Also the official (New) Marathon Discord has just devolved into people spamming the "Worm" and "Pink Cat" emojis.
I don't think that many people have hope in this game.

They look like airsofters or paintballers and not in any way cool or interesting. I'm reminded of the meme before it shows season 1 of the game versus season 5 of the game and season 1 everything looks like call of duty 4 and then season 5 everybody looks like a gay clown, this style looks like they just jumped to season 7 and skipped seasons 1 through 6

I don't really know how to properly describe the old art style, but it seemed to be an interesting blend of kinda cartoonish aesthetics with (mostly) realistic hard sci-fi technology. Only game I can think of with a similar look is the original Half-Life.

Now, I would forgive a lot of this shit that the new game is saying is the new lore, like the game's players being called "runners", but the biggest sin this reboot has to throw at me is what they did to Demos.

The character design looked interesting, I think the reveal trailer was really cool as a short video concept, but I don't think I would want to look at that art style for hours on end. I have a feeling that they're trying to achieve that Wipeout type of stand out graphics design.

Definitely, I think with some tweaks to coloration and some parts of specific designs it could really fit the grittier vibes of the older Marathon titles, but I also kind of understand what they're trying to do with the brighter in your face stuff, since the whole mega corpo shit, but that's also the same kind of reddit tranny "epic corpo pwn" shit. "look at our smart commentary on WAR and corporate privatization!" like yeah nigga sure.

there's aspects that are soooo fuckin good about it, I'm not going to downplay that at all, Cross did an amazing job, but fuck will the troons at Bungie ruin it, just like they have Destiny and it's story, its aesthetics, its lore, etc. Maybe I'm just super bitter and I want so desperately to be wrong, but I imagine Marathon will end up like every other extraction-based shooter, abandoned, forgotten, and if it was a game-mode people like i.e Division's "Survival" mode, they will never ever acknowledge it again and fucking hate you for enjoying it. Leaving Tarkov as basically the only option.

I'd juxtapose the brightly colored, rounded armor and weapon designs with scratches, rust, discoloration, bullet holes and burn marks - make the equipment feel used.

As with all these trend-chasing "killer" titles, there's a finite pool of people playing looter shooters, and they're already heavily invested in existing titles where they've spent countless hours building up their hoard, are good at the game and all their friends play with them.

What exactly is Marathon going to offer these people to motivate them to give up all the hours and money they've sunk into the other games competing for marketshare?

The prestige of the IP? I don't think there's all that many people that know about Marathon, let alone have played it, so that's not going to work.

They can't lean into the narrative and presentation, since it's a multiplayer game and most people don't give a shit about the deep lore in a looter shooter.

Maybe the gameplay? But even then, it's just another looter shooter, probably one with one or two retarded gimmicks to "differentiate" it from the rest, except this one has a questionable art direction, which looks painfully generic and uninspired.

I really don't know what Sony is thinking greenlighting all these dogshit projects. I get that they have money to burn throwing shit at a wall and hoping something sticks, but the least they could do is at least bother to verify if the turds being thrown are sticky enough.
 
I had no idea this was coming out on Xbox. I thought it was a PS5 and PC exclusive. I'd try a beta, I didn't like destiny, but the shooting gameplay wasn't bad. I just hate looter games. I feel like Sony has no faith in this and they're just making them get it out the door. Especially releasing it on Xbox as well.

The war as sport idea could be interesting if done well(I liked the way it was done in the image comic VS), but it's not marathon. It being a hero/extraction shooter just seems like they picked the most popular ideas at the time of beginning development back in 2020 and decided that was the genre to go with.

There's M1A1, which was the M2 version of Marathon 1 for Aleph One before it could natively support the Marathon 1 files. It has some quality of life features, the big one being it basically deletes the infamous puzzle on Colony Ship For Sale, Cheap.

Personally, other than that terrible shit level, I think the level design of M1 is relatively solid. The Pfhor ship exploration segments are kind of annoying though. I finished a playthrough on TC for the first time ever last year and I was surprised at how fun it was.

Watching the gameplay reveal and... Well, the art style is... Lol, not as good looking as the promo stuff sadly.

Release date of Marathon is Sept 23rd 2025, by the way.
