrative invulnerability.

We got spoiled with concord and highguard flopping like they did and many people expected the same. Marathon is a more regular type of failure. Mediocre sales followed by a long and drawn out death as it circles the drain.

Did I hope it would crash and burn immediately? Admittedly, yes, for a myriad of reasons, though I don't think I've ever posted that here.

Did I think it would? 100% honestly, no. At no point did I ever think it would be around 10k after 2 months. It was never going to literally be another Concord/Highguard because even though they've destroyed their reputation over the years, the Bungie name still has pull with normies, while Concord/Highguard were no-name games made by no-name studios that came out of nowhere.

Believe it or not I also don't even believe the game itself is shit, BTW. I just think it's the wrong game at the wrong time, and if Bungie handled things differently then 90% of the negativity it's gotten wouldn't have been there.

We've got a sub-4k hour before the maintenance. I wonder if they're gonna try something this week to bump player numbers? If they leave it any later, they're gonna have a really hard time justifying putting any sort of gameplay tidbit in before the big reset in June. There's still options, of course. They could do a sale to conclude when the next season comes in or something like that.

Like someone posted above, this is more in line with Suicide Squad. Made some money, got trashed relentlessly online (good), might stay up for the foreseeable future but absolutely a failure in terms of the amount of money invested and the future plans Sony had. Fuck’em!

I posted about this in another thread, but I think the difference between a concord-like and merely a flop is probably just that it's so bad, the attempts to defend it die almost immediately.

Thing is, in a game with as many moving parts as most live service games, nerfs are almost always a necessity at some point. Even if you take the lightest touch possible with buffs, their effects will add up over time, and that can cause issues with the actual game design as well. Again, with Destiny, a frequently cited example is the Reckoning bridge from Forsaken, where because players were practically unkillable with their toolkits at the time, Bungie had to violate some of their encounter design principles to actually give players a challenge: putting players on a narrow bridge that was easy to fall or get knocked off of, spawning tons of snipers on faraway ledges, spawning in boss-level enemies behind the group, and making the entire encounter timed such that messing up even once would effectively end the run. And if you weren't playing one of those overpowered classes at the time? You were pretty much dead weight no matter how good of a player you might be. (As a titan, I had to hope that I got matched up with a couple warlocks and a hunter. Multiple titans? Yeah, we weren't making it.)
The good old days of super-regen exotics that allowed near-constant uptime on Well, Tether, Nova Bomb, and maybe Blade Barrage, if you had a sufficiently dense stream of enemies to feed off of.
I thought that this should of been their Tarkov, but console players wanted fuck all to do with it.
The sort of player who enjoys extraction shooter sweat is highly unlikely to be willing to play it on anywhere other than PC, where they can have massive FoV, high-speed turning, and mouse precision when aiming.
it'll be 5-7 months for a new map
Wow, they've really gotten faster at putting out maps!

There's nothing they can do to fix it, Bungie dev time for content is glacial, it'll be 5-7 months for a new map, and maybe 2 guns, and I'm being generous
I was thinking there would be the Season 3 rennovation, but Bungie seems to have stopped promoting the game entirely. Not a good sign.

All they need to do is is find the right e-celeb to purchase a good review from, and Marathon will become a generation-defining cultural juggernaut.

This is the most cynical, generic, slop product imaginable.

Why gunt guard it?
